SWIM LESSONS SPCC AQUATICS offers infant, pre school, age group and adult swim programs. Instructors are experienced or trained by the American Red Cross and have obtained Water Safety Instructor certification. Refunds are only given if a class is cancelled. SPCC Aquatics will be closed Friday, May 22 nd at 2pm until Tuesday, May 26 th at 6:30am. SPCC Aquatics will be closed on Saturday, July 4 th, but will be open for free open swim from 1 to 4pm following the Severna Park 4 th of July Parade. SPCC Aquatics will also be closed during the Anne Arundel County Swimming Championships on July 7 th, 8 th, and 12 th please check the pool schedule for specific times. SPCC Aquatics will close for seasonal maintenance beginning on Friday, August 22 nd until Monday, September 8 th. Please Note: Refunds are only given if a class is canceled. Any credits issued for an aquatics program will be valid for six months from the issue date. Last letter in course number: T denotes Therapy Pool and M denotes Main Pool LEVEL 0 PARENT AND CHILD AQUATICS is geared toward children 6 months to 3 years of age. Parent participation is required. This course is designed to help young children become comfortable in the water as well as to teach parents how to keeps their child safe in, on, and around the water. Basic swimming techniques will also be introduced. All children must wear tight fitting rubber pants or a swim diaper to be allowed in the pool. LEVEL 1 INTRODUCTION TO WATER SKILLS / PRESCHOOL AQUATICS 1 (Preschool aquatics is for our youngest swimmers, usually ages 3 & 4) is an introduction to bobbing, floating, kicking, arm movement and water safety. Children must be at least 3 years of age. (Presc hool aquatics is for our youngest swimmers, usually ages 3 & 4) helps children learn to float and glide independently. Front crawl, back crawl, and butterfly are introduced, and deep water is explored. LEVEL 3 STROKE DEVELOPMENT / PRESCHOOL AQUATICS 3 (Preschool aquatics is for our youngest swimmers, usually ages 3 & 4) focuses on rotary breathing, front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, and water safety. Treading water and diving are introduced. continues to strengthen front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, diving, treading water, and water safety. Sidestroke and elementary backstroke are introduced. LEVEL 5 STROKE REFINEMENT is designed to specifically tune stroke techniques and increase and maintain endurance. Breaststroke, surface dives, and flip turns are introduced. ADULT SWIM LESSONS are for beginner and intermediate swimmers. Open/Lap Swimming Pool time is available for open and lap swimming. The cost is $6 per swim or $70 for a 15 visit pass. The cost for seniors (over age 62) is $4.50 per swim or $50 for a 15 visit pass. Youth (12 & under) must be accompanied and directly supervised by someone at least 16 years of age. Youth may swim for $4 per swim or $45 for a 15 visit youth pass. Lost passes will not be replaced. Open swim is available as scheduled, but is subject to change at any time. Groups of 10 or more (intending to participate in open swim time) are required to rent a portion of the pool in advance. If, at any time, the lifeguard on duty determines that the pool, or portion of the pool, has become too crowded for the safety of the patrons, he or she may refuse admittance to the pool. Water Walking Discover the fitness and therapeutic benefits gained by Water Walking. Thirty minutes of Water Walking is equal to two hours of walking on dry land. Multiple Sclerosis Aquatic Exercise Class The natural properties of water, including buoyancy or weightlessness, combined with 3 dimensional resistance of the water environment, may let people with MS move in ways that their disability might not otherwise allow. Participants learn to work the water to best meet their intensity and fitness needs. This can better prepare the body for demands required for daily living activities. Cost is $12 per visit. LIFEGUARD AND CPR/AED CERTIFICATION CLASSES The Lifeguard and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer courses are sponsored by the American Red Cross and meet all Anne Arundel County requirements. Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is good for two years and is transferable between counties and states. Lifeguards must be 16 to obtain an Anne Arundel County Lifeguard license. All participants must: ~Be at least 15 years of age by the last day of the course attended. Proof of age must be presented at registration. ~Attend all training sessions. ~Perform all required skills with 100% accuracy. ~Pass a written test with a score of at least 80%. ~Successfully complete a pre course screening session which includes the following: 1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. 2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits. 3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds ~ Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. ~Surface dive, feet first ~Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. IMST Intramural Swim Team This is an eight week program for children who may not want to compete or do not have the time to commit to a year round swim team. The purpose of IMST is to build stroke efficiency and endurance. Your child must be able to swim at least 6 LENGTHS OF THE POOL WITHOUT STOPPING and have a knowledge of ALL 4 STROKES. During each session, the swimmers will be grouped by age as well as by ability. Video taping will be incorporated into the training sessions. The first four weeks of each session will focus on the four competitive strokes, and will include swimming from 30 40 lengths of the pool. The second four weeks will include technique work, increased yardage, and endurance training. The session may conclude with an intrasquad meet during one of the last scheduled practices.
