Shipston Cycling Club Newsletter Welcome to the latest edition of Shipston Cycling Club newsletter. After the rough start to March, last weekend saw the beautiful weather return even though there was an early frost which gave a little chill in the air. It looks like the weather forecast is for a more settled period through to the end of March at least. Please feel free to send me articles at any time for the next newsletter. I am not including a weather forecast as things change so quickly this time of year. Please send your reports and items to share to me by Tuesday evening if possible. PS If have club ride or sportive photos which can be incorporated within the newsletter please send them in PDF format Last Week s Ride 9.15 group 24th March 2019: On what must have been the finest weather for a Sunday cycle this year, a total of seven riders enjoyed our lovely countryside for the 39 mile route. A 'short group' of two riders cut off at Moreton. The route was noticeably hilly but no less enjoyable for that. Coffee at the Cotswold Farm Store was welcome as usual and with it time for a leisurely catch-up chat. Thank you team for another very enjoyable Sunday ride. Cycle safely everyone. Pauline' Thanks Duncan 9.30 Group -The second group started out at 9:30 with just three riders as a few regulars were either away on holiday, taking part in sportives, injured or away for 1
the weekend. On a beautiful spring morning with light winds we soon caught up with the first Group and carried on to the coffee stop. The first Group arrived at the coffee shop just as we had finished eating our cake so we're able to give over our table as the cafe was pretty full. None of us completed the full route back to Shipston electing to turn off and head home. NEW GROUP RIDES : Is anyone available to ride the Sunday Short Route this week? For details of all up and coming rides see http://shipstoncycling.com Andy Smith Shipston CC Saturday morning club ride Alex will lead a ride on Saturday mornings that will be in two parts. Part one will be a steady 10 to 15 mile ride at a pace to suit those getting back into cycling following a winter break. Part two will be interval training to start with. Typically a two to three minute sprint followed by a gentle one to two minute recovery session and then repeated for up to 10 intervals. Meet at the Leisure Centre at 0930. I will put a message out on Whatsapp the day before to provide details of the 10-15 mile route. If there is anyone that just wants to do part two, then let me know and I will arrange a suitable meeting time and place. There will be no ride organised by Alex this week, but intends to hold one the week after and fortnightly thereafter. Keep an eye out for updates on Whatsapp. Alex Updates will be provided each week that Alex plans to run this in the Newsletter and on Whatsapp. If you plan to ride, please let Alex know so that he is aware that you will there. Any questions? Contact Alex on alex@macr.ae 2
Annual Membership Period Update Further to the results of the Annual Membership Period, the committee has decided to revise the transitional fees payable between April 2019 and September 2019. Instead of a flat 10 fee for non-concessions, the transitional fee will decrease by one pound increments every month, starting at 10 and finishing at 5. This tiered arrangement gives a close approximation to the pro-rata cost for the remaining months until new renewals are paid in January 2020. Any one renewing or joining in the last three months of 2019 will have the next period included in their 15 membership fee 5 for concessions). Forthcoming club rides can be seen on the club website www.shipstoncycling.com 3
Kit Korner News With the clocks changing this weekend, we re about to officially enter the cycling summer season where, hopefully, we can put our long sleeved Winter and Spring jerseys away for a few months and don our short sleeved jerseys again! In terms of those potentially wanting to purchase a short sleeved jersey, we ve had some new riders join us over the last few months and there could also be a few longer term members who may want to wear the famous SCC colours on our summer season rides! With this in mind, the committee have kindly confirmed that not only will the club funded 20% kit purchase contribution continue (making 30% in total; this due to our extra volume based 10% discount from suppliers Owayo) for the purchase of these jerseys, but that they are also prepared on this occasion to fund, if necessary, any small order supplements that may be applicable. There are 2 choices available - a premium men s/women s fitted garment or a standard unisex option - and, if you are interested in potentially purchasing a jersey, you should let our kit coordinator (garygristwood54@outlook.com) know by the end of this month so that he can inform you about the availability of sizing samples for you to try on and to give you specific pricing details. Finally, if anyone is also interested in purchasing club bibshorts, you should let Gary know and there could be a club funded discount applicable, although this will depend on the uptake for the jersey promotion. Cheers, Gary. 4
Notes from Informal meeting at White Bear Club Open Day. To hopefully attract new members, there will be a Club Open Day on Sat 18 May held from 1000-1400 in the rear car park and Back bar of the White Bear pub in Shipston. This will give an opportunity for those interested to meet and chat with Club members, have a go on Turbo-trainer and participate in basic bike maintenance classes. Peloton discipline When riding on roads with double white lines, to make it easier for following cars to overtake, the peloton should split into groups of 4 cyclists, riding 2 abreast with a gap of at least 150m in between each group. So, if you are No 5 & 6 in the peloton then you and the 2 riders behind you should fall back to leave a gap to enable cars to overtake quickly and slot in before overtaking the next group, and so on. Once it is deemed safe to join up once again into a peloton, the group of four front riders should slow the pace to allow that transition without undue stress. The following riders call "all on" when appropriate. Hopefully, your ride leader will remind you of this at the start of our club rides when numbers of cyclists are known. With a good knowledge of the route ahead the above discipline plan should be discussed at the outset, this will avoid confusion at the time. Overall, communication is key. WhatsApp group If you would like to join the WhatsApp group so that you can keep up to date with any last minute changes to a Sunday ride or want to see if anyone would like to join you on a ride, then text Alex your mobile number with your name and he will add you.
