WELCOME TO OUR CLUB The Witley and District Motor Cycle Club, based in Guildford, has been at the forefront of off-road motorcycle sport in the south-east since 1924. Our members come from all walks of life and have a wide range of motorcycling interests but all share a love of a fascinating and exhilarating sport. We hope that you will enjoy your visit to our display. Please have a look at the variety of machines on show, talk to some of our members today to find out more about our exciting sport, or watch the skill of our riders as they tackle the artificial obstacles of our mini arena trial.
HISTORY Only a handful of motorcycle clubs still functioning can claim to be as old, or older, than the Witley MCC. In 1921 several lads from the village of Witley and the surrounding area used to gather, with their motorcycles, in a local builder s yard. Riders from further afield soon joined the meetings, and in 1924 the Witley and District MCC was formally born and affiliated to the Auto-Cycle Union so that riders could enter into sporting competition. The Club, through the energy, vision and commitment of its members over the years, together with outstanding leadership, has been successful in trials, motocross, enduro, grass track and road racing not to mention those members who just enjoy exploring Britain s public roads on two wheels. Witley is especially proud of its long history of quality riders competing in trials, enduros and motocross on the international stage.
TRIALS Observed trials is the most affordable and one of the most enjoyable forms of motorcycle sport, and has been a Witley speciality for most the Club s existence. A test of machine handling and control rather than of speed, the discipline of trials is a great training ground for other fields of motorcycle sport and appeals to riders of all ages and abilities. Competitions or practice sessions can be organised using available local land and, particularly with modern machines, there is minimal disturbance to other members of the public. Witley also runs long-distance sporting trials using metalled roads and byways in Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire.
ENDURO Our premier event of the year, the Boxing Day Enduro, is only one of a number of events run by the Club during the year for this exciting branch of the sport not unlike a stage rally on two wheels. Witley riders compete in the South Eastern Enduro Combine and are also in national competitions around the country. Although riders compete against the clock rather than directly against each other, with the latest in motocross-style machines there is still plenty of excitement and spectacle. Since 1997 Witley MCC has regularly entered teams in the International Six Days Enduro, in countries as diverse as Italy, Portugal, France, Poland, Brazil and New Zealand.
OTHER SPORTS AND SOCIAL Among the other disciplines of motorcycle sport in which Witley riders compete is grass track racing, using machines similar to speedway bikes on an oval grass circuit. It s a fast and furious game with lots of thrills and, needless to say, occasional spills. There are also classes for sidecar outfits of several designs. It is some time since Witley has organised motocross events (despite setbacks we are ever hopeful of finding the necessary land within a reasonable distance) but we still have members taking part in motocross competition. Our members also enjoy riding on the road, taking part in road navigation competitions, green laning and, of course, the essential spannerwork. The Club has a lively social calendar too, as members of all ages enjoy each other s company.
LOOKING FORWARD Witley MCC is a forward-looking Club and our aim is to encourage and promote all aspects of motorcycle sport and leisure in the 21st century, building on our long heritage of well over 80 years of excellence in event organisation and competition, and to do our best to ensure the prosperity of the sport in the years to come. Motorcycle sport can be complex and we are keen to see new riders, and especially young people, get the best of help and instruction, also working alongside other specialist clubs. We hold regular training days for enduro riders and support our youth and novice riders in trials. There is plenty of experience within the Witley Club, so feel free to come with any questions you have. The Witley Club welcomes new members and you are warmly invited to join us for social or competitive activities. Whether you are interested in trials, enduros, grass track racing or riding on the road or just talking about any of them! please come along to our clubroom on any Thursday evening from 8.30pm, or visit our website.
