We have a limited number of free seating options available on the apron, in North Tiki Area and at Corona Beach Bar on the south side of the Grandstand. The legendary Florida Derby, first contested in 1952, brings together Thoroughbred racing s best horses and jockeys as well as memorable events throughout the week and weekend, and an incredible day and evening of entertainment, dining, fashion and, of course, world-class racing. The Florida Derby has become one of the world s most important races on the Road to the Triple Crown. In the first 67 runnings of the Florida Derby, 44 of its starters have gone on to win a remarkable 59 Triple Crown events. There have been 24 Kentucky Derby winners, 19 Preakness winners and 16 Belmont winners. In fact, the Florida Derby s history just gets richer and richer, with three of the last six Florida Derby winners going on to win the Kentucky Derby. To think the Florida Derby, originally a homegrown race that featured local marching bands, has grown into a nationally-televised event attracting celebrities from around the world demonstrates the growth of Florida Thoroughbred racing and Gulfstream Park.
