As we cntinue t rely mre and mre n technlgy, it is imperative that we take a step back and learn basic utdr skills like using a cmpass, reading a map, and putting the tw tgether t navigate. Students will gain becme prficient in these areas by learning a skill, practicing it, and finally perfecting it. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upn cmpletin f this curse students will be able t: Label all f the parts f a cmpass and knw what they are used fr Sht an azimuth Find reverse azimuths Orient a map Knw the clrs f a map and what they represent Read and understand cntur lines Use terrain assciatin fr finding lcatin Understand infrmatin fund n a map (legend) Understand declinatin Prperly demnstrate hw t get an azimuth frm the map t sht with a cmpass Demnstrate prper reverse triangulatin Create a rute with waypints n a map CLASS PROCEDURES Class Structure This class is designed t be interactive and experiential. It is imprtant that students attend each f the three meeting times. The tw Wednesday meetings will primarily be lecture based, but will still be very hands-n. Please cme t these meetings prepared t spend time inside and utside. The Saturday that we meet will be cmpletely field based. Please dress apprpriately t be cmfrtable and safe in the ut-f-drs fr the duratin f the day. Ensure that yu have plenty f snacks, lunch, water, durable ftwear (n flip flps). Depending n the weather, please bring warm clthes and sme type f water prf shell. CLASS ASSIGNMENTS Participatin: (40%) The biggest prtin f yur grade will cme frm participatin. This includes taking part in discussin during lectures, being a prductive member f the team, and being n time/ready t participate. Skills Demnstratin: (30%) As mentined, this class is almst entirely interactive and experimental. The instructrs are teaching a tangible skill that, by the end f this class, everyne shuld be able t prperly demnstrate. During the field day, using a checklist, instructrs will evaluate student s prficiency in the skills that have been taught thrughut the curse. Written Exam: (10%) At the end f the curse students will take a shrt fill in the blank/shrt answer quiz pertaining t the land navigatin material that has been cvered in the curse. Reflective Paper: (20%) The final part f the grade will cme frm writing a shrt reflective paper abut yur experience in this class. The paper can cver a variety f aspects, such as: what yu learned abut yurself in this class, what yu knw nw that yu didn t knw befre, hw the utdrs plays a rle in yur life, what rle wuld yu like the utdrs t play in yur life, etc. The reflective paper shuld be tw-three pages, duble spaced, have ne inch margins, and be typed in 12 pint Times New Rman fnt.
