If you re looking at the courts and can t put your finger on what s different here s a hint...they re BLUE! The court resurfacing project is half way done and they look great. They are in the process of adding fat baselines so there won t be any more bad calls! The project is expected to be done before combo season starts. Speaking of combo, the season gets under way the week of the 12th and runs through December. With the USTA s adjustment in the Mixed Doubles season we will have another adult league before we have a Mixed season. If your itching for some Mixed Doubles the sign-ups for the WCRC Fall Mixed season is going on now, the season just got started and will run into January. Summer Singles is almost over and the tournament is one month away. Get your last minute matches in and we will see you at the tourney. See you on the courts! Monday Night Football Challenge Attention Pass holders! Play any time on Monday at the Tennis Center and you can win $50 in pro shop credit. Just guess the winning score and team. See or call the pro shop for more details. Round Robin Challenge with the Pro(s) This fall, all interested players (18 and over, 3.5 and above) are invited to come out and have a chance to play with one or more of Lifetime s teaching staff. Joe Noth will lead this fun new challenge at Heather. Court Usage in 2012 Based on usage patterns and activity trends over the past 18 months, Lifetime Tennis has decided to provide additional time for USTA matches at the Tennis Center. Beginning in January, matches may begin as early as 11am on select weekend days. Additionally, the 5 line USTA Spring Adult League matches will be permitted to play on 5 courts during both the regular season and playoff games. In an ongoing effort to seek balanced usage, Lifetime Tennis will continue to track, review and adjust the facility s court allocation plan as necessary. Tennis Center Improvements Resurfacing - All 10 tennis courts should be resurfaced by September 10th. Bumps and depressions are being leveled out, 4 baseline markings are being added, and net posts being painted. The teaching courts (8-10) are having the large crack filled in and covered; along with adding 10 and under blended lines in addition to the standard 78 court lining. Windscreens - New windscreens will be placed on courts 4-7 once the courts have been repainted; as will the practice wall area behind court 9. Courtyard renovation - Next spring (2012), the City will be removing the cement courtyard area between court 4 and the clubhouse and replacing it with a new base. City architects and the engineering department met with Lifetime Tennis to determine possible improvements to the space. And while the existing budget is limited to cement replacement, Lifetime has requested a cost estimate associated with possible shade solutions to that area. Backboard area and space adjacent to court 5 & 8 - the following is a statement provided by Todd Trimble, City of Walnut Creek Recreation Manager Parks staff removed overgrown vegetation from around the practice court as well as from the area between N. San Carlos Drive and court #10. The shrubs and bushes were creating concealed spaces ideal for illegal activity and mulch and new plant material will be added. In fact, the tennis center has received several calls from potential patrons who indicated they were not even aware that there were tennis courts in Heather Farm Park until they became visible from Ygnacio Valley Road as a result of this effort. Lastly, Lifetime Tennis will be adding a windscreen to the backboard court in early September to finish off the project. Parks Division workers also helped transform an unusable 2500 square foot area of vegetation and rock adjacent to courts #5 and #8. They removed more overgrown vegetation and stumps. Then the Streets Division removed soil, added and compacted base rock, and finally added 4 of quarter by dust decorative gravel which was also compressed and smoothed to a useful and aesthetically pleasing surface that will be conducive to a number of practical uses. That was a very large job and very much appreciated. The Court Reporter September 2011 3
