The major topics of discussion were how to increase USMS participation and volunteerism with USMS as well as how to relate better to the Millennials and the next generation (the igen) that is now just turning 18 and eligible to join USMS. Did you know that 70% of USMS members are fitness swimmers while only 30% actively compete in meets or long distance events? I was surprised to learn that Wisconsin had the highest percentage of unique pool meet participation of members to membership total. 51.8 % of WMSC members participated in at least one pool meet in 2016. That means 305 members swam in at least one meet out of our 589 total membership. This seems great, right? Not so fast. If we are at 51.8% competitive swimmers, why are we failing to attract the fitness swimmers. If the average throughout USMS is 30% competitive swimmers, that means Wisconsin s total membership should be up near 1000 to match the national average. So, how do we attract more fitness swimmers and how do we increase overall membership without disenfranchising the core competitive swimmers? It takes all of us. If you are traveling and swimming at a pool with no USMS program but you notice a lot of lap swimmers, contact me and let me know. USMS and the LMSC has resources to help pools and local organizations start up USMS swimming programs. We need to grow outside of SE Wisconsin, Madison/Dells, Oshkosh, and Green Bay areas. There s still much of the state to get active in. Remember, by starting adult swim programs, lives can be saved both by preventing drownings and helping adults live healthier lifestyles. I ask all WMSC members to keep an eye out for areas that can use a swim program and shoot me an email. Thanks! Even though Wisconsin Masters State Championships are over, there are still several meets in April. The Baraboo Middle School Short Course Yards Meet will be held on 4/8/17, on- Line entries close Thursday, Apr 06, 2017. On 4/22/17, there is a new short course meters (scm) meet at McFarland High School. This will give Wisconsin swimmers two opportunities in 2017 to swim SCM (the other being the West Bend meet in December). Additionally, some members will be attending YMCA nationals in Sarasota, FL and/or USMS nationals in Riverside, CA in May. There will also be two opportunities to swim long course meters (LCM) in 2017. The Wisconsin LCM State Championships will be at WSAC on 6/17 while USMS LCM Nationals will be at the University of Minnesota the first week in August. Local meets are listed on the Wisconsin Masters Swimming webpage (www.swim-wimasters.org) under Events & Results. National events are listed on the USMS webpage (www.usms.org) under Events & Results and then either Pool or Open Water & epostals Thanks for reading. Until next time, stay wet! James Biles, LMSC Chair 1

Thank You, John Bauman by Mike Murray I want to thank John Bauman for all that he has done for Masters Swimming in Wisconsin. John was one of the founders of Wisconsin Masters Swimming in the 1970s. It was only as I talked to John to transition some of his roles that I truly understood how much he has done. Over the years John has been Chair, Registrar, Secretary, Treasurer, maintained record times, submited top 10 times, meet manager, hauled equipment to and from meets and helped build Wisconsin Masters Swimming into an organization of over 550 registered swimmers. John also works with US Masters Swimming to identify swimmers that have been registered with different IDs. Whew! It is important to note that John did all this while running his own business and competing at a high level with numerous National appearances, inspiring teammates along the way. John is a wealth of information about swimming in Wisconsin. From the city championships, pools in the area, where the coaches swam in college, thus developing the long standing rivalries that still exist in the high schools today. John told us that he thought that swimming was fun and he did all this work so that he could swim. There is no way that we can replace John. No one person can do everything that John has done. The best that we can do is to continue his work, to build onto what he has accomplished and make Wisconsin Masters Swimming even better. USMS SCM/LCM Top 10, All Americans and All Stars by Jeanne Seidler The 2016 SCM and LCM Top 10 for USMS is now final and published. The link to Top 10 Summary for Wisconsin is http://www.usms.org/comp/tt/toptenlmscsummary.php?lmscid=20 and this link shows relay links at the bottom of the page. For 2016 SCM, forty-seven (47) swimmers achieved individual Top 10 times and ten (10) relays achieved relay Top 10 times. For LCM, thirty-three (33) swimmers achieved individual Top 10 times, and seven (7) relays achieved Top 10 times. The 2016 All-Stars are published on the USMS website. Congratulations to James Biles as the only All-Star from Wisconsin in the Long Distance M55-59 category. There were no pool All-Stars from Wisconsin. All-Stars are determined from the total number of finishes in the USMS Top 10 with ties broken by the total number of 1st place finishes. There is one All-Star named for each age group in pool and open water events, regardless of course length. It is a rare honor to attain All-Star status and James has been named a long distance All-Star four times while Melinda Mann has been named a pool All-Star twice in years past. See http://www.usms.org/comp/as/ for a list of Wisconsin All-Stars. The 2016 All-Americans are published on the USMS website. All-Americans are those swimmers who place 1st in the Top 10 in an event or relay during 2016 in any course length. The All-American website is www.usms.org/comp/ aa/ on the USMS website. Wisconsin had 9 individuals on the list of All-Americans from pool meets and one individual on the list of All-Americans from long distance events. In addition, four pool relays attained All-American status. 2

Sun Prairie Meet February 19 by Steve Justinger 76 swimmers registered for the first Masters Swim Meet at the Sun Prairie High School Pool. The swimmers enjoyed the new venue, with spacious seating, cool clear water, wide lanes and excellent air quality. Several relays were contested, and numerous swimmers indicated a return to competition after long absences. Four new state records were achieved at the meet, too. Thanks to pool staff and all of the swimmers who made this meet such a success. Whitefish Bay Meet March 5 by Mary Schneider On Sunday, March 5, 95 swimmers participated in the swim meet at Whitefish Bay High School. Competitors came from Wisconsin and Illinois. One of the highlights of the meet are the 6 new state records set by Melinda Mann in the women s 60-64 age group. There was also good competition between the 10 Wisconsin clubs at the meet. This was a good meet to gauge where swimmers are at in preparing for the state meet, and those going to USMS or Y National meets. At this meet, the 1650 freestyle was contested, along with 13 relays. Throughout the meet, just outside of the pool, were 2 full tables of yummy home made treats. This is always a highlight of the meet. Thanks to all those bakers! Open Water / Long Distance Corner by James Biles This has been a strange winter. Seems the beginning of Spring has been just as cold as the winter. But warmer weather is right around the corner with warm water directly behind it. Now is the time to plan your summer swim schedule. Big Shoulders sold out 4.5 hours, so if you didn t register, cross that one off your list. The Madison Open Water Swim will be held on Saturday, August 19 th. Expect registration to open in early May. Sign up quickly as this race also promises to be a fast sell out. There were a lot of disappointed people because of the cancellation last year. If you were an entrant last year, you will have the opportunity to sign up a week before the event opens to the general public, and you will receive $10 off. Keep up your training and distance in the pool to prepare for summer s events and as soon as lake temps reach a temperature you re comfy with, get outside and swim! Meanwhile, in the first USMS Long Distance Championship of the year, the One Hour epostal, Wisconsin swimmers performed well, but the official final results are not out yet. I was very disappointed with Wisconsin turnout this year. Only three swimmers participated. Please think about the other long distance pool events latter this year, the 5k/10k epostals in May-Sep and 3000 and 6000 yd epostals in Sep-Nov. epostal National Championships: 5k and 10k: 5/15 9/15 (50m pool only) 3000-6000 Yds: 9/15 11/15 (25y or 25m pool) 2017 National Championships Date Event Location 4/22 Marathon Distance Championship (7 miles) sold out Sarasota, FL 6/03 Ultra Marathon Distance Championship (10 miles) Chattanooga, TN 6/04 Middle Distance Championship (2.4 miles) Chattanooga, TN 6/24 2 Mile Cable Championship Foster Lake, OR 7/30 Long Distance Championship (5k) Elk Lake, OR 9/23 Sprint Distance Championship (1 mile) Angle Lake 3

Elmbrook Swims 100 X 100 on Saturday, February 25 Action in the pool swimming one of the 100s The 13th Annual 100 X 100 was held by Elmbrook Masters group on Feb 25. There were 10 sets of 10 X 100, which were swum by 5 lanes, and 1 lane swam 100X 75s. There were 2 breaks built into the workout, so that everyone could grab some snacks for additional sustenance. Most of the group did each 100 on 1:45, although there was 1 speedy lane, doing their 100s on 1:30. A few other swimmers came for part of the event, while a core group of 17 swimmers finished the 10,000 yds (or 7,500 yds). Afterwards, members gathered at the home of Julie Van Cleave for a chili lunch, and other potluck food and drink. Energies were renewed, and everyone was looking forward to next year s event. Why do they continue to complete this event? Because they can! Look at that form, still going strong Karen Hoffman, Cindy Whitaker, and Mary Schneider finished 100 X 75s. It s good to be done. SCY State Swimming Family by Claire Weslaski A family that swims together, stays together! The Weslaski family, based in Racine, Wisconsin, lives that slogan to the fullest. Kevin (53), Claire (50), Paige (25), and James (21) share a deep passion for the sport of swimming, culminating into a successful Masters State meet on Saturday, March 25th. Competing in relays as a family as well as dominating individual events, the family went home with some serious hardware. "We can't wait to do another Masters meet, we had a ball!" explained James, who just finished up his senior year swimming at Carthage College. Keep your eye out for this fit family in the future, because "there's no slowing down now," explained Kevin. L to R: James, Paige, Claire, Kevin McFarland SCM Meet April 22 One last chance to swim Short Course Meters. If you missed West Bend, try McFarland. If you want to better your West Bend times, try McFarland. A different challenge prior to USMS Nationals. To enter the meet, go to http://www.swim-wimasters.org/. 4

What Happens if You Register as "Unattached" Perhaps you registered as Unattached because you don't have a particular workout group that you belong to, or train alone without a team. Did you know that if you are registered as Unattached, you cannot participate on relays or join the Wisconsin team effort at Nationals? We recommend that you switch your registration from Unattached to Wisconsin Masters Aquatic Club (WMAC) or one of the other WI clubs in the state. WMAC is the largest club and the one you associate yourself with if you plan to compete for WI at state or National level meets. To change your USMS registration from unattached to Club WMAC, simply send an e-mail to Trina Schaetz ( wiregistrar@usms.org ) and request the club change. If you registered as Unattached because you are planning to switch to another club in another State/LMSC then your USMS registration should remain unattached. Current Wisconsin 'CLUB" options: I. Wisconsin Masters Aquatic Club (WMAC) Workout groups for WMAC include: BARA (Circus City Masters) MCFM (McFarland Masters) SHOR (Shorewood Swim Club) EBM (Elmbrook Masters) MRAM (Milwaukee Rec Aquatics Masters) WAVE (Training Solutions Wavemasters) GYMD (Geneva Y Masters) OCMS Oregon Community Masters Swimming) TF (Tri Faster) HMST (Harbor Masters Swim Team) OSHY (Oshkosh Y) WSAC (Walter Schroeder Aquatic Masters) MAM (Madison Area Masters) OZ (Ozaukee Aquatics) WFBM (Whitefish Bay Masters) II. Wisconsin Water Warriors Event by Melodee Nugent Getting the awards ready for the Wisconsin Water Warriors event is always fun and challenging. Wisconsin Master Swimming provides a nice budget for me to work with. But I was also very fortunate to get some more goodies for everyone from the connections I had made over the years. This includes: Maureen Dewitt at Kiefer provided everyone with a pair of Kiefer Express goggles (www.kiefer.com) Andrew Smidt provided everyone with Triswim samples of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, Foggies and Skin Slick (www.sbrsportsinc.com) Ryan Good at Infinit Nutrition provided everyone a $25 gift card that can be used for customized or pre-packaged drink mixes (www.infinitnutrition.us) Please help support these sponsors and visit their websites to see what they have to offer. The first place swimmers for each age group received another award crafted by my dad. They turned out awesome. The first place swimmers also received a signed book by Lisa Cohen called The Joy of Swimming I highly recommend this book. It has a colorful way of explaining the history of swimming (including pools, swimsuits, caps, goggles and much more) and stories of well-known swimmers. Non-first place swimmers received a Keep Calm and Swim On reusable grocery bag. Now, to start thinking about next year! Melodee s Dad, and crafter of the wooden plaque for the first place winners 6

For some, this is the last meet of the SCY season. For others, it is the first step in getting ready for their Championship meets, be it the USMS Nationals, or the YMCA Nationals. This year, a total of 174 swimmers registered for the meet, with 128 from Wisconsin, 41 from Illinois, and 1 each from Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri. There was plenty of action at this meet, as evidenced by the new state records achieved in 29 individual events and 5 relays. Melinda Mann led the pack with 6 individual state records, plus contributed to the Women s 55+ 800 Free Relay. This relay smashed the previous record by over 2 minutes! Multiple swimmers broke 3 state records, Marissa Yontz in the women s 18-24 age group, Lisa Hayes in the women s 45-49 age group, and Greg Hollub in the men s 70-74 age group.
