November 2009 Volume 38, No. 11 www.bayyachtclub.org Editor: Lisa Kelley leezer45@yahoo.com The Bowsprit Commodore, Walter Crawford, Chip Spence + Rear Commodore, Harry Armenia + Vice Commodore COMMODORE S WATCH NOVEMBER 2009 October was a very busy month for many of the BYC members. The Harvest Moon was a real adventure for many of our members, and a full report is posted on the web site. The St Patrick s Day Regatta was also well attended, and fun was had by all. The Educational Series Program was first aide and CPR, which was also well attended. The annual auction was a smashing success and I understand it set an all time record. Many items have just kept on giving as this must have been the 3 rd or 4 th year for them to be sold. Thanks to everyone that donated stuff, and to those that purchased stuff. BYC hosted Padre Island Yacht Club and we had some 52+ guests for dinner, and 22+ for breakfast. Everyone had a great time, and food was fantastic, thanks to all the great BYC chefs. And, as always the Halloween Party was a successful event with many participating. The semi-annual membership meeting was held on Oct 10 and the slate of nominees from the Nominating Committee was voted without any changes. Congratulations to the following New Officers & Directors for 2010: Commodore: Harry Armenia; Vice Commodore: Chris Colley; Rear Commodore: Chip Spence; Treasurer: Jo Ann Robertson; Secretary: Jerry Vaughn; Director, 2 yr term: Bill Carrothers; Director, 2 yr term: Russ York. The aforementioned will join the following to make your Board of Directors for 2010: Director, 1 yr remaining: Jim Robertson; Director, 1 yr remaining: Dick Frenzel; Past Commodore: Walter Crawford. The Audit Committee reported the books are now in great shape with all funds properly accounted for. The new accounting system was unveiled and a real Profit & Loss Statement along with a Balance Sheet was provided and reported to the membership. November will bring even more events for our members. The annual Turkey Day Regatta, part of the Coastal Bend Cup, will be on Nov 14. The last cruise of the year will be Nov 21 to Shamrock Cove. 2 BYC RACING NEWS Susan II, Warrior and Sea Flight: Trophy Winners for 2009 Saturday Series On a pleasantly cool fall day, Warrior took line honors to finish ahead of five other boats in the final race of the BYC 2009 Saturday Series. Starting last in the pursuit start sequence, Warrior steadily progressed through the fleet to finish 16 seconds ahead of second place Brigadoon, with whom she traded tacks and raced boat-for-boat during the final one-third of the event. Next across the finish line were our two Catalina 400s with Susan II finishing 21 seconds before SeaFlight. Starfish and Still Dreamin finished 5th and 6th respectively, 13 seconds apart. Trophy presentation for the race and the series followed dinner at the Club. Personalized photos were given to each series competitor. Susan II - 1st place; Warrior - 2nd place; SeaFlight - 3rd place; Starfish, Still Dreamin and Brigadoon - honorable mention. Mary Herrington and Donna Gibbs deserve special recognition for their race committee work. BYC could not have completed this race series without their faithful participation in every face. I ask all hands to join me in thanking the both of them for a job well done. We also appreciate the sponsorship of Joe s Crab Shack and the hats and shirts they donated for each race as well as the gear bags donated by UK-Halsey courtesy of Doug weakly. On November 14, BYC will sponsor the 2009 Turkey Day Regatta. This is the final race of the Coastal Bend Cup series. Yachts from CCYC, PIYC, RYC, MORF and BYC are anticipated to participate. Race Classes will be All Sails and 150 Class. The Notice of Regatta and entry form may be downloaded from http://www.bayyachtclub.org/ racing.htm. After the Regatta, at approximately 5:30 p.m. (time depends on when the racing is finished and boats return) BYC will serve our traditional Turkey Day Regatta South Texas chili dinner with all the fixings for race crews and BYC members. Dinner will be continuously served until after the Club s customary meal hour of 7:00 p.m. and the standard meal donation by Club members will apply. Bay Yacht Club will present trophies to Regatta winners and the Coastal Bend Cup committee will present awards to winners of the 2009 Cup. Jim Robertson BYC Race Committee TURKEY DAY REGATTA CRUISE NEWS BYC Charter Cruise Chairmen for 2010 are again Jim & Sylvia Whitworth. Getting started early, they're looking for anyone interested in chartering a sailboat. Suggested places to charter are the Caribbean (British Virgin Islands, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Belize, Leeward & Windward Islands), the Bahamas, Greece and Croatia. Times suggested so far are anytime from May through September. Trips can be one week, 10-day, or two week. In 2009 the Franks, Huddlestons and Whitworths spent nine days in the BVI, and the Swarts were there for two weeks. Everyone had a wonderful time, so ask them if you have any questions or concerns. We split the price of renting the boat, and some people flew on frequent flier miles, so it doesn't have to be very expensive. If you have any interest at all in going on a fun trip, call or e-mail the Whitworths and get on the list. This is not a commitment, just a show of interest. There will be a meeting for everyone to decide when and where to charter in 2010, and the details will be decided at that time. Sylvia Whitworth 2
