APPENDIX #1 Major Midget Zones

Transcription:

The time has come to transition to closed containment in British Columbia.

Diseased Atlantic farmed salmon in open net pens in the Pacific Ocean are threatening the health of wild salmon. The industry knows it, the courts recognize it, and yet the government ignores it.

More than 5,000 Canadians have written the Prime Minister demanding his government take action.

The government's response: silence

August Hundreds of thousands of farmed Atlantic salmon escape into B.C. waters.

October 2017 Coastal First Nations start their over 200 day occupation of two Marine Harvest farms.

October 2017 CTV News Program W5 exposed the disastrous impact open-net Atlantic salmon farms are having on wild Pacific salmon.

November 2017 The world witnessed a graphic video of fish farms spewing virus-laden blood directly into the wild salmon migration route and smothering ancient glass sponges.

February 2018 Wild Fish Conservancy lab results show 100% of escaped salmon tested were infected with the highly contagious virus PRV. The burden of proof that PRV does not cause harm to wild salmon does not rest on the fish, it rests with government.

March 2018 State of Washington bans open net farms.

April 2018 Environment Commissioner issues a scathing report.

June 2018 Provincial government makes an announcement on future tenures.

The Proposition: The Liberal government must remove these farms from the wild salmon migration route and transition this harmful industry to safe, land-based technology.

Canada is well positioned to become a world leader in closed containment, but we need to act now.

Globally, money is being invested in landbased salmon farming. Florida, for instance, is building a 90,000-ton facility.

It is time for Canada to invest in a safe, sustainable industry that protects wild salmon and employment, develops new technologies, jobs, and export opportunities.

Land Aqua s 50,000 MT RAS land-based salmon aqua park proposal is a gamechanger for B.C.
