Powder River Sportsman s Club Third Trimester 2018 P.O. Box 162 Baker City, Oregon 97814 Regular Meetings @ 7:00 P.M., First Tuesday of the Month at 2690 Broadway Clubhouse Improvements Started In recent years the clubhouse on Broadway has suffered from leaks through the tile roof during heavy rainstorms, resulting in wet carpeting and mold in the meeting room. This August our landlords began major roof upgrading with removal of the tile, solid sheeting and weather proofing which has been completed metal roofing to be installed soon. New floor covering will follow. Special thanks and appreciation to: 1. Casey from Triple C Ready Mix for helping remove old chip trailer that was no longer usable for storage and getting it to metal scrapper. Also for leveling pad and moving new conex for the Cowboy Action shooters storage. Next for the extensive dozer work behind the target lifters that now allows runoff to flow away from the equipment. Lastly for lifting and moving the storage conex at the 1000 yard target berm into it s proper place. 2. Oregon Trail Co-Op for repairs to the broken cables supporting the Range main gate and overhead sign. Wayne Bloom coordinated this project. 3. Wayne Bloom who brought his tractor to the range to perform repairs to berms and roads. 4. To Joe and Adam Brooks, Wayne Bloom and Berryman for painting the letters on the overhead range gate sign. Paint was donated by Wayne Bloom. 5. To Joe Brooks and Berryman for repairs to range main gate. 1911 U.S. Cavalry Match: August 26th: Dutch Brogomy 248-3x Ray Berryman 196-0x Doug Taylor 194-0x Match Winners of Recent Months First Annual Cowboy Regional Shoot a Success Violence at Virtue Flat, our club s first Regional Cowboy Action Shoot was held in mid July and gathered 35 shooters for 3 days of events. Most of the shooters came from out of the area and from adjoining states. The event netted about $250 for the club and should be more profitable next year due to fewer major expenses. Our last Cowboy Action Shoot will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8th at 8:30 am. Catastrophic Rain and Flood Mark YHEC National Heavy rains everyday made for a wet and muddy National Youth Hunter Education Challenge event in late July. A nearby river flooded for the first time in 45+ years with little warning and resulted in emergency evacuation of the NRA tent city that was the headquarters for the event near Mansfield, Pennsylvania. As a result, two of the eight events (Archery and Shotgun) had to be eliminated from final scores as many teams did not get a chance to shoot them over the week long event. Our Oregon teams suffered from this as they had done very well in both events. Although none of our local kids made state teams this year, they have friends who did. The Oregon Senior Team placed 2nd in Orienteering and 3rd in both.22 rifle and Muzzle-loader. They placed 7th overall while the Junior team placed 9th. Angela Francis-Slabaugh coached the Sr. Team while Kimberly Pieren coached the Jr. Team. Jasmine Adams, a YHEC alumnus of a few years past was an assistant coach to both teams. Angela says that the Oregon kids were the most helpful during the emergency situation and is very proud of them. Club Championship Match, October 21st, will be 32nd Year The Club Championship Match was first held in 1988. The upcoming shoot will be the 32nd Annual Match. The course of fire involves shooting with Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun and is detailed in Match Schedules. The course was patterned after suggestions made by Jack O Connor in a November, 1940 Outdoor Life article for turkey shoots. Winners of the championship have their name and score engraved on the trophy plaque on display in the Clubhouse. Registration will start at 1:00 PM, Sunday at the 200 yard range. All shooters must be club members or join when registering. Gate Lock GATE LOCK: The lock on the gate has been replaced- again. The best way to operate the lock is to: 1. Work the code number 2. Depress the shackle, then pull open 3. Leave the number visible, go through and close the gate 4. Press the lock back shut before spoiling the number, hold closed as you spoil the number. Beating on the lock will not make it work any better.

Membership Dues 2019 Remember to renew memberships for 2019. Memberships expire 12/31/2018. Range lock combination changes on 03/01/2019! Target Frames Target frames still being wrongly used to hang targets. Please fasten targets only to the plywood back boards, which are much easier to replace then the cross-members. Large pieces of cardboard from the target shed can be used to temporarily fix shot-up back boards. The Board of Directors would really appreciate it if the members would take their trash home and dispose of it. You had room to bring it to the range, you surely have room to take it out with you; i.e. McDonald s bags, cups, ammo boxes, etc. Targets left pinned to the backers eventually blow off and liter the range. There again - someone else has to clean it up and haul it off, as we do not want to start any fires in the cans now. Thank you for your help - and if you see litter at the range your help in cleaning it up when you see it means the ones who have to do it all the time will appreciate your efforts. Powder River Sportsmen s Club VIRTUE FLAT RANGE USE POLICIES The Club makes every attempt to maximize the amount of time that the range is available for general use while also scheduling enough events and private range reservations to support operation of the range. Be sure to check the calendars in the newsletter or online before planning a trip to the range. When no events or reservations are scheduled, time of arrival establishes range use priority. If shooters are at the range prior to your arrival, their activities determine which ranges are available for use. In many cases, a shooting activity on one range does not affect other range use. The 1000-yard Range prevents any other range use. This firing berm nearest to the entry gate is used for Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Silhouette Matches, Steel Silhouette Matches, 1000-yard Benchrest Shoots, an long-range High Power Rifle Matches. Before firing from this range, shooters must first check the entire range to be sure no one else is down-range at any location east of the 1000 yard berm. The 200-yard Range prevents use of the 1000-yard range. Most range use occurs here. Target holders are placed at 25, 50, 100 and 200 yards. This range is used for Standard High Power and Sporting Rifle Matches, Pistol Classes, and by most individuals wanting to test loads or sight rifles. Use of this range still allows for safe use of the 100-yard range. The Pistol Range prevents use of the 1000-yard range. This range is used for pistol shooting,.22 Silhouette Matches, Junior.22, YHEC, and Cowboy Action Shoots. Two benchrest and target placements out to 100 yards are available. Use of this range still allows for safe use of the 200-yard range. After range use, be sure to install the slide rails to keep cattle out of the shooting area. The Action Pistol Bays prevent use of the 1000-yard range, and may prevent use of the Pistol or 200-yard Rifle Ranges. Restrictions: 1. No matches will be scheduled simultaneously in the Pistol Bays and any other range location. 2. During Scheduled Matches on the Rifle Range or 100-yard Pistol Range, no firing is permitted in the Pistol Bays. 3. During Scheduled Matches at the Pistol Bays, no use of the Pistol Range is permitted, no firing is permitted on the Rifle Range, and no person may access Rifle Range locations east (downrange) of the 200- yard berm. 4. No firing is permitted in the pistol bays when persons are downrange of the 200 yards rifle benches. 5. When no matches are scheduled, individuals or groups who wish to use the Pistol Bays must direct all fire in an eastward direction at the back berm of the bay they are using. Do not fire in any other direction. The 180 are of fire is permitted only during scheduled Practical Shooting Matches. 6. When no matches are scheduled, simultaneous informal use of the Pistol Bays and Rifle Ranges is permitted under the following conditions: a. Fire in the Pistol Bays is directed in an eastward direction only. b. Rifle Range shooters must call for and receive a cease-fire in the Pistol Bays before engaging in any activity downrange from the 200-yard benches. 7. Do not fire rifles at plate racks in the Pistol Bays. All ranges: if you see someone checking fence or pushing cows on the hillside downrange of the target areas, STOP FIRING until that person has completely cleared the hillside. Report all acts of vandalism to the Sheriff s office as soon as discovered. PUT SAFETY FIRST AT ALL TIMES!
