November 2010 A NEWSLETTER FOR THE FORT WORTH TRAP & SKEET CLUB THE BULLSHOOTER www.fortworthtrapandskeet.com New Members Orientation If you are new to shooting and would like to get together with other new shooters to get some basic instruction, and shoot with other new shooters, and to find out a lot more information about our club and its activities, be sure to attend the New Member s Orientation scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December, 2010. Club Christmas Party December th is the annual club christmas party. There will be 3.00 rounds of trap and skeet all day and snacks for everyone. Come on down and show off your shooting and kick the holiday season off right! Email skeetchair@fortworthtrapandskeet. com for more information.

President s Message by Gene Ragle The newly-elected board has begun work on the business of FWTS and immediate attention must be given to condition of the houses and the grounds. The process of having the lead mined has been initiated and attention to some of the roofing over the skeet houses as well. Not to be forgotten is the ever present driveway problem and believe me, no one wants it fixed more than I!!! Sadly, I must report that during the annual meeting, one of our members mistakenly left an Apple ipad in the club house when the meeting was concluded. Being comfortable with our staff and membership, the member did not attempt to retrieve the ipad until the next day and, unfortunately, it had been stolen. I have always felt like this is a second home and I find it disturbing that someone s property would not be respected. If anyone has any information about this incident and would like to remain anonymous they may contact me. Fellow members, once again I ask that we respect each other and in turn this organization by conducting ourselves with integrity so that our club will remain an organization that is respected. Keep shooting, GR Houston We Have Liftoff!! The website for Fort Worth Trap and Skeet Club is active. On the website you will find all the photos that did not make it into the newsletter, league scores and standings, by-laws, guest policy...pretty much everything you would want to know about the Club. Take some time and visit us online at www.fortworthtrapandskeet.com; we would love to see you. It is an evolving concept, just like The Bull Shooter. There is a contact form on the website so if you have any suggestions or just want to say looks good, drop us a line and say hello.

Club Skeet Shoot What a beautiful morning for shooting! There was little to no wind; a bluebird sky and the temperature was just perfect. We had 1 shooters participate in the October monthly club skeet shoot. Our top shooters this month were: Allen Cline with a 50 (20 gauge), Richard McCarter with a (20 gauge), Mark Cutler with a ( gauge) and a 6 (10 gauge), Gordon Bain with a 6 (20 gauge), Tracy Ragle with a 6 (20 gauge), and Gene Ragle with a 5 (20 gauge). Nice shooting guys and girls! As you can see in the overall standings below, there are still several close races. These should go down to the wire. Next month s shoot is scheduled for Nov 1. We will be shooting and 28 gauges. Hope to see you there. 2010 Club Championship The Club Championship was a success! We had plenty of shooters all day long and good food cooked by Pete Fowler. There was some stiff competition for the awards. Thanks to everyone who came out and shot as well as attending the Annual Business Meeting. Rob Wilson took home High All Around Honors. David Weeks was skeet High Over All champion, was the gauge champion and Allen Cline demolished the 10 bore competition. Rich Hatler was High Over All for Trap and Trap Doubles. Johnny Burns was the Handicap Trap Champion. Vickie Jennings was High Lady Trap, Tracy Ragle was High Lady Skeet, and Jamie Becker was High All Around Lady Don t foget you can view all of the pictures from the 2010 Club Championship at www.fortworthtrapandskeet.com

You WERE Tough Enough to Wear PINK! The month of October saw pink being sported on fire trucks, fireman, NFL players and on professional cowboys; but who would have put pink targets on the skeet field? Tracy Ragle did during the Tough Enough to Wear Pink shoot on October 9th. If you have attended the monthly Club shoot for October, you would have been given the opportunity to enter Fort Worth Trap and Skeet Club s first ever fundraiser to support breast cancer research. A pink shirt and $10.00 per event would have gotten you entered in the 20g and 10 bore with a Lewis class purse at stake. The winnings were to be split 60/0 with Susan G Koman Foundation but in true Fort Worth Trap and Skeet Club style all the winners donated 100% of the purse to the cause making the total donation $280!! What about the pink targets? If a shooter was lucky enough to hit a random pink target they were eligible for a door prize. The door prizes ranged from shopping bags to a Red Card and were donated to help the cause. Special thanks to Mark Cutler for acting as banker, Allen Cline for council and Jamie Becker for the donations to the door prize cache. Thank you also to all the shooters who looked so handsome in pink! The support was uplifting!

Newcomer s Corner By Wayne Cook Last month, we got into the various purses offered at registered skeet shoots. This month, we ll finish talking about registered skeet shoot competitions. Concurrents this is another classification NSSA uses, and is based on a shooter s status and age as of November 1st of any given year. You ll see designations like Senior (age 60+), Sub-Senior (50-59), Sub-Sub-Senior (0-9), Lady, Veteran (age 0-9), Military, and so forth. You can find a complete listing of these in the NSSA rule book. Many shoots offer prize money for concurrent winners as well as for the regular shoot placements based on class. Example: If you re 50-59 as of November 1st, you re classified sub-senior, and compete against other sub-seniors for any concurrent purses offered. NSSA Classification - Each time you shoot in an NSSA-registered event, your scores are sent in, and your average adjusted. Until you have 5 scores, you will shoot as N/C (not classified), in the class based on what your average is for up to previous shoots. After 5 shoots, you become a classified shooter and are assigned a Class based on your average. Each shoot after that, your newest score will be added and your oldest score dropped to figure your new current average and class. See Section V-A-10 in the NSSA Rule book. A great way to get started shooting competitively is to first take some lessons to learn the fundamentals you need to incorporate into your shooting, and maybe buy and study one or more of the great instructional DVD s on the market. Then 1) practice until you feel comfortable with your gun, 2) feel like your technique is becoming consistent and you don t have to think about technique on every shot, and 3) when your scores become consistent or are climbing gradually. Personally, I d recommend shooting in leagues and the monthly club shoots to get used to the feel of shooting in a competitive environment. Both of these events are pretty laid back, relaxed venues, and can be a lot of fun while honing your skills more relaxed maybe than the official registered events. You ll be surprised how the more you shoot competitively, the more your game and focus will improve. You ll see where you need to work, whether on technique in general or on specific shots or stations. Before you know it, you ll be stringing 10 and and 20-straight hits together, and a 25 may even magically appear out of nowhere. Shooting at the events at FWTS is a great way to start, as you ll be shooting with people you know and in a familiar environment. So far, I ve mainly covered skeet shooting. I ll begin discussing trap shooting next month. While there are some similarities primarily that you re shooting a shotgun, 25 shots/round, etc., the two games are completely different in technique. From the mail bag I received an email from a member fairly new to shotgunning and the club, who was interested in shooting with others of similar experience level and maybe having an orientation class. We ve all been there, and sometimes it can be a bit intimidating to always have to practice with guys who ve been shooting for years and who shoot well. If interested in getting together with other new shooters in a very informal environment, get to know each other and break a few clays, send me an email. I ll be there to answer questions, and help as needed. Should be fun. If you have specific questions you d like to see addressed, feel free to email them to me at ourteam001@netzero.com. We can incorporate them into this section, or I can respond directly to your questions or concerns via email. So here s to breaking birds the FWTS way. Til next time, Wayne
