Benefits for All. Perfection in Top-Class Sport and Education Excellence in Mind and Body is the motto of the International University Sports Federation FISU, neatly summarising the perfect combination of top-class sport and education by the Winter Universiade athletes. Students from over 540 universities and colleges and more than 50 countries will be travelling to Central Switzerland for the Winter Universiade. Education is a key aspect of the Winter Universiade programme: a scientific conference will be held during the event, and students from Switzerland will be actively involved in the event organisation. Their participation in this major project will provide them with opportunities for personal development and experience for their later careers. The Universiade atmosphere is unique. Even better, on my third and final run I won the gold medal. Unfortunately the age limit now prevents me from competing, but I don t want to miss out on the Universiade spirit I became Head of the Snowboard Section for the Swiss team. Patrizia Kummer, Universiade and Olympic Snowboard gold medallist with a master degree in neuropsychology and developmental psychology
A Winter Sports Destination in the Limelight Winter sports have a long tradition in Switzerland. As early as 1900, daring pioneers from all over Europe met in Central Switzerland to ski. The tradition is alive today: Central Switzerland offers attractive and well-developed winter sports facilities. This existing infrastructure allows the world student games to be held in the heart of the Alps on a sustainable basis. The reports of over 500 media workers will bring the region and the event into the limelight of the sporting world for eleven days. I am convinced that the TV images and reports of the Winter Universiade will produce a significant increase in awareness of Central Switzerland as a winter sports destination. Marcel Perren, Director of Lucerne Tourism A World-Famous Host City The development of the City of Lucerne since 1830 is closely connected to the increase in tourism. To this day, tourism is still a vital economic sector of this world-renowned city. Lucerne registers about 1.2 million overnight stays and nearly 8 million day visitors per year. From the 21st to the 31st January 2021, Central Switzerland will be greeting winter sports athletes from all over the world at Lucerne hotels with Welcome home. Hospitality has a long tradition in Lucerne. We are looking forward to welcoming our young guests from all over the world. Beat Züsli, Lucerne City Council President
