and as they are "backing up" well i can't see them being beaten St Bernard's, eftcr, a tardy start, are now playing with a 1 )it more consistency They'11 be out to prove that they can be up with the leaders Grbac, Sullivan and Nadzielski have shown the way, but this week I think that the Saints may have o setback in their conquests De La Salle to,vin North Old Boys are at home to University Blacks North were very disappointing lost w,ek after playing well the week before They s, m` to get tied up against small, running sides This week, however, they play a side that is similar to themselves and they will have to create their own running if they are to win Blacks seem to have lost a bit of tenacity and they let me down last week They are better than they have produced so for this season, but their backline will have to tighten up so that the opposition is not let in for easy goals In a close game, I will give the visiting side one more chance Blacks to get up Ormond play host to Marcellin Old Collegians today Ormond had a "knock" by A Section leaders last week, but before that they had taken all before them With Dove getting kicks around th ground and Pearce starting to get amongst the goals, Ormond will rebound full of vigour Marcellin have found this 'Section a little difficult this year, but they have not been disgraced They may have been a little unlucky previously, but with Dillon playing well around the packs and Cooper getting many speedy kicks they will certainl y be due for a win I think that Marcellin wil l give Ormond a real run for their money, but owing to the definite home ground advantage I, can't pass up Ormond University Blues are enjoying a good season and today take on Ivanhoe Blues have the strongest defence in the competition and with their power up in front of goals - through Karvelis and Sleeman - will be a force Ivanhoe have shown that they can do well but unfortunately let the opposition get away from them in one quarter Provided they don't let slip, this will be pretty close Blues to hold too many trumps and win Old Melburnians travel down to Albert Park to play AJAX AJAX accounted for North Old Boys last week very easily, who had taken care of OM 's a week earlier This makes AJAX a goals better side and through their speedy small men, Mike and Hen ry Ritterman, and with Ray Lisner taking the marks, will be very hard to beat on their home ground The Old Melburnians have played with a lot of inconsistency this year Rohan Brown, in the ruck, has shown the way in each game, and with Rick and Andy Cameron displaying good form, their side may be too tall for the fast-moving AJAX boys In a very close game, disregarding the previous two week's statistics, I think the O M 's will sneak in Selections: De La Salle D C, Blacks, Ormond, University Blues, burnians - PETER ROBERSON University Old Mel- B SECTIO N Three right last week means your tipster still faces relegation Where to really is the question? Like my learned colleague Ron Hancox, I too am finding Old Paradians my jinx side Monash Blues hit top form last week and today they will be confident against leaders, Collegians The Lion's coach, Bruce Ferguson, has his charges doing everything right The side has blended youth with experience, which is being supplied by Rice and Etherington Hibbins, who has been a top player each week, has scored goals each game, as have Parsons, Baum, Bennett, Lausson and Rice This varied attack is a Collegians strongpoint Steady improvement has been a Monash feature, with Olds starring weekly However, as Rodger has proved the only relaible Monash avenue to goal, they could be in trouble trying to match the Collegians' score today Collegians are my selection Kew, whose big win over Scotch regained them second place, await the disappointing Old Paradians, whose sojourn in B Section could well be of minimum duration Kew have had five reliable weekly avenues to goal via Haralambopolous, Burden, Bruce Smith and interstaters Blay and Fletcher Conversely, Parade has had only Nick Hughes as a reliable goal-getter Indicative of the Parade forward problem has been the fact that twenty-two players shared sixty-one goals in the first four rounds For Paradians, defender Peter Symes has proved the most consistent player For Kew, Bruce Smith and ruckman Walker have given great service On form, everything points to a Kew victory today At Headquarters, Caulfield Grammarians meet disappointing Parkside If Caulfield hope to stay within reach of the four they must win well today Their reliable players, veteran Tootell, Kanis, Matthews and Fletcher, should generate sufficient drive to defeat Parkside, whose 1980 form so far has not been up to B Section standard Chilcott, Jones and Chenhall have tried hard to lift their side, but the depth of talent has not been there to provide a Parkside victory Fawkner, now in the top four, make the long journey to Murrumbeena Dennis Groves has the Blues well motivated and in top gear, although playing well away from home has been their 1980 Achilles heel As C BC St Kilda hasn't a good home record this season, how does one forecast the result of thi s THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - MAY 17, 1980 Page 5

For the Saints, Kay, Crottie and Delaney are giving consistent performances, while Fawkner's best players have varied weekly A team could be chosen from those listed over the first four weeks The determined St Kilda defenders plus the north winds may upset Chard, and so allow the home side to snatch a narrow victory Near neighbours and long-standing rivals, Old Scotch and Old Xaverions meet today for the first time in a decade (B Section, 1970) As both sides lost last week, coaches Aghan and Green will be all out to restore lost prestige For Scotch, Xaverian ruckmen Noonan and Brimacombe pose a big problem Veteran Sierakowski, Curtain and Vale all will need close checking by the Cardinals, who in turn will again rely on Meadows, Mason, Marx and Morgan Because Old Xaverians will not place Scotch under the some pressure as Kew did, I believe their running game interspersed with judicious handball and penetrating kicks, will see Scotch take the points Selections : Collegians, Kew, Caulfield Grammarians, CB C St Kilda, Old Scotch - NORM NUGENT C SECTIO N With the Geelong bubble bursting last week there are some real problems in picking winners for today The sides in the four are already two games clear from the rest of the field, which will make entry into this area even harder Hampton Rovers have won their last four games, but none of these have really been a test They failed in their game against Old Brighton and their supporters will be waiting to see if they can handle the big guns from Geelong, who also failed against Old Brighton However, Geelong survived the test against Bulleen-Templestowe Nevertheless I am going to jump on the Roverland band-waggon and pick them at home Coburg also let me down last week, and although they are at home today I cannot imagine Old Brighton Grammarians having any trouble providing forgetful John Priestley does not forget where the ground is or arrive at the grund and find that he has forgotten his gear Old Camberwell Grammarians seem to be going up and down the ladder like a yo-yo, and after four losses they will be anxious to start the climb black at the expense of visitors Bulleen-Temptestowe, Although Bulleen are the form side in that they have beaten Old Brighton, they only just fell in against M H S O B last week I fancy the home side to cause an upset St Kevin's OB will be happy with their 32-point victory over Camberwell last week, and will be confident when they travel to Yarra Bend to meet Old Trinity Grammarians To be consistent I should jump on St Kevin's band-waggon but I cannot accept that Trinity are as bad as the scores over recent weeks indicate, and I am giving them another chance Both M H SO B and Old Haileyburians have won two games each The Haileybury victory over Coburg last week is probably the best Page 6 indicator of form, although they had the home ground advantage On the other hand, M HS kicked the game away against the B -T's at the B -T's ground I have now changed from my original selection and the nod goes to M H S at home Selections : Old Camberwell, Old Trinity M H S, Old Brighton, Hampton Rovers PETER NATHAN D SECTIO N Last Saturday's highlights were Beverley Hills' victory over Heatherton, and the narrow wins recorded by Alphington, Power House and St Bede's Alphington regained the top spot on the ladder by defeating Old Carey last week, and today they make the journey down to Mordialloc to try and retain that position against the in-form St Bede's O C This is going to be a very tight game, with the only apparent difference between the sides being the home ground advantage, which I think will be enough to give St Bede's their fifth consecutive win Beverley Hills gave Heatherton's final four hopes a jolt last week, and they are to be congratulated on their win after showing very indifferent form previously Their opponents today, Old Ivanhoe Grammarians, will not be taking any chances today, for they have won their last two games and are just out of the four on percentage Even though Beverley Hills will be very determined to record another win, I cannot see them doing so today State Bank's inaccuracy proved costly last week against St Bede's, but the previous week their kicking for goal was a major factor in their defeating Alphington Today they meet Heatherton, who last week lost their second away game to a side lower on the ladder, and they will be happy to be playing on their home ground in this vital game Despite this advantage, State Bank has shown the better form this year, and I think they will take out the four points Power House came home strongly last week to snatch a win from Country Colleges, and they have the chance to move up the ladder a couple of spots with a win over A M P Society today Though A M P's performances have been very disappointing this year, they showed signs of improvement in their game against Old Ivanhoe last week If they can pu t our quarters together they may trouble Power House today, but I cannot see them winning this game Old Carey Grammarians were only a kick away from victory against Alphington last week, and they pay Country Colleges a visit today, who suffered a similar fate against Power House Old Carey have recorded good wins this year due to their ability to produce a burst of goals, which gives them a matchwinning break in otherwise tight games Country Colleges, on the other hand, have been doing the opposite, but my spies tell me they are about to show their true form, so on their advice I will tip them to produce an upset win Selections: St Bede's OC, Old Ivanhoe Gr, State Bank, Power House, Country Colleges- WILLY PICKHAM THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - From time to time the question is asked : why not have one umpiring body in Victoria from which all competitions could draw their umpires? There are the attractions of economies of scale : central training facilities ; one coaching staff; greater flexibility in making appointments ; and centralised accounting systems Another advantage is perceived to be consistency in the interpretation of the rules of the game no matter where it is played in the State To some extent centralisation is with us at present The V AF A supplies umpires to the University of Melbourne's Inter-Collegiate Competition and to some school games In the past VAF A umpires have officiated in the Melbourne Mid-Week League The VFL and VF A umpires are appointed to country and outer-suburban games It is the purpose of today's Umpires' Corner to suggest that there are disadvantages in a centralised system which outweigh any of its benefits - certainly for the V AF A The first and most obvious problem would be that the V AF A would lose control over its umpiring standards It would have no control over appointments Innovations like the two-umpire system, umpire visits to all clubs and experimental uniforms would not be possible Interpretations of the rules which are designed to keep play open and fast would not be observed unless they were in accord with the central view V AFA administrative arrangements which necessitated action by umpires (eg completion of paper work, resolving conflicting scorecards) could not work smoothly when umpires were moving between different associations each week On another plane, the personal contact between players, officials and umpires would be lost Umpires would not be appointed to VA F A games often enough to become known to clubs This loss of contact would be felt on the field as any player who has been addressed by his Christian or "nick name" will testify On the other side of the coin, any VAF A umpiring body will only be viable if it can put the necessary 120 goal, field and boundary umpires into the field each week A constant injection of "new blood" Is essential There is no better place to find new umpires than among the ranks of players who are considering hanging up their boots They can maintain their association with the V AF A and contribute in a different role This continued association is assured if they join the VA F A's umpiring body "100 TO RALPH" Ralph McHenry of De La Salle OC plays his 100th game today against St Bernard's A courageous player who makes up for his lack of size with a"never-give-in" attitude He retired briefly last year, but returned to become an important member of the A Grade Premiership side He has bounced back fitter than ever this year, and we all hope he has many more games to come THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - MAY 17, 1980 Page 11
