General Manager One month closer to spring! Certainly, the first two months of 2019 did not bring a change in the wet weather pattern we saw in 2018. We all keep saying it s got to change I say, March is the month Although not much golf was played in February, it was great to see the member support of our social events. Our first event of the month was Escape Night. Based on the escape kits we purchased, we had to limit attendance to 48, and we filled that easily. This was our first try at the escape night, and we learned some things. We will definitely have the event again with some enhancements. We made a last-minute call to open the Grill for the Super Bowl and that was a big success as well. (especially for us Pat s fans!) Valentine s Dinner and Margarita Night were also very well supported, and the Guest Bartender Night raised $157 for the Wayside Food Bank. This year we have placed an emphasis on offering a variety of social events such as the ones mentioned, and again, we are so pleased that they are off to a good start. March has some great events on the calendar, so please try and join us for Ice Breaker Golf on the 2 nd, Stir Fry Night on the 7 th, Golf Winter Mixer and our Mardi Gras Party on the 8 th, St. Patrick s Day dinner on the 15 th, and St. Patrick s Day golf of the 16 th (yes, we know St. Patrick s Day is the 17 th, but we thought we would make a weekend of it!) Just to name a few. Of course, please consult our full calendar on the website for details. You may have noticed a change to the calendar page. We changed the format to make it more easily readable, and you will see a hyperlink next to each event that will take to the event flyer for full details. I hope you find the change helpful. Both the WGA and MGA held meetings in February and are planning out a great schedule of events for your enjoyment and to feed your competitive spirit! Andy is putting Tuesday and Thursday evening league information together. We are trying to revive the Tuesday league, so please consider signing up! Other happenings; The Rod & Gun Club meets on the 6 th The Social Club is on the road in March with a trip to the Fredericksburg Theatre on the 20 th. And the re-formed Advisory Committee will meet on the 21 st before the SPPOA meeting. The Point Grill will be open for the season on Tuesdays beginning March 12 th, it will continue to remain closed on Mondays. Sunday hours for the Point Grill extend to 6:00 pm starting on the 17 th We will be hosting one of our biggest events of the year, the UM Charles Regional Medical Center Celebration Gala or C-Ball on the 23 rd. Please note on Friday the 22 nd the Grill room will be open with limited seating, and the dining room will be closed as we begin our setup for the C-Ball. Curbside service will be available on both the 22 nd and 23 rd until 8:00 pm. All the best, Peter Gardner, PGA General Manager
Course News February continued on with the wet pattern from 2018. Swan Point received 3.75 of rain and also a snow storm in the middle of the month. The ground water table cannot hold anymore water. In my 9 years here, I have never seen all the ponds over flowing this bad. The water is draining, but very slowly. The grounds crew is staying on top of all the pipe outlets and inlets to help aid the issue. Its hard to tell what kind of weather March will bring. Hopefully the forecast includes dry conditions and an early warm up. In the month of March the grounds crew will be getting ready for spring play. The crew will do a course wake up on the greens and if the weather stays above freezing the bermudagrass should start breaking dormancy. A greens wake up is when the ground crew will veriticut the greens and start mowing on a regular basis this will provide a stimulation to the plant that s its time to wake up. The first chance the grounds crew gets to be on the fairways a soil tine will be done. This soil tine will go down in the soil profile about 8 for a variety of reason. First, it will relieve any soil compaction from 2018 to the present. Second, it will open the ground for drying the upper level of soil. Ideally, common practices indicate that allowing the warmer air to get to the soil can help with the green up on the bermudagrass. While this is the plan, these common practices can only take place if the air and ground temperatures stay above freezing. Pro Shop News As the month of February comes to close, the same story is upon us. Mother Nature took over again this month and limited the amount of playable days for golfers to enjoy our beautiful course. As we turn to March, we have many exciting club events this month. The Ice Breaker Two Person Scramble will be held on March 2nd and the Annual St. Patrick's Day Scramble will be on March 16th. Signup is ongoing in the pro shop now and we hope to see you all there! On March 8th, we are having a "Golf Mixer" at the club from 5-8. Starting at 5:00, our Director of Instruction Ned Spearbeck will be heading a Rules of Golf Seminar. There are many new rule changes this year and you don't want to miss this! Following the Rules Seminar, members of the MGA and WGA will be available for any questions about joining and upcoming 2019 tournaments. Come see what it's like to be a part of these two great groups. Great people and great competition! The Golf staff will also be available to answer any membership questions you may have and talk about the exciting new Tuesday Night League that will start this April. It's a FREE event to attend and don't forget to check out the great deals in the Pro Shop that night only and stick around following the mixer as we have a band provided for you. The end of the month will kick off the start of the golf season as the WGA Opening Day is March 30th and March 31st is the MGA Opening Day! We are very excited for the warm weather and the 2019 Golf Season to begin. It's going to be a great year! Andy Donaty Director of Golf Swan Point Yacht & Country Club 301-259-0047 Ext. 12

NEW CONSTRUCTION AND REQUESTS FOR MODIFICATIONS/ CHANGES None NON-CRITICAL AREA TREE REMOVAL REQUESTS None ARC REMINDERS: Spring is right around the corner and it s a great time take a look at your foundation plantings and see if they are dead, dying, overgrown or just in need of some tender loving care. Foundation plantings are required around the perimeter of your home and the majority of them must be evergreen. The ARC will addressing any issues with foundation plantings this spring and will be sending out letters to any homes that need some attention. Neighbors, please keep your pets on a leash when you are walking them. Your pets might be the most friendly but when a dog without a leash approaches another dog walker it can be intimidating to both the dog and the owner. For the safety of the community, please use a leash when walking your dog. Also, don t forget to clean up the waste when your pet goes potty outside. The simple act of picking up after your dog by scooping the poop can assist in removing harmful nutrients and bacteria from local waterways, keep our citizens healthy and our yards and shoes clean. Vehicle signage in Swan Point is limited to bumper stickers. There are several ways to remain in compliance if you have a vehicle with lettering on it. Lettering on vehicles can be covered with solid colored magnetic sign boards. Vehicles with lettering can be parked in your garage or covered with a car cover. Beginning in March, the ARC will be moving the meeting date to Thursday. Meetings will be the 2 nd and 4 th Thursday of each month at 10:00 am. The Architectural Review Committee meets at 10:00 am, at the Clubhouse on the 2 nd and 4 th Thursday of each month. Requests must be received at the SPPOA office by 9:00a.m the Friday before a scheduled ARC meeting. Questions may be directed to the CMC On-Site Manager at: (301) 259-2100. Office hours are: 8-3: T, TH & FR
