A Word From The Publisher Time flies when you are having fun. That is what they say. A friend of mine pointed out to me years ago that according to U. S. Government Life Expectancy Tables middle age is 41. As many of you know, life after 41 is a slippery slope. Well folks, Skeet shooting is a great life sport. I hope to be shooting Skeet for many more years. Fortunately, I do not have to win tournaments to enjoy the sport. I tell people that it s kind of like fishing. You don t have to catch fish to enjoy the trip. Of course, an occasional win does a lot to perk-up your attitude! This is the June issue. We are well into our prime Skeet shooting Season. The competition and the weather are about to heat up. The Summer Solstice is June 20. That is the first official day of Summer. That said, in the South, it seems to arrive a bit earlier. I have been encouraged lately as I see some young shooters getting into the sport. I am saying thank you to all of you who coach, encourage and support youth shooting sports. That is extremely important for the future of shooting sports and the more we can do to promote youth shooters the better off we will be down the road. The Briley Louisiana Open will be held June 9, 10 and 11 at Lafayette Skeet Academy. David Hebert tells me they still have some openings if you want to come on down and pass a good time. I will not be there the whole weekend, but I hope to see some of you there on Friday. From Doug, Debbie and Skeeter at the Red Chute Gazette, we send to you our Best Wishes for a Healthy and Happy Summer. Until we meet again in these pages or on the Skeet field, I am wishing you 3 @ 8. Doug Frey Page 2

Bayou Boeuf 28 Gauge Marathon Wade Jones hosted his annual 28 Gauge Marathon at Bayou Boeuf Skeet Range in LeCompte, Louisiana on April 29. The shoot was full with 30 shooters competing. The weather man threw us some curves with winds as high as the windiest day in March. Some said that shoot should have been named the Windy Open. The targets were challenging, but it did not rain! Burt Hoffpauir was the Champion posting 96 and 94 for 190 in this 200 target 28 Gauge Marathon. The shooters enjoyed a fried catfish lunch provide by Monroe s Backwoods Catering. We also had an assortment of pies for dessert from Lea s Lunchroom in LeCompte. Wade invites you to pre-register for his Doubles Marathon on July 22. Following are some photos. Most were taken by Debbie Frey, and some by me. Doug Frey Page 10

Boiled Crawfish Open Lafayette Skeet Club, near Kaplan, Louisiana, hosted the Boiled Crawfish Open on April 30. There were 23 shooters who came out to participate in this 200 target 20 Gauge Marathon Event and to enjoy the mudbugs. The day started off with a terrible rain storm that moved across the South bringing tornadoes and hail damage as it went. Fortunately for us, the weather moved through South West Louisiana and began to clear by 8 AM. By the time the shoot started, the rain was gone and we had pretty pleasant shooting conditions. Most of the wind we had experienced the day before in LeCompte at the Bayou Boeuf Skeet Range 28 Gauge Marathon was gone. The shooters came to play. David Hebert won the Champion honors, but he had to beat Andrew Howze in a shoot-off to do so. They both posted 193s. Andrew shot his first 100 straight in the process. It was a great day for the Howze clan, as Andrew s younger brother Anthony took Third with 190 Of course he had to beat Burt Hoffpauir and Mike Canaday in a shoot-off to do so. Anthony also shot his first 25 straight this day. M. Anthony Howze, Burt Hoffpauir and Mike Canaday Page 15

Gertrude Hurlbutt Open Red Chute Shogun Sports Club on Barksdale, AFB hosted the Gertrude Hurlbutt Open on May 20,2017. A weather front moved into Louisiana from Texas bringing a line of showers and rain storms across the state from South to North. Fortunately, most of the rain missed us. Unfortunately, the weatherman did frighten off some of our friends who were traveling from 3 hours away. So a shoot that was to be enjoyed by 30 plus Skeet enthusiasts was downsized to 20 hardcore shooters who would not let the weatherman spoil their day. This shoot was scheduled as a 200 target 28 Gauge Marathon. We did have a few shooters opting to shoot other guns, which we are always happy to accommodate. Jared Gay was on his game in the first 100. He posted his first 100 in the 28 Gauge! Jared followed up after lunch with a 94 which put him in a tie with my squad mate, Harry Hawthorne. Harry posted 97 before and after lunch for a 194. The tie was settled by an arm wrestle and Jared was our Champion. Randi Corley was shooting well this day posting 98 and 95 for 193 and Third Place. Owen Wright, Kacie Clanton, Randi Corley, Bobby Rains and Jared Gay Page 22

Gertrude Hurlbutt Open Harry Hawthorne, Danny Clanton, Doug Frey and Bobby Rains On Mardi Gras, Harry Hawthorne, my son Michael and I shot quail in South Mississippi. We had the pleasure of eating those birds at this shoot. Lloyd Webb fried up 44 quail and a bunch of chicken tenders using his secret recipe (supposedly taken from Colonel Sanders himself). Lloyd also cooked up a big pot of green beans with new potatoes and, of course, rice and gravy. Thank you Lloyd Webb! If that was not enough, I made two pans of Paul Dean s Ice Cream Sandwich cake for dessert. All I can say is you should have been there! If you didn t know yet, we like to eat good at Skeet shoots in Louisiana. That s my first plate pictured on the right. Page 24

Gertrude Hurlbutt Open Kacie Clanton Randi Corley Despite a few showers, the shoot went well and even finished a little early. The targets were good, the food even better and the Shooters were competitive. We want to thank Paul Williamson and his crew, Bobby Raines, Gary Sullivan, Ricky Grimsley and Philip Harris for doing a great job and putting on this shoot. Of course a big thank you goes to my bride, Debbie, for handling registration. Owen Wright Our next shoot is the June Bug, a 20 Gauge Marathon on June 17, 2017. We hope to see you then. Until then, I am wishing you 3@8. Doug Frey Page 26

Blue Angels As you know, my home club is Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on Barksdale Air Force Base. Every year, Barksdale hosts the Defenders of Liberty Air Show. This year, the Air Show was held May 6 and 7. Being averse to crowds and traffic, I have yet to make it to the big event. I do, however, manage to visit the Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on the Thursday afternoon before the Air Show each year in hopes of getting to see the United States Navy Blue Angels practice for the show. With a little luck, I can get a few pictures of them zooming over the Skeet fields. Here are a few of my pictures taken this year. Doug Frey Page 35

Funnies Did you hear about the octogenarian who went to see his doctor for a check-up. The Doc said How are you doing Bob? Bob replied, I am doing great Doc! I feel great, my energy is good, I am 84 years old and I have married a 23 year old beauty and she is pregnant with my child. What do you think about that Doc? The doctor paused for a moment and pondered the situation. The he replies Bob, your situation reminds me of a friend of mine who is about your age and who loves to hunt. The problem is that he is getting a bit forgetful. One day he decided to go hunting, but when he left the house he grabbed his umbrella instead of his rifle. As he entered the woods he was surprised by a huge grizzly bear. Instinctively, my friend popped open the umbrella. At that very moment the bear dropped dead in his tracks. What do you think of that Bob? Bob thought about this story for a moment and then responded. Doc, I believe someone else shot that bear. The doctor replied, That s pretty much what I think too, Bob! ******* A man was sitting reading his papers when his wife hit him round the head with a frying pan. What was that for? the man asked. The wife replied, That was for the piece of paper with the name Jenny on it that I found in your pants pocket. Then then man said When I was at the races last week, Jenny was the name of the horse I bet on. The wife apologized and went on with the housework. Three days later the man is watching TV when his wife bashes him on the head with an even bigger frying pan, knocking him unconscious. Upon re-gaining consciousness the man asked why she had hit again? The Wife replied, Your horse phoned. Page 43
