It does still signal the start of a new year in DKG, however, and I look forward to having you as an active part. Thanks to Nivia and her board for their leadership the last two years. The 2018-2020 Executive Board had an engaging and energetic meeting this summer. We look forward to introducing new events to meet our biennium goals of socializing and networking together, while giving back to our community and fellow educators through our programs and projects. Members can access the DKG News at www.dkg.org by signing in with the member ID as username. The default password is still dkg2014society unless the member has already signed in previously and changed to a preferred password. This change is effective immediately. International Convention Voting Report from Xi State President Elaine Alexander Congratulations to Becky Sadowski (Alpha Lambda) elected International First Vice President and to Elaine Warwick (Rho) elected Southeast Regional Director at the 2018 International Convention in Austin, Texas, last month! Members also voted on over 120 proposed amendments to the Constitution and International Standing Rules. Below are a few highlights you may share with your chapter members: 1. Name change not adopted and remains the same. We are still The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, also referred to as The Society or DKG. 2. Membership remains by invitation; however, initiation was changed to induction for a more professional sound. 3. A new level of membership, Collegiate, will be open to preservice education students; however, they may not hold a chapter office. 4. The Golden Gift Committee remains its own committee. 5. International Committees will continue to have representatives from all regions instead of by proportionate representation. 6. Voting for International officers will remain as it is. 7. The DKG Constitution can now be amended every two years. 8. Member dues and the fiscal year will be aligned with time to inform and educate treasurers. During the 2018-2019 fiscal year dues will continue to be due by October 31, 2018, with members being dropped for non-payment as of November 1, 2018. For the 2019-2020 fiscal year and following, dues must be paid by June 30 (beginning in 2019). Non-paid members will be dropped as of October 1, 2019. Lucille Cornetet and Educational Foundation Award Applications Are you searching for funds to participate in a professional development activity, seminar, or project that would benefit you, your students, and your community? Consider applying for the Lucille Cornetet Individual (due September 1, 2018) or Seminar (due November 1, 2018) Professional Development Awards or the DKG Educational Foundation Project Award (due January 3, 2019). Seven Beta Epsilon members attended the Xi State Convention this summer at the University of the South in Sewanee. What a wonderful time we had! Congratulations to Ashley Witt for receiving the Liz Whorley Bradley Professional Development Award, and Sandra Pineault who was recognized as a Visionary for donating $1000 to the Xi State Vision Foundation for scholarships! Sandra currently serves as Chair of the Vision Foundation Board of Directors. If you have not attended, considering joining us next year May 30-June 1. It will be an eventful year for Beta Epsilon as our own Elaine Alexander completes her biennium as the Xi State President. See pictures of the 2018 Xi State Convention below. She also helped chaperone a 10-day trip with a student group to Italy and Greece (including Rome, Florence, Bologna, Ancona, the Meteora region of Greece, Delphi, and Athens). Elaine Alexander represented Beta Epsilon and Xi State at the DKG International Convention in Austin, TX. Joan Howell spent 3-weeks touring five countries in Europe including England, France, The Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. It was both educational and fun! Sandra Pineault visited Prince Edward Island in Canada with extended family. The trip included a stop in Boston to see her 4-year-old twin grandsons! Debby James retired from teaching this past May. Congrats, Debby enjoy! Send best wishes to Rita King as she recovers from knee replacement surgery. She is currently in rehab at Adam s Place, but is expecting to go home soon.
Volunteer Opportunities Wine Around the Square Saturday, Sep. 15th, 6pm-9pm Murfreesboro, TN The Power of Pink Program was begun thirteen years ago to provide financial support for the Saint Thomas Rutherford Foundation and Saint Thomas Health "Our Mission in Motion" mobile mammography, mammograms for indigent women in Rutherford County, and breast cancer education and information. In 2012 the event grew into Wine Around the Square in downtown Murfreesboro. Join Beta Epsilon members as we celebrate our 3 rd year as volunteers for this worthy event! For those interested in volunteering, please email Nivia your contact information (name, phone number, email) and 1st and 2nd job preferences (set up, check-in, wine pourer, clean up) at serranon@rcschools.net, or let her know at the September 10 th meeting.
