INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #130 / Home Game #65 Columbus Clippers (52-76) at Indianapolis Indians (63-66) Tuesday, August 25, 2009 -- First Pitch @ 7:00 p.m. EDT Victory Field -- Indianapolis, Ind. Clippers LHP Mike Gosling (7-3, 4.63) vs. Indians RHP Daniel McCutchen (13-6, 3.36) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Daniel McCutchen, is scheduled to face Columbus for the third time this season and for the fifth time in his career on Tuesday night... McCutchen used his first two outings of the season against Columbus to earn himself International League Pitcher of Week Honors as he faced and defeated the Clippers twice in the week of August 10-16... In that week McCutchen turned in his longest outing of the season against Columbus on August 10, blanking them for 7.2 innings on seven hits and no walks while striking out seven... The 26-year-old then continued his domination of the Clippers with six more shutout frames to go along with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work on August 15... Following his Pitcher of the Week Honors, the Tribe right hander picked up a victory over the West Division Louisville Bats on August 20 after allowing just two runs and striking out a season high eight... That victory moved McCutchen into a first place tie with Louisville s Justin Lehr for the IL lead in victories with 13... McCutchen has also now gone at least 6.0 innings in each of his last eight starts (6-1), has a 1.67 ERA so far in the month of August and is 5-1 with a 1.37 ERA in seven starts since the All-Star break... With a win tonight, McCutchen will also become the first Indianapolis Indians hurler to win 14 games since Horacio Estrada led the IL with 14 wins during the 2000 season. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose McCutchen for the third time already this season is Columbus starting pitcher Mike Gosling, who faced the Indians on both August 10 and 15 this season... Gosling began the season with Rochester, where he posted a 7-1 record and one save in 21 appearances out of the bullpen before making the move over to the Cleveland Indians organization, where he posted a 6.75 ERA (9 ER in 12.0 IP) in seven relief appearances with Cleveland and a 1.13 ERA (1 ER in 8 IP) in three relief outings with the Clippers... Gosling has suffered his only two losses in a Columbus uniform against the Tribe, both times matching up against the red hot McCutchen... In his first start against the Tribe on August 10, Gosling allowed just one run on three hits over four innings of work, before being shelled for five runs on 10 hits in five innings of work on August 15... In his most recent outing, Gosling took a no decision against Toledo on August 20 after allowing five runs on 10 hits along with a season-high seven strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched. extra MARKS THE SPOT: With their two doubles and two-run long ball by LF Tagg Bozied in last night s contest, the Indians have now collected at least one extra-base hit in each of their last 45 games dating back to July 8... This streak of 45 games comes after the Indians posted an even more impressive extra-base hit streak of 50 games in-a-row to begin this season, a streak which also extended to 84 games in-a-row dating back to July 29, 2008... Total this season Indianapolis has had only three games in which they have not collected an extra-base hit (June 3, July 5 and July 8). WALKING OVER THE COMPETITION: Indians 3B Neil Walker went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs in last night s contest to increase his August RBI total to a team and International League best 24 in the month of August... Walker also had a double in yesterday s contest to increase his season total of two-baggers to 30, an IL best 13 of which have come in the month of August as well... Overall in the month of August, Walker leads the Tribe with 28 hits, 13 doubles, 24 RBI and a.573 slugging percentage, while his 13 doubles and 24 RBI are the most by any Indians player in any single month this season... The switch hitting slugger s 24 RBI so far this month are also the most for a Tribe player since Michael Ryan had 25 in July of 2007, while his 13 doubles are the most by any Indianapolis player in a single month since at least 2005 (as far back as current records allow)... Beginning with his breakout performance of the season on July 30 in which he blasted two two-run home runs against Norfolk, the Tribe slugger has driven in 29 runs in 24 games and despite missing over a month due to injury currently ranks 12th in the IL with 64 RBI and ranks seventh with 30 doubles. LOPEZ LIGHTS UP THE COMPETITION: INF Pedro Lopez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in last night s contest and has now collected multiple hits in eight of his last 10 games... During his current hot streak Lopez has posted an impressive.476 batting average (20-for-42), while he has also scored at least one run in eight of 10 contests as well... Overall, Lopez has averaged two hits and a run in each of The current multi-hit explosion also included a streak of six straight games with multiple base knocks for Lopez which exceeded his previous best streak of four-straight games with multiple hits from August 8-11, 2002 when he was a member of Single-A Bristol... The right handed slugger has seen several interesting trends in his play this season as he is batting.421 (16-for-38) against left handers versus.291 (16-for-55) against right handers, hitting.413 (19-for-46) in 13 games on the road versus.277 (13-for-47) in 16 games at home, batting.415 (22-for-53) when he plays at second base, hitting a team best.426 (20-for-47) in the month of August, batting.458 (11-for-24) when he leads off an inning and hitting.833 (5-for-6) in the ninth inning. BRIAN ON THE BASES: OF Brian Myrow went 1-for-4 in last night s contest and has now reached base in 23 of his last 26 games... The left handed slugger has also been the Indians hottest hitter over the Tribe s last five games as he is batting.429 (9-for-21) with four runs, one home run and four RBI... The 32-year-old also continues to rank among the International League s best in walks (T-4th, 58) and on-base percentage (4th,.401). BOZIED BREAKS THROUGH: Indians OF Tagg Bozied went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and a two-run long ball against Columbus in last night s contest and has now reached base in 18 of his last 20 contests... During that streak, which began on August 3, Bozied has seen his batting average raise 70 points (from.200 to.270), has scored 16 of his 21 runs, belted two of his four home runs and driven in seven of his 13 RBI. POWELL CONTINUES TO PERFORM OUT OF THE PEN: Despite taking the loss in Sunday night s contest against Columbus, reliever Jeremy Powell still allowed just one run over his four innings out of the bullpen... The right hander continues to excel in relief work this season as he has posted a 4-2 record and collected four saves to go along with a 2.70 ERA (13 ER in 43.1 IP) out of the Tribe bullpen this season... Since his last start on July 9, Powell has been nothing short of dominant in relief as he has allowed just two earned runs over 16 innings of work for a 1.12 ERA as well 11 strikeouts and just three walks during that span.
