The Ohio swing started a three-game road trip that concludes tonight at Auburn as the Eagles look to get back to.500 on the year. Defensively the Eagles have been strong since returning from a 10-day lay-off prior to the trip to Ohio, but Winthrop allowed just 57 points per game in two games and held Ohio State to its lowest point total of the season (65). In fact, Winthrop over its last three games is allowing just 56 points per game and opponents are shooting.363. The Eagles have defended the three-point line as opponents are shooting just 25 percent over the threegame span. Winthrop and Auburn are meeting for the fourth time as the Tigers have won all three meetings. This will be the third time the two teams meet around Christmas as the other meeting came in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 1999. Auburn was the fi rst team the Eagles ever played in the NCAA Tournament and lost 80-41 to the #1 seed and 4th-ranked team in the country. Sophomore Derrick Henry continues to be the leading scorer for the Eagles game in and game out as he ranks 6th in the Big South at 15.2 points per game. Henry had a teamhigh 12 points at Ohio State and also tied his career-best of four assists. He has doublefi gure scoring in eight of the nine games this year. Gideon Gamble (R-Sr.) and Andre Smith (So.) are each tied for second on the team in scoring at 9.0 points per game. Gamble is also averaging 3.3 rebounds and coming off a nine point performance against the Buckeyes. Smith, who was scoreless three games ago, has averaged 8.0 points in his last two games and is the top shooter behind the arc on the roster at 36 percent (16-for-45). Junior Joab Jerome seems to be fully recovered from his leg injury from early in the year and has begun to show leadership on the fl oor over the past five games. During the last fi ve games Jerome is averaging 9.4 points and 5.4 rebounds while shooting 62 percent from the floor. The Eagles face an Auburn team that is 5-5 on the year and winners of three straight after an 81-62 victory over Tennessee Tech on Tuesday. The Tigers are 4-2 at home with the last three wins coming in Auburn Arena. In the six home games, the Tigers are averaging 74.3 points per game while allowing 60.3 points. Junior Chris Denson and senior Frankie Sullivan lead the scoring for the Tigers. Denson missed the fi rst six games of the season and has averaged 16.7 points per game since returning on an impressive 63 percent shooting from the fl oor. Sullivan is tied for 5th in the SEC is scoring at 16.4 points and shooting 42 percent from the fi eld while knocking down 27 percent behind the arc (15-for-56). Sullivan is an 82 percent shooter at the foul line (37-for-45). He also has fi ve 20-point games this season. Auburn is one of the top three-point shooting teams in the SEC, draining 37 percent of their attempts. Freshman guard Jordan Price leads the team with 19 made and is shooting 56 percent while senior guard Noel Johnson has made 18. While the majority of the scoring comes from the guard position for the Tigers, senior center Rob Chubb is third on the team in scoring at 9.3 points per game and is also pulling down 7.6 rebounds. Chubb shoots 47 percent from the fl oor and is averaging 2.7 boards on the offensive end. He s been pretty consistent with six of 10 games in double-fi gures. To this point in the season the Eagles and Tigers don t have a common opponent. Brett Redden Asst. Media Relations Director reddenb@winthrop.edu (803) 323-2129, ext. 6246

EAGLE EYE VIEW OF THE TEAM WINTHROP AS A TEAM This will be just the fourth meeting between Auburn and Winthrop as the Tigers have won all three meetings, including the last meeting on Dec. 29, 2005 Auburn won the last meeting 64-62 on a last second tip-in by Korvotney Barber Winthrop is 2-23 against the current members of the Southeastern Conference (two wins came against Mississippi State and Georgia--both on the road) This will be the Eagles first game in the state of Alabama since 2006 when they won 56-43 at Birmingham-Southern (that year they played three games in Alabama beginning Dec. 3, 2005 at Alabama, Dec. 29, 2005 at Auburn and Feb. 25, 2006 at Birmingham-Southern) Winthrop s non-conference Division I opponents (6 teams) faced so far have a combined record of 38-20 Head Coach Pat Kelsey s post-game comments following the loss at Ohio State made national headlines and landed him on MSNBC s The Last Word With Lawrence O Donnell on Wednesday Night and Fox News Fox & Friends Thursday morning The clip from the presser was played on several radios stations across the country, stirring up conversation among callers and hosts on radio stations in Portland (OR), Knoxville (TN), Nashville (TN), Atlanta (GA), Charlotte (NC), St. Louis (MO), Philadelphia (PA) and WEEI, a New England regional sports radio show Winthrop held Ohio State to its lowest point total of the season on Tuesday as the Buckeyes were averaging nearly 80 points (78.9) entering the game The Eagles won the battle of the boards against Ohio State (ranked 22nd in rebound margin) with a 38-36 advantage despite the Buckeyes clear size advantage in the post Winthrop knocked down 10 three-pointers against Ohio State for the first time since making 10 against Marquette on Nov. 18, 2011 It was just the second time in the last 89 games that Winthrop hit 10 or more threes in a single game The win over Ohio was arguably the biggest non-conference victory for the Eagles since the 2007-08 season in a 76-70 victory over 19th-ranked Miami The Eagles win at Ohio gave them their fi rst non-conference road win since Dec. 15, 2011 at Jacksonville (W, 59-45) Eagles defensive scoring average of 60.7 ranks second in the Big South, second in defensive rebounding (33.1) and third in defensive field goal percentage (.414) and 4th in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.308) Winthrop won when trailing at the half for the fi rst time in 10 games after rallying at Ohio (trailed 25-20) Winthrop was just 3-16 in 2011-12 when trailing at the half The 35 points allowed to Lenoir-Rhyne are the fifth lowest point total Winthrop has held an opponent in the program s history Derrick Henry s 26 points are the most in a season-opener since Michael Jenkins had 40 against North Greenville on Nov. 10, 2006 Coach Pat Kelsey joined all fi ve previous head coaches at Winthrop who won in their debut (Nield Gordon, Won 91-81 at Wingate), (Steve Vacendak, Won 74-64 at UMES), (Dan Kenney, Won 92-84 vs. Queens), (Gregg Marshall, Won 71-50 vs. Clinch Valley), (Randy Peele, Won 68-61 vs. Queens) Winthrop is coming off back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since 1996-97/1997-98 Of all the returning players, not one had more than three games scoring in double-figures in 2011-12 (Joab Jerome had three) For the first time since 2009-10, Winthrop will not participate in a regular season tournament (just the 2nd time in last 12 seasons) Winthrop has just one freshman on the 2012-13 roster (walk-on Tevin Prescott) This is the first season since 2003-04 that Winthrop played three of its first four games at home Winthrop hasn t had a full season without an overtime game since 1996-97 Winthrop assistant coach Mark Prosser was the head coach of Brevard College in 2011-12 #2 Gideon
