River City News May, 2015 MEETING TIME & PLACE 2ND Monday 7:00 PM* Golden Corral Zumbehl Rd St. Charles, MO MISSIOURI DISTRICT - REGION E Team Riding Seminar 2015
From the Front Seat We had a very good dinner ride this month. It was an eye opener for me. We went to Ferguson Brew house, just a very nice establishment. We had a big turn out and a great time with those that attended. I had never been to Ferguson, and from what the media has portrayed, I wasn't sure what to expect. It was very nice, with the small shops and restaurants. It reminded me of old town Kirkwood. It just goes to show the media only portrays one side of the story. Thank you Bob and Marty for putting on the Team Riding seminar. It is just one way for all of us to learn the same way. This way we can all enjoy the summer safely riding across this country together. We had some new guests this month at the meeting. Welcome Levi and Emma, I hope we didn't scare you off. The staff is always trying to come up with ideas for us to do. So check your emails and check the website for any updates. John, Bob and Marty are doing a great job getting the information out. I don't know what I would do without everyone's help. Thanks On the 9th we are having a ride in the morning. We will be riding to Columbia for lunch to support Chapter W at their Bike Show. We will meet at Moto Mart on Elm and 370. Kick stands up at 9:00 AM. On the 10th of May before our meeting, Marty is hosting an Experienced Riding Course at Forest Park. Contact Marty Hall or myself to see if any spots are still available. We are having a fund raiser at Texas Roadhouse on the 14th check the emails, and newsletter for coupons and more information. Some of the big events coming are Niehaus Days, MO District Rally at Branson, a drive in movie, the Birthday Bash and Hellbender ride. This is just a few, check the calendar for dates and times. See you on the 11th at Golden Corral for our meeting. Ride Safe and Enjoy Life Jerry Rothermich chapter W-2 Director

WARM WEATHER CONCERNS AND PREPARATION As avid motorcyclists, our riding season is comprised of summer, with some spring and fall periods. Each individual needs to ride when they are most comfortable, but there will be periods when you will be riding in the heat. Heat can cause severe medical emergencies for some, thus it is important to know how to avoid becoming a victim and how to care for someone should the need arise. Below you ll find some warm weather riding tips that will hopefully help you be more prepared. Riding with the appropriate gear should be thought through before heading out. Think about what you ll wear on your arms in the direct sunlight. A good choice is a mesh jacket. It provides sun protection, abrasion resistance, and ventilation. Another choice would be a long sleeved denim shirt, which offers better protection than a simple t-shirt. Whatever you choose, being comfortable keeps your mind focused on your riding, not the heat. Long denim pants are a common choice, or you may choose riding specific pants. Perforated leather gloves will breathe and be cooler, where mesh gloves, like your jacket material, provide great ventilation and abrasion protection for your hands. Consider carrying a water absorbing collar on your bike that you can soak in water and wear around your neck to keep you cool. Another choice that works well is the Frogg Togg Cooling Chilly Pad towel. An option that Jan and I have used in extreme heat is to soak your mesh jacket down with a water hose or faucet available at gas stations, and you can do the same thing with your shirt or t-shirt. Maintaining your hydration level is so importance when riding in the heat. Drink water every time you stop for gas, rest breaks, and by all means carry water on your bike so you can drink whenever needed. You need to constantly replace the water your body is losing through perspiration. If you re drinking a lot and not peeing, you might be moving into dehydration. A good phrase a friend of our taught us about riding in the heat is, water in-water out. You must all pay attention to your own physical condition. Exposure to too much heat for too long can result in hypothermia. This is when your body can no longer properly regulate your internal temperature and this is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention! Watch for signs like, not sweating, confusion, headache, dizziness, redness of the skin, generally noticeable on the face. If you notice any of these signs in yourself or others find the nearest stop, sit down preferably in the shade or in air conditioning, drink lots of water, and relax! Remove gear and loosen clothing so your body can cool itself. And remember that it is imperative that you increase the frequency of breaks during the hottest part of the day. With the correct gear and travel plans that include frequent breaks with plenty of water, most of us can enjoy riding safely even in the hottest weather. Ride Smart and Stay Safe!
