JOHNNY JONES Head Coach 5th Year at LSU (17th Year as Head Coach) The burning desire and passion, combined with the love of his alma mater, has made Johnny Jones and LSU a strong fit together as he enters his fifth year as head coach. Jones has proven his recruiting ability with multiple top five ranked classes and 80 wins in four years at LSU, the most four-year win total by any head coach in school history. In fact, his first three wins in the 2016-17 season will push him past both C. C. Stroud and Press Maravich into fourth on the LSU Coaches win list behind only the three longest tenured coaches in school history who combined to handle the head coaching position for a period of 65 years. More notably, all four years he has posted non-losing seasons in the difficult Southeastern Conference and his 40 league wins is the second best start among present league coaches who have been on the job at least four years. But there are numbers that have to be taken into account when it comes to Jones first-four years at LSU: 13 Number of graduates in four years Every basketball player that has reached their senior season with the program under Jones has graduated from LSU, including three who returned to school during his tenure. 1 No. 1 NBA Draft selection (Ben Simmons, 2016) Simmons became just the second LSU player to be picked No. 1 in the draft, joining Shaquille O Neal (who Coach Jones was on the bench for as an assistant at LSU). 4 NBA Draft selections last three years. -- Johnny O Bryant III (2014, Milwaukee); Jarell Martin (1st rd, Memphis, 2015)) and Jordan Mickey (Boston, 2015); and, Ben Simmons (No. 1, Philadelphia) in 2016. 80 Wins (three shy of moving into fourth all-time at LSU) 2 Post-season appearances 9 All-SEC selections 3 -- Ranking in college basketball in 2016 in increase in average attendance from 8,897 in 2015 to 11,383 this past season. $200,000 Money raised for Baton Rouge area flood relief by the Shaquille O Neal-Coach Johnny Jones Golf Tournament. For Jones, just the fifth LSU alum to hold the top position in the men s basketball program and the third to have played and serve as head coach, his beliefs about reaching out to fans and giving them an exciting style of basketball to watch in the Maravich Center has been a strong selling point to fans and recruits alike. Jones, in his coaching career, has aimed to put teams on the floor that will play hard from start to finish and play a style of basketball that makes players want to come to LSU to showcase their talent in a team concept. His teams have averaged well over 70 points a game the last four years and has shown the ability to rally when necessary, including 10 times when down by five or more at the half. Jones has a job that he has been preparing for years to accept and that call to be the head coach at LSU came on April 13, 2012. He returned to a place he had spent many years playing and coaching. It was the dream job scenario and what he did after leaving LSU the first time prepared him to make this return successful. Jones believes in one of the long-time philosophies of LSU basketball HIT Hard. Intelligent. Together. It s a philosophy that LSU players learn very quickly that if they play hard, play with intelligence and play together, a lot of good things can happen. Throw in Family and you have the mantra of LSU Basketball under Johnny Jones. It s a family that has worked together at such times as flood relief, unloading a giant 18-wheeler of supplies from Shaq for a local area, or making an annual visit to the local hospital children s wing to sing Christmas carols to patients. It s reading in school to kids or visiting and learning from children at the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired. It has been that way since day one for Coach Jones as he has gone out of its way to embrace all aspects of this community. This is Jones third career head coaching position as he served as the interim head coach at the University of Memphis during the 1999-2000 season and began his run as the head coach at the University of North Texas prior to the 2001-02 season. The Mean Green advanced to four of the last six Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship games, which included each of the final three seasons Jones was the head coach there (2010, 2011, 2012). Under Jones, the Mean Green averaged 21 wins per year over his last six seasons which included a school record 24 wins in 2010 and a pair of SBC titles and NCAA Tournament trips. When Johnny Jones suited up for his first game as an LSU Tiger against Colgate in the Great Alaskan Shootout on Nov. 28, 1980, it would mark the first of 121 games that he would play for LSU. Then the player would turn assistant coach and be on the bench with Coach Brown for another 407 contests. Jones is the only person in LSU history to both play (1981) and coach (1986, assistant) in an NCAA Final Four. After his Tigers went to the 2015 NCAA Tournament, he became the first person to play for the Tigers in an NCAA Tournament, serve as an assistant coach for LSU in the NCAA Tournament and to be LSU head coach in an NCAA Tournament game. After Coach Brown s retirement following the 1996-97 season, Jones moved to Memphis to serve as Associated Head Coach in 1998 and 1999. Jones was named the interim head coach at Memphis just prior to the 1999-00 season and then spent a year as an assistant coach in the SEC with Alabama (2001). He was named the head coach at North Texas on April 16, 2001, where he stayed until the LSU job became his in April 2012. LAST TIME OUT -- UGA 82, LSU 80 (FEB. 25, ATHENS, GEORGIA) LSU s setback at Georgia on Saturday proved to be particularly heartbreaking after watching the players put together an effort that was as lengthy and consistent in the second half as just about any game in the league this season. The Tigers rallied from 17 points down with 8:15 to go in the first half to cut the game to seven points at the half, 44-37, and then from 13 down with 16:54 left in the game to take a 78-77 lead with 1:25 left. The margin went to 80-77 with 52 seconds left before Georgia scored to make it, 80-79. After LSU failed to convert on three attempts on its next possession, Georgia s J. J. Frazier drove to the goal and a foul was called resulting in two free throws that put Georgia up with 1.6 to play. Antonio Blakeney was able to keep his string of 20 point games with 20 against the Bulldogs, while Brandon Sampson added 15 points (6 rebounds, 6 assists) and Skylar Mays added 15 as well. Brian Bridgewater came off the bench to have one of his best scoring games since 2015 with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting and 3-of-3 free throw shooting in 17 minutes. The Tigers shot 46.7 percent for the game, made 7 treys and 17-of-20 free throws and out rebounded Georgia, 34-29, with a 14-6 advantage in points off turnovers The loss was LSU s 15th straight, the longest in modern day LSU basketball records, eclipsing the 14 straight streak from the mid-1960s. LSU s last win was Jan. 4 at Missouri, 56 days ago. BLAKENEY WITH 6 AMAZING SCORING GAMES Sophomore Antonio Blakeney has had six amazing games, not only six straight over 20 points, but four of those games were of at least 28 points. He shot 50 percent or better from three-point range in four of the six. At the free throw line, Blakeney is 26-of-32 (81.2%) in the last four games and in the last three, he has gone to the line four times for three shots after being fouled on trey attempts, making 10-of-12. Blakeney s six straight games over 20 points marks the first time an LSU player has had six straight games over 20 points since Marcus Thornton had six straight over 20 points in the period from Jan. 12, 2008 to Feb. 2, 2008. No other LSU player has had six straight dating back to stats check to the 2000-01 season. MORE BLAKENEY NUMBERS For the season, Blakeney is now averaging 17.9 points overall and 18.6 in the 16 SEC games. In the last six games, Blakeney has raised his scoring average 2.3 points. It should be remembered that this was Blakeney s big part of the season a year ago as he averaged 18.6 points over the final 10 games of the season. Blakeney is +5.3 right now on his full season average as a freshman of 12.6 points a game. In the eight SEC road games, Blakeney has averaged 22.0 points per game and has made 20-of-41 three-point field goals. Scoring 21 and 29 in his last two SEC home games, has helped his Maravich Center league scoring average move to 15.3 points per game and he has improved to 10-of-33 at home from the arc. He has had two 20-10 games, joining teammate Duop Reath who had one early in the 2016-17 season. Blakeney now has 22 games of 20 points or more and since the start of the 2010-11 season, Blakeney has moved past Ben Simmons (18) for the most 20 point games since that point by an LSU player. Blakeney is averaging 33.1 minutes per game, 4th in the league. His scoring average is ranked fifth overall in the SEC and his league average is ranked fourth Blakeney s field goal percentage of 47 percent (183-389) is now seventh in the league He is shooting 47.6 percent in league games, fifth in the SEC. DUOP REATH LSU s first-year junior-college transfer forward Duop Reath had a season high of rebounds on Feb. 4 against A&M when he pulled down 16 rebounds to go with 16 points and two blocks. It was the most rebounds since he debuted on Nov. 12 as he joined the 20 point-10 rebound club, posting 23 points and 14 rebounds in a 91-69 win over Wofford. Against Arkansas (2/11), Reath had his sixth double double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. He is one of five players in the Johnny Jones era to have at least two 15-rebound games: Ben Simmons (2015-16) 5 Jordan Mickey (2013-15) 3 Jarell Martin (2013-15) 3 Duop Reath (2016-17) 2 Reath is averaging 12.3 points per game and 6.2 rebounds along with 1.4 blocks a game. He is 13th in rebounds, fourth in field goal percentage (146-285, 51.2%) and T10 in blocked shots. He has scored in double figures in 19 games Reath will be looking to get his game back from the field, having scored just 11 points combined in the last two games while going 5-of-17 from the field. TWO-POINTERS AN LSU OFFENSIVE STAPLE Throughout the season, the two-point field goal has been one of the staples of the LSU offense with LSU shooting 50.0 percent inside the arc, one of 143 teams that is shooting 50 percent or better from inside the arc The Tigers average scoring 42.6 points inside the arc and that is 15th in the nation according to TEAMRANKINGS.com LSU is getting 56.9 percent of its points from inside the arc and that ranks the 24th highest percentage in Division I. Tennessee enters off an 82-55 road loss at South Carolina on Saturday afternoon Robert Hubbs III, who was 7-of-14 from the field in scoring 16 points, was the only player in double figures Hubbs leads the team with a 14.4 scoring average and Grant Williams averages 12.6 points a game. Rick Barnes is in his second season as head coach at Tennessee. Tennessee has a 64-45 lead in the series after the teams split games a year ago with Tennessee winning in Knoxville and LSU winning in the SEC Tournament, 84-75. Since the start of 2010, Tennessee has an 8-2 record against LSU. The series is tied at 25-25 in games in Baton Rouge and Tennessee has won the last five in the Maravich Center. LSU s last win at home game was in 2006. SENIOR TRIBUTE FOR BRIAN BRIDGEWATER, BRANDON EDDLESTONE Tonight will be the final home game for seniors Brian Bridgewater and Brandon Eddlestone and both are getting minutes and opportunities because of how they have worked this season. Bridgewater has appeared in 20 games this year and his game against Georgia (2/25) was his best scoring game since 2015. He came off the bench to play 17 minutes, hitting 3-of-4 field goals and making 3-of-3 from the free throw line. The Baton Rouge senior, who has battled minor injuries since after his sophomore season when he played 29 games, has played in 16-of-the-last 18 games (20 this season) and he is averaging 1.2 points and 0.7 rebounds a game. For three years, Eddlestone was a walk-on who got to see occasional action late in a few games This season he became a scholarship player as prior to the start of practice, Brandon Eddlestone was given a scholarship by the LSU coaching staff. Eddlestone s season took a turn against South Carolina (2/1) as Johnny Jones, not getting the play from his forwards that he was hoping for, put Eddlestone in the game during the final four minutes of the first half. Eddlestone was diving on the floor, keeping balls alive by tapping them around and then got an offensive rebound for a bucket. In the second half, he would play seven more minutes and got the ball on the right wing and buried a three-pointer much to the delight of the crowd at the Maravich Center. He finished with six points and four rebounds in 11 minutes, all career highs He was back in for seven minutes in the Kentucky game (2/7). After sitting out the Arkansas game (2/11), he was back in during the first half at Ole Miss (2/14) where he got an offensive rebound and a put back in the 11 minutes that he played. He returned for six more minutes in the second half to total a career high of 17, scoring three points. He then played 12 minutes at Alabama (2/18) with a team-game high six rebounds and got another 12 versus Auburn (2/21), making a three-pointer, getting an assist and scoring three. He is now averaging 1.3 points this season and 2.0 rebounds as his work ethic and efforts have begun to pay off at the end of his career. Eddlestone, from Slidell, is a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. BRANDON SAMPSON Brandon Sampson s game at Georgia (2/25) marks his seventh game in the last eight in double figures. Sampson s 15 point effort was an all-around game as he also added six rebounds and six assists while shooting 6-of-10 from the field and 2-of-4 from the arc. He is the third player on this LSU team (joining Antonio Blakeney and Duop Reath) to put together at least five consecutive double figure scoring games during the course of the season. He had his third 20-point game of the season of 21 versus Texas A&M (2/4). He has 17 total double figure scoring games this season. After averaging just 4.0 points a year ago, Sampson has started 23 games, including the last eight, and is averaging 27.3 minutes per game, 11.3 points and 3.2 rebounds. For the season, he is 110-of-234 (47.0%) with 36 treys. Here s a comparisons of his freshman and sophomore seasons: Freshman 4.0 ppg/1.2 rpg/13.2 mpg/35-109, 32.1 FG%/18-67, 26.9 3FG%/19-27, 70.4 FT%/ Sophomore 11.3 ppg/3.2 rpg/27.3 mpg/110-234, 47.0 FG%/36-107, 33.6 3FG%/59-80, 73.8% FT% His most impressive game until the A&M game was the 30 minutes in the Old Dominion (11/24) win when he hit 7-of-10 FGs with a trey and helped seal the game as part of his 9-of-9 FTs. It all added up to a career high of 24 points. SKYLAR MAYS Baton Rouge s Skylar Mays had the second best game of his freshman season at Ole Miss (2/14) when he scored 19 points with three assists and four steals in 34 minutes. Mays was 6-of-10 from the field overall and 3-of-4 from the arc to go with 4-of-4 free throws. He was back in double figures at Georgia (2/25) with 15 points hitting 4-of-8 field goals, including his only trey and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. It was his 11th double figure scoring game of the year. Nine of those games have come in SEC play. Mays high game was 22 points at Arkansas (1/21) He is averaging 23.0 minutes per game, 7.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Since the start of SEC play, he has raised his average from 4.9 points to 7.8 points and his SEC scoring average is 10.2 points a game. The freshman has started the last seven games and 22 overall. Mays has 14 games of four assists or more highlighted by 11 assists and just one turnover in 23 minutes against Houston (11/29). Mays 11 assists in the win over Houston was the most by an LSU player in the Johnny Jones era and he became the fifth player in that time span to record 10 or more assists joining Ben Simmons, Tim Quarterman, Josh Grady and Charles Carmouche. Mays is 10th in overall assist average in the SEC. He has 104 assists and 61 turnovers, a 1.7 assist-to-turnover ratio that is 2016-17 LSU MEN S BASKETBALL
eighth in the SEC. TIGERS HAVE LOCAL CONNECTION STRONG AGAIN The Tigers have a Baton Rouge connection working again this season with scholarship players sophomore Brandon Sampson and freshmen Skylar Mays and Wayde Sims joined by senior Brandon Bridgewater and walk-on Reed Vial hailing from Baton Rouge. Another walk-on, Marshall Graves, prepped in Baton Rouge (at U-High) but is from Ponchatoula, Louisiana... In all, the 14-player LSU roster has eight players from the state of Louisiana. JALYN PATTERSON Junior Jalyn Patterson, who has been featured primarily at the off-guard position during his first two years and who is still in that role at times this season, has started 10 games for LSU. Patterson has had 11 games of five assists or more during the season, topped by the eight against North Florida (11/18) and 7 in the Bahamas against VCU (11/25). Patterson had seven assists in the VCU game, but has also shown a guard s rebounding mentality with nine boards against Wichita St. (11/23) and seven in the ODU win (11/24). He has posted six assists twice in the league against Vandy (12/29) and Mississippi State (1/7). After two scoreless games, he was able to score five points in 11 minutes in the Auburn game (2/21) and seven at Georgia (2/25). He is now averaging 5.5 points per game to go with 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game... Patterson needs two assists to become the 32nd LSU player to have 200 career assists and in the UK (2/7) game became the 26th player at LSU to grab 100 steals. WAYDE SIMS Sims has scored 25 points combined in the last three games with 10 at Alabama, six versus Auburn and nine at Georgia (2/25). In the Georgia game he hit 4-of-7 field goals, including an important three late in the second half. Sims, the freshman from Baton Rouge, showed his ability on the boards against South Carolina (2/1) as he grabbed a season high 11 rebounds as part of an 8-point, 11-board evening. He followed that with a season-best 15-point effort against Texas A&M (2/4) that again showed his ability to shoot from the field. Sims has had seven double figure games and is averaging 6.7 points and 4.0 rebounds. He is now shooting 50.3% from the field (73-of-145) and 14-of-33 from the arc (42.4%). He is 10-of-10 over the last five games at the free throw line. His big splash came in the loss to Vandy on Dec. 29 in the conference opener. LSU was down 20 in the final 10 minutes to Vandy when Sims came off the bench and he proceeded to hit four treys between the 8:15 and 6:53 mark to help trim the Commodore lead to nine. For Sims it was his then-season high of 14 points. His dad, Wayne, played for LSU in the late 1980s/early 1990s including the 1991 SEC Championship team. AARON EPPS After a couple of non-scoring games, Epps came off the bench at Kentucky (2/7) to play 17 minutes, hitting 4-of-6 field goals, including a trey, to score nine points with three rebounds. He again came off the bench at Ole Miss (2/14) and played 31 minutes for the Tigers making 4-of-8 shots and scoring 11 points with 11 rebounds for his third career double double. That moved him back into the starting lineup at Alabama (2/18). Epps had seven points against Auburn (2/21), hitting a trey and 4-of-4 from the line. Aaron Epps didn t have his best game of the year scoring wise, but it would have to be considered one of the best overall games of his LSU career as he had 15 points and 13 rebounds in a career high 34 minutes at Auburn (1/18). Epps started the first five games of the season, scoring 17 against Wofford and had 14 versus North Florida. He has started 18 games in all. Epps has had seven double figure scoring games He is averaging 5.8 points and 4.3 rebounds a game while averaging 17 minutes a contest. KIERAN HAYWARD Freshman Kieran Hayward has been able in some games to find his mark He played a season tying high of 17 minutes against Texas Southern (12/17), scoring 8 points on 3-of-4 shooting that included two treys with three rebounds. He poured in a trey to close out a long scoring run for LSU in the Mizzou win. He again had 8 points with two treys and two free throws in 14 minutes against Mississippi State (1/7). Hayward was back in double figure minutes, playing 13 at Auburn (1/14). He had a season high of five rebounds in that game. He played 12 minutes against Alabama (2/18). Hayward is now averaging 1.3 points, 1.1 rebounds and 8.6 minutes per game for the 23 games he has entered. He is looking to break a shooting slump that has not seen him make a field goal attempt since the Jan. 7 Mississippi State game (0-for-14). BRANDEN JENKINS Junior college transfer Branden Jenkins was finally able to get on the floor in the Vandy game (12/29). He played 19 minutes and hit 2-of-6 field goals including a trey in scoring five points. He next saw good minutes in the Mississippi State game (1/7), playing 13 and against scoring five points. He started the games versus A&M (1/11) and Alabama (1/14) and had four assists in the Alabama game (1/14) He played nine minutes versus Auburn (2/21), hitting a trey and two free throws for his third five point game. Jenkins was discovered to have an issue in his leg during his preseason physical that needed surgery and so he was unable to play in the first 11 games. Graves wasn t quite as lucky as Eddlestone as his three-point attempt missed, but he did score two points earlier in the year against VCU (11/25). He has played in 13 games so far this year. JUNIOR ELBERT ROBINSON III Elbert Robinson had one of best efforts of the season at Auburn (1/18) scoring eight points on 4-of-5 field goal attempts while playing eight minutes. He started for the first time this season against Florida (1/25) and in nine minutes made 3-of-4 field goal attempts to finish with six points. In his last six appearances, he is a combined 8-of-11 from the field, scoring 18 points. Robinson is 17-of-28 (60.7%) from the field for the year and is averaging 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds.
