Please eview the contents of this handbook caefully as it contains valuab infomation petaining to this yea s ide. Fo ide updates, check ou websi at C2LJ.og. The details about the ide contained in this handbook a confimed at this time, but ae subject to change. The 2017 oute is a ve scenic tou of Noth Caolina with flatlands, olling hills and mountains. This ide is also unique in that it is a multiday 150-mile ide fom the east to th west that will involve a climb up and acoss the Easten Continental Divid The fist day is a modeate difficulty ide fom Hickoy south-west though th Piedmont with olling hills to Casa, NC. The second day has seveal modea and steady climbs with a final (optional) majo climb up the amazing scen bicycle geenway fom Old Fot to Ridgecest. The final day will take us fo Black Mountain to Lake Junaluska fo ou closing celebation. Ride each day in segments fom est stop to est stop and enjoy the joune Rides ae always concened about thei ability to ide up the hills, but it s eas to walk you bike up a hill if needed. It is the downhill potions that equie lo of focus. PLEASE make sue you know how to descend safely down hills an make sue you bike s bakes have been popely inspected by you local bik shop pio to the event. 2

Cycle to Lake Junaluska needs you help to accomplish ou goal of having a safe and meaningful event. Thee may be inexpeienced cyclists on the oad duing the week. Don t assume othe cyclists know what you next move will be. Communicate in a goup of ides by indicating on you left, stopping, etc. to avoid bike-on-bike collisions. Most collisions duing events like this occu as a esult of bike-on-bike contact. It is a equiement that you wea an ASTM, ANSI o Snell helmet at all times when biking on the oute. Tempeatues duing the week will pobably be hot, so stat ealy, keep hydated, and take advantage of ests stops to keep fueled up and fesh. We encouage you to exploe the inteesting sites along the oute, stop fo lunch in one of the pass-though communities o just get off you bike and enjoy the scenic beauty. Ou goal is to host a safe ide that is a memoable expeience fo you and will help a geat cause each yea. This yea all poceeds aised will suppot the Campus Ministies of the Westen NC Confeence (Wesley Foundations, etc. Lean moe at http://www.wnccumc.og/ ministies/campus-ministies) These campus ministies of the United Methodist Chuch povide a faith based home away fom home fo students faced with the challenges of collegiate life. We encouage you to invite fiends to sponso you on the ide. We welcome you suggestions and comments about the ide. It is difficult to emembe suggestions given duing the ide, so please make sue you povide you suggestions on you post-ide evaluation suvey. Please contact us if you have any questions o concens pio to the ide. Thanks again fo you paticipation. We look fowad to seeing you at the 2017 Cycle to Lake Junaluska ide! God bless you and cycle safe! Doug Doug Mille, Chaipeson (Special thanks to Cycle Noth Caolina fo allowing us to utilize thei handbook fo the ceation of this esouce. Find out moe about CNC and thei annual ides acoss NC at http://cnc.ncspots.og.) 3 Pepaing fo the Ride Getting You Bike Ready Get you bike tuned up and adjusted to fit you befoe beginning to tain. Efficient position and good body alignment will help you feel moe comfotable. Have a pofessional bike technician check you position, including the points between you body and the bike: seat, shoes, pedals and hands. Poo fit is moe painfu than poo taining. To have you bike pofessionally fit, contact a bicycle shop in you aea. Schedule a pe-ide tune up with you local bike shop a week o two befoe you leave on the ide. Make sue to have them chec the condition and adjustment of bake pads, bake cables and gea cables as well as beaing adjustments in you hubs, headset and bottom backet. Ties should be checked fo excessive wea, cuts and nicks. Remembe, old ties (othe than the aged and cued ones that the Pos Ride) not only mean moe punctues; they may also be unsafe. If you ae in the Winston-Salem aea, contact Ken s Bike Shop. You can stop by anytime fo a fee look-ove o diagnostic check. Sometimes, the tained eye of the pofessional mechanic catches the othewise unnoticed poblem. Getting You Body Ready Below is some valuable infomation that, if followed, will keep you on you bike and out of the SAG. Fuel Wate is impotant befoe, duing and afte evey wokout. Whe cycling, be sue to dink at least one wate bottle pe hou. Dink even if you ae not thisty emembe, if you ae thisty, then you ae aleady dehydated! Once you ve finished you ide, make sue you continue to dink wate o spots electolyte and 4

ecovey dinks. As much as one would like to ague, the beveage gaden is not fo eplenishing electolytes...maybe cabohydates! Speaking of cabohydates, this is one aea that you do not need to skip out on duing the ide. You food plan duing taining should be compised of mostly cabohydates (55 65%), with the emainde in equal amounts of potein and fat. You e taining had and buning fuel faste than when you ae sitting on the couch changing channels. You need immediate and stoed fuel; which is pimaily supplied by a diet high in cabohydates. Stength Taining Stength Taining has been consideed a vital piece in any execise egimen, whethe eceation o competition. It is one of the most impotant aeas to focus on. In ode to be stong in the saddle, you need to have stength not only in you legs and heat, but in the est of you body. A stong coe is essential to good iding postue and climbing ability. Ty including at least two days a week of a full- body stength taining pogam tageting you majo muscle goups, with an emphasis on abdominal and back muscles and see if it makes a diffeence. Stetching Do we have to eally explain why this is so impotant? Stetching is essential to injuy pevention and impoving muscle ecovey. Focus on all majo muscle goups, not just the legs. Stetch afte evey wokout, bike ide, and even if you didn t do anything that day. Hee Ae Some Tips If You Have Knee Poblems Conside installing a tiple-ing cank set, using floating pedals o having you cleats fit-checked. Standing when climbing hills is toughe cadiovasculaly, but easie on the knees. Whethe you e iding C2LJ, getting youself and especially you body eady fo the ide is eally the key to making it an 5 enjoy-able expeience. Putting in plenty of miles of taining is definitely impotant, especially back-to-back days. Howeve, don t focus solely on mileage. A well-ounded taining pogam includes stength, flexibility, enduance, nutition, hydation and est. Cycle to Lake Junaluska should not be you taining, but a culmination of you taining effot. A majo cause of injuies is lack of conditioning. Located on the Cycle to NC website (an annual week-long ide fom the NC mountains to the coast) is a 8-week taining plan geaed just fo multi-day events. Whethe you choose to follow it completely o use it as a template fo you taining is up to you. Eithe way, you will see the benefits duing the ide if you just take the time to tain popely. Cycling One must emembe that C2LJ is a leisuely ide and NOT a ace. You will get the most enjoyment out of it if you have taine fo the ide. Plan on iding at least 400 600 taining miles as you get eady fo C2LJ. The oute can be challenging at times, especially duing the olling hills leading up to the mountains an the ide up to the Easten Continental Divide, so the moe miles you put into taining, the moe you will be able to enjoy the event. Remembe to wok on you climbing by doing hills and olles. At fist, choose shote hills and epeat them, then build up to longe hills with no est. If possible, ide with othe cyclists to get pepaed fo the days when you ll be iding with you new best fiends. Rest Adequate est will allow you body to ecove and epai itself moe efficiently. Too often, we tain too much while not allowing ou body and mind to ecove, which can lead to inteupted sleep pattens, injuy, deceased pefomance and bunout. C2LJ is NOT the place to expeience these symptoms. Take at least one day a week off fom taining. If you MUST do something, do something diffeent! Begin tapeing you taining one to two weeks pio to C2LJ. Continue you eating and 6

flexibility pogams, and decease you time in the saddle. Go out fo an easy neighbohood ide and elax. You have aleady done the wok; now get eady to eap the ewads! The gea bags that you bing to stoe you belongings should be 1.) soft suitcase o duffle bag (no had cases), 2.) made of a study mateial that will hold up to the day to day handling duing the week and 3.) easily distinguish-able. This is not the ide to bing you nice Samsonite o Swiss luggage. Bing a bag that you don t mind getting dity, tossed aound and possibly wet. Campes, both indoo and outdoo, may bing two bags each weighing no moe than 40 lbs each. If you bag is ove packed, you will be asked to emove some items to meet the weight equiements. The moe efficiently you pack, the easie it will be fo YOU and ou luggage loades to cay you bags daily. Some of the campsites will equie you to cay you luggage some distance fom the tuck to you campsite. To ensue that you clothing stays dy, pack clothes in lage plastic bags (Ziploc bags wok geat), pess flat to emove the excess ai and then seal. You will want to mak you bag in some manne (bight coloed ibbon o tape) to help distinguish it fom the othe 100 plus bags out thee. Keep in mind that most bags ae eithe black o blue. Please, do not bing bags with shap edges o staps with buckles on the outside. We cannot affod to lose one of ou luggage handles due to an injuy while loading and unloading you bag.
