Of course the winners had even more fun.. Congratulations to all of them (more on this elsewhere in this edition). A special vote of thanks goes to Pam Maloney, ably assisted by Judy Stillman and Shari Gonzalez to ensure that the league and the tournament ran so smoothly from beginning to end the hard work and effort is appreciated by all of us. Thank you to Bob Walgren who directed the tournament and ensured that it ran in a most professional manner. A word also on the food as usual our gourmet chefs, Al Johns and Bill Clayton, did a wonderful job keeping us well (over) fed and well treated at the barbecue...thank you!!! As you know the next big day is the Calcutta Tournament, set for May 7. Some word of clarification on this tournament will not be out of place. It goes like this the Heather courts will be closed or partially closed for resurfacing at the time of the tournament. After much discussion and head scratching your Board decided that the tournament should not be postponed, mainly because of the lack of sufficient gaps in an already full calendar, and also that such a FUN tournament should not be moved from its traditional place in our calendar. Accordingly we approached Michael Wayman, tennis director, at St. Mary s College, and he very kindly offered to make sufficient courts available to us to enable us to run the entire tournament at St. Mary s, including barbecuing and the availability of our usual libations. We are very confident that with your help and cooperation Calcutta will be as good as it always is. Not too worry next year Calcutta will be back where it belongs at Heather. Please do not hesitate to contact Jennifer Scriabine or myself, if you have any question regarding Calcutta. See y all on the courts soon Gabe Goldstein Gabe Goldstein 2005 WCRC President 2 The Court Reporter May 2005

Every year the WCRC hosts an annual banquet in January and donates the proceeds to a local tennis program. The tennis program is awarded a voucher of $500 and may use the voucher according to the needs of the program. This year Riverview Middle School became the proud recipients of WCRC's annual award. They chose a ball machine to fill their needs. In their tennis program students learn about rules, scoring, grips, strokes, court awareness, etiquette, and appreciation for the game of tennis. All students must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better to participate in the Tennis program. Box 4574 Walnut Creek, CA 94596 www.wcrc.net PRESORTED STANDARD U.S. POSTAGE P A I D Walnut Creek, CA Permit No. 432 Get to Know Ryan Morimune W ell the good looking guy in the WCRC clubhouse on Saturdays is Ryan Morimune. He has been assigning courts and working the desk for four years...since his sophomore year in high school. Ryan also knows a thing or two about tennis. Did you know that Ryan played tennis for Clayton Valley high school and now for Diablo Valley College? You will also see him in the coming months helping run the kids clinics at WCRC. After DVC he hopes to transfer to a four year college and major in business administration. Please stop by and say hello to Ryan. He s also a sports fanatic you might say. Ask him anything about the 49ers. I doubt you will be able to stump him.
