OCTOBER NEWSLETTER Volume #11 Issue # 10 SCHEDULED MEETING WILL BE 9:00 A.M. Oct. 08, 2011 www.goldcoastbonsai.com City of Sunrise Parks & Leisure Dept 6800 Sunset Strip, Sunrise, FL 954-572-2287 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Someone once told me there are four seasons in South Florida, early summer, summer, late summer and next summer (which is actually that two weeks of winter we get in January!)...so I guess we are coming up on late summer and we are still experiencing those dog days of summer. I am hopeful we'll get some "work outside weather" before early summer sets in!! I have noticed that I tend to speak about the weather a lot in these messages, and then I realized that in Bonsai, it's not just small talk, it is in fact a very significant factor in our common endeavor. I mean we all have to consider the weather when planning our daily tree care. How much water how often is a daily exercise. When there are the daily monsoons like we have been experiencing these last several weeks, we can pull back on watering. This can be tricky though, because you do not PRESIDENTS MESSAGE CONTINUED want to pull back on feeding your trees. One thing to be careful of, underestimating the rain, you don't want to mistake a short heavy rain as being enough rain to have watered your trees. Depending on the density of the canopy, you would be surprised just how much water doesn't get

into your pots. Of course living here in a tropical climate we all have our little micro climates and adjust accordingly. I live east and I find in the summer I am generally a good 5 to 10 degrees cooler than out west. And during those two weeks of winter, during next summer, I am usually 5 to 10 degrees warmer. So that works out well for me because I do not have to bundle up my trees, and my Buttonwoods have little to no leaf burn. Well, we had a great program last month with a great turnout. As usual Toby did not disappoint us turning out a beautiful exposed root Elm. Mike Kaufman was the lucky raffle winner of that tree and we look forward to seeing it potted up and having Mike bring the tree back to share its future with us. This month's program also promises to be exciting and something a little different. Ed will tell you all about it in his article. Details for the BSF convention next Memorial Day are being firmed up as I write this and registration forms will be available shortly. I will be sure to let you all know a soon as they become available. In the mean time mark your calendars for Memorial Day Weekend 2012. The month of October also brings the Bonsai Society of Miami's Annual Bonsai show, October 15th and 16th, at their NEW LOCATION at Pine Crest Gardens in Miami. This is a great opportunity to stock up on some bonsai supplies, maybe purchase a new tree or two, and see some great demonstrations. I hope you all will get a chance to go one of the two days, if not both, and I look forward to seeing you there. Ben Liss OCTOBER PROGRAM By: ED TROUT This month's program is going to be fun for any of you that want a good photo of one or two of your trees. I am going to bring my complete photo set up, including background, lighting, cameras, and table. I will also bring my computer and provide you with a photo CD. This is what you need to do ; Have your tree ready to photograph. Pot should be clean, soil should be free of weeds, and mossed, if possible. Bring your favorite stand. I will have a couple available if you don't have one. If you want accent plants, please bring one. Bring tools & wire just in case you need to do any fine tuning. My background is large ( 10 ft x 8 ft ), so large trees are welcome. Please try to have the tree as dry as possible, so we don't soak the table cover.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide you with a good enough photo that you might consider entering into the ABS John Naka Award contest, and also the upcoming EPCOT display that BSF is again sponsoring. I will have applications for the Naka contest to hand out at the meeting. SEPTEMBER PHOTOS By: Larry Duke and Bob Yarling Just as a reminder, we will have 2 meetings in November. The first meeting on the evening of Nov 4 th, features a workshop with the BSF sponsored artist, Dan Robinson, and the we will have our regular scheduled meeting on November 12th. More details at our October meeting. Ed MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Wigert's Bonsai Annual Open House Event Nov 12-13 www.wigertsbonsai.com 239-543-223

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS Dear Members of Bonsai Societies of Florida: The great American Bonsai Master, John Naka is known throughout the entire world as a wonderful teacher and a true ambassador for bonsai. Did you know that John was also thev FIRST bonsai artist to tour Florida over 40 years ago as a BSFsponsored speaker? John came to Florida quite often, leaving those he taught yearning for more and better appreciating the Art of Bonsai. He was a very important catalyst that propelled us to where we are today. We owe him much! The American Bonsai Society has created a contest to honor John, and demonstrate how much his influence shows in our own trees. The John Naka Award is given every year to an artist who displays the influence of John s teachings in the tree they have created, a requirement requested by Alice Naka, John s wife. It is a very prestigious award! I know that there are many, many bonsai trees in the State of Florida, created per the requirements of this contest, by artists who meet the criteria requested by the Naka family. And because John had such roots in the advancement of bonsai in Florida, I firmly believe that we should have a significant representation of work submitted for this Award. Therefore, I would request that each Bonsai Club in BSF consider selecting a tree from its membership to submit to this contest. The details on submission, and requirements are found next or also available on the ABS website at www.absbonsai.org. If there is any way I can help in this project, or you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me at ficus@aol.com I would really like to see Florida Bonsai well represented at the 2012 John Naka Award Ceremony in Denver. Sincerely yours, Ed Trout
