The same five players opened the game at Oregon State and against Utah Valley. Of the players to earn a starting spot, no one has started all eight games. Freshman guard Funda Nakkasoglu and senior guard Elise Nelson lead the team with seven starts each this season. HOME COURT ADVANTAGE Utah State has played just two games at home this season, where it has earned the two sole wins of the year. The Aggies topped Utah Valley, 79-61, on Nov. 20, while edging Westminster, 60-51, on Dec. 6. In program history, the Aggies are at an even 144-144 when playing on the familiar court of the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. PUTTING IN THE TIME Three Utah State players have topped or are nearing the 200-minute mark this season. In seven starts and time in all eight games, senior guard Elise Nelson leads the team at 225 minutes, averaging 28.1 per game. In the Dec. 6 game against Westminster, Nelson played the entire 40 minutes. Freshman guard Funda Nakkasoglu will hit the 200-minute plateau in Sunday s game, where she has played 197 minutes so far, averaging 28.1 per game. She was on the court the full 40 minutes against Utah (Dec. 3). Senior forward Franny Vaaulu is averaging 22.0 minutes per game, playing 176 minutes so far on the season. DEFENSIVE DARLINGS Through the last stretch of games, Utah State has done a solid job defending the net from both the two and three-point lines. The Aggies have held the last three opponents to a field goal percentage of 37.6 (87-of-231). From behind the arc, the opposing team has shot an average of 39.7 percent (52-of-131) over the last seven games, highlighted by a low of 24.0 percent (6-of-25) by Marist. STEALING AWAY The Utah State defense has had a strong couple of weeks, capitalizing on the opponents turnovers to average 10.3 steals per game. With that average, the Aggies rank third in the Mountain West and 69th nationally. Senior forward Franny Vaaulu leads the team and is seventh in the conference with 1.6 steals per game. Freshman guard Tilar Clark and senior forward Ingrida Strikas are next with 11 steals each on the season, while the team as a whole has tallied 82. Sacramento State, who the Aggies play next week, leads the nation in steals, averaging 16.4 per game, while San José State leads the Mountain West at 13.0 per game. FREE THROW FINESSE Utah State is shooting 67.2 percent (78-of-116) from the free throw line, ranking fourth in the Mountain West. In the game at Oregon State, the Aggies shot 100 percent (10-for-10) from the line. Three Utah State players are perfect from the line, including senior forward Franny Vauulu (4-of-4), junior guard/forward Tijana Djukic (2-of-2) and junior guard Mariah Miles (2-of-2). Senior guard Elise Nelson leads the team with an individual performance of 78.6 percent (11-of-14) on the year, while freshman guard Funda Nakkasoglu and freshman center Hannah Hutchins have taken the most attempts with 24 each. Nakkasoglu is shooting 66.7 percent (16-of-24), while Hutchins sits at 45.8 percent (11-of-24). LOOKING BACK In the first year in the Mountain West last season, the Aggies finished the season 15-16, with an 8-10 league record. The team finished eighth in the league, advancing to the second round of the Mountain West Tournament. The Aggies look to replace All-American Jennifer Schlott, who spent the 2013-14 season shattering several Utah State and Mountain West records. Schlott broke both the MW and USU single-season record for points scored with 811. She also set the MW record for single-season scoring, averaging 26.2 points per game in overall games and 27.2 points per game in league contests. She ended her four years at USU with the career points record with 1,566. Schlott also finished her career breaking the Utah State record for career assists with 436, while her 192 assists during the 2013-14 season broke the USU single-season record. She was named the Mountain West Player of the Year, while current senior Elise Nelson was named to the all-defensive team. EXPERIENCED AGGIES Utah State returns seven letterwinners from last year s squad. Among those seven are two experienced starters in senior guard Elise Nelson, who was named to the Mountain West all-defensive team last season, senior forward Franny Vaaulu. Utah State Game Notes 2 December 12, 2014

Other returners include senior guard/forward Jasmine Porter, senior forward Ingrida Strikas, junior forward Tijana Djukic, junior guard Mariah Miles and sophomore guard Lynette Johnson. The loss drops USU to 0-5 on the season, while UNC improves to 7-2. This was a frustrating loss because we see the same problems game-in and game-out, said head coach Raegan Pebley. It s the immaturity of our team right now that s causing us not to come out and fix things. I don t know if these girls think that we are such amazing athletes that we can come out and get wins just off of our athletic ability. I don t know what it is, but we need to figure it out. Led by Aird s seven first-half points and USU s obvious size advantage the Aggies were able to dominate the paint in the opening stanza. The Aggies led 22-17 with 5:52 remaining, and it looked as if they would go into the locker room with their first halftime lead of the season. The Bears then countered USU s size with speed and perimeter shooting as they would use a 10-3 run to close the half, up 27-25. UNC was led by Heather Barbour s six first-half points on 2-3 from three-point range. They had way more big guys than we did, said UNC head coach Ron Vlasin. We figured if we could hit a few threes then maybe we would be able to knock someone off. UNC opened the second half where they left off in the first, launching three-pointers at every opportunity. The strategy paid-off as the Bears would hit three from long range to help build their lead to seven midway through the half. Virginia Jennings and Christina Zdenek would then hit back-to-back three-pointers that sparked a 25-10 run for the Aggies and put them up by eight with 2:56 remaining in the game. UNC would then go on another run as it outscored the Aggies 14-6 to tie the game at 66 at the end of regulation. UNC s Barbour hit a three-point shot to open overtime and the Bears never looked back as they won 73-70. Aird was the only Aggie to score in overtime as she knocked down two free-throws and a jumper. Northern Colorado had two players score in double-digits with senior guard Amber Elliot notching 24 points and four assists. Heather Barbour added 15 points and six rebounds. USU tallied its highest field-goal percentage so far this year against the Bears as it shot 40.4 percent for the game. USU also out rebounded its opponent for the fourth-straight game as it recorded 42 rebounds to the Bears 36. UNC meanwhile shot 37.5 percent and went 12-39 from beyond the arc for the game. The Bears actually made more three-point baskets (12) than USU attempted (9). Utah State Game Notes 4 December 12, 2014

AGAINST THE COMPETITION Last Greeley Meeting Dec. 2, 2004 Northern Colorado 68, Utah State 62 Junior post Ali Aird scored a season-high 14 points and freshman guard Taylor Richards dished-out a career-high seven assists, but Northern Colorado used sharp-shooting from beyond the arc to record a, 68-62, come-from-behind victory in women s basketball action here Thursday night. The loss was Utah State s first on the road this season as it fell to 2-2 on the year. Meanwhile, Northern Colorado took advantage of playing at home for the first time this year as it improved to 1-4 overall. Northern Colorado just seems to have our number, said Utah State head coach Raegan Pebley. We were unable to put them away again and it came back to haunt us. We missed a lot of point-blank shots [Thursday] that killed us. We are going to have to bounce back and focus on getting a win at Air Force on Saturday. Aird scored in double-figures for the third time this year as she shot five-of-10 from the field in just 21 minutes of play. She led four Aggies in double-figures as Jessica Freeman tallied a career-high 13 points and pulled-down a team-high seven rebounds, Brittany Tressler contributed 12 points and a career-high four steals, while Richards stayed consistent with 10 points and two steals. It was the third-straight game the Aggies have had at least four players score in double-digits. The score stayed close in the first half as neither team was able to pull away from the other. Northern Colorado, which held a one to three point lead much of the half, gradually built a six-point lead (23-17), its largest of the opening period, with 6:13 to go in the half on a Heather Barbour lay-up. Brittany Tressler would then score seven of USU s next nine points to help the Aggies take a one-point lead, 26-25,with just over two minutes remaining on the clock. The lead would be short-lived for the Aggies as Jena Fosdick hit a three-pointer 14 second later to give the Bears the momentum as they would eventually take a 31-30 edge into intermission. The game remained close throughout much of the second period, but this time the Aggies held a small lead for the majority of the time. USU looked like it was in good shape with a five-point lead with 5:46 remaining in the game, but UNC s Jena Fosdick had other plans, as she managed to score 11 of the Bears final 18 points, including two key shots from beyond the arc to help the Bears capture their first win of the season. Meanwhile, the Aggies notched just six points in the same time frame as they dropped their first road game of the year. UNC s Fosdick led all scorers with 19 points as she hit 4-of-5 from three-point land. Dani Veal and Barbour both grabbed a gamehigh eight rebounds as the Bears carried the 40-to-35 advantage on the glass. As a team, Utah State shot 33.8 percent from the field, had a season-high 15 steals and forced a season-high 25 turnovers. Northern Colorado on the other hand, shot 49 percent from the floor, including a 10-for-23 mark from the three-point line. Utah State Game Notes 5 December 12, 2014

HEAD COACH JERRY FINKBEINER Jerry Finkbeiner enters his third season as Utah State women s basketball head coach after being named the ninth head coach in 23 years of Aggie women s basketball on April 26, 2012. Finkbeiner (pronounced Fink-by-ner) is the second male coach in Utah State history along with Bob Corbin who was the Aggies coach from 1984-86. Finkbeiner is only the second USU coach since the reinstatement of the program in 2003 when Raegan Pebley took over. Pebley left USU to take the head coaching position at Fresno State following the 2011-12 season. Finkbeiner took over a Utah State program that had its first 20-win season in 2011-12, finishing with a 21-10 record as it advanced to Women s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) for the second-straight season. Finkbeiner came to Utah State from Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla., where he spent 16 years as head coach. During his tenure at ORU, the Golden Eagles averaged 17 wins per season and advanced to postseason play eight times in the past 13 years with five trips to the NCAA Tournament and three appearances in the WNIT. Prior to Finkbeiner s arrival, ORU had never played in an NCAA Tournament game. Overall, Finkbeiner has a 507-272 (.650) record in 25 years as a collegiate head coach at Oral Roberts (1996-2013), Southern Nazarene (1991-96) and USU. He also ranks 30th in the nation among active coaches with his 507 career wins. In the 2013-14 season, Finkbeiner led the Aggies to a 15-16 record. The team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Championships, falling to Colorado State. That year, Finkbeiner coached guard Jennifer Schlott to several accolades and records. Schlott finished the year third in the nation in scoring with 26.2 points per game. She was named the Mountain West Player of the Year and became USU s first-ever AP All-American. She became the all-time leading scorer at Utah State, ending her career with 1,556 points. Schlott was invited to a WNBA training camp with the Indiana Fever, before signing a professional contract to play for Tapiolan Honka in Finland. Off the court, the 2013-14 Aggies also succeeded academically. Six student-athletes received academic all-mountain West honors, while two were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes. During the 2012-13 season, which was his first season at Utah State, the Aggies achieved an 18-14 record. USU finished second in the WAC standings for the second-straight season with a 14-4 mark. Under the direction of Finkbeiner, Utah State advanced to postseason for the third-straight season, as the Aggies played in the Women s Basketball Invitational. USU finished the season second in the nation in free throw percentage with a school and WAC record 80.1 percent from the charity stripe. Three players were honored by the WAC as Devyn Christensen earned first-team all-wac honors, while Jennifer Schlott and Jenna Johnson earned second and third-team all-wac honors, respectively. Christensen also ended the season third in the nation in free throw shooting at 92.4 percent. The Aggies also found success in the classroom under Finkbeiner as five players earned academic all-wac honors. As the head coach at Oral Roberts, Finkbeiner led the Golden Eagles to seven Summit League (formerly Mid-Continent Conference) regular season and tournament titles and six 20-win seasons, including three consecutive 20-win campaigns, a first for the program in over three decades. At ORU, Finkbeiner coached five All-Americans, eight conference players of the year, five conference newcomers of the year and 26 all-conference selections. Furthermore, Finkbeiner was named conference coach of the year twice during his ORU tenure. In the 2011-12 season, Oral Roberts hit the 20-win plateau for the third-straight year, achieving several landmark victories along the way. The Golden Eagles defeated Wisconsin in early November for their first win over a Big Ten program since 1977, and their win over the WAC s Louisiana Tech was their first against the three-time national champions. ORU also advanced to the WNIT in 2011-12, their third consecutive postseason appearance. In his six years prior to ORU, Finkbeiner led Southern Nazarene to three-straight NAIA national titles and a combined 99-4 record from 1994 to 1996. Finkbeiner posted a 186-20 record in six seasons at SNU. During his career at Southern Nazarene, Finkbeiner coached nine NAIA All-Americans and a two-time NAIA Player of the Year, while five of his players went on to play professional basketball overseas. During his tenure at Southern Nazarene, Finkbeiner s coaching achievements did not go unnoticed as he was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1994, 1995 and 1996. In 1995, he was also named as the College Sports Magazine and Converse National Coach of the Year. Finkbeiner was named the NAIA District 9 Coach of the Year in 1993 and the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year from 1992 to 1996. Finkbeiner, a native of Southern California, attended Southern Nazarene in Oklahoma City, Okla. from 1975-80, where he was a four-year letterwinner. In that time, he was selected as a Christian Collegiate All-American in 1978. Finkbeiner graduated with a bachelor s of science degree in physical education and completed his master s degree in physical education at Northwest Missouri State University. Along with coaching at SNU, Finkbeiner also worked as a professor in the kinesiology and sports management department.
