Winning in Aachen June 2006 Chef de Mission Report Selection Geoff Sinclair Final selection events are in full swing as many competitors try to impress the selectors so they can be part of the Aachen 2006 team. Before any horse or rider can be officially selected they must have signed the following: EFA Horse Agreement EFA Competitor Agreement Both documents are available for download from the EFA National website www.equestrian.org.au The EFA High Performance fund receives its money from the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Olympic Committee. Along with the Endurance, Carriage Driving and Vaulting fraternities, we are investing well over $1 million in this campaign and there are important obligations that horse owners and competitors must agree to before they can be funded and selected. It is the responsibility of the Chefs of each sport to have these signed and returned to the EFA by 30 June so everyone who is eligible can be selected. Grooms Policy The EFA Team Management has agreed that the role of the groom is specialised and a very important part of the WEG campaign. Based on many successful years experience at past WEG and Olympic competitions, the following rules on groom selection will apply to the Olympic Disciplines and will be strongly recommended to the other disciplines. 1. Grooms must not be a family member or horse owner. Grooms are there and expected to concentrate solely on the horse. Experience shows that family members and owners who groom can and often get caught up in personal situations, thereby losing focus on the horse. Grooms must be removed from these personal aspects if riders are tense, upset or influenced by a whole range of emotions that usually happen in high-pressure situations such as WEG. Grooms must focus solely on the horse and provide what support is required without being emotionally involved. 2. As for young riders being used as grooms, or any inexperienced people such as friends, WEG is not a training area. Grooms at WEG should be competent and experienced especially under the pressure of such a competition. Young riders or any other inexperienced persons should not be used as grooms at this type of event. Officials With around fifty horses and competitors covering the six sports in which we will compete at Aachen, there is a very experienced and skilled support crew of officials that will travel, generally unpaid, to ensure we have the best opportunity to win. These include Coaches, Vets, Doctors, Physiotherapists, Chefs and Media etc. As with the horses and competitors that are part of the team, they are of the highest standard and we have an Officials Agreement that needs to be signed and returned to the EFA by 30 June 2006. Could all appointed officials please complete and return this. It is available from the EFA National website. Uniforms & Horse Feed All Chefs have now returned their expected requirements for these. We are now organising for these to be available in Aachen even though we don t know the final selected teams. Thankyou for the effort you put into coordinating these as if we don t have this information now we are not going to be prepared. Travel Arrangements With the flights for some competitors and officials in the Olympic Disciplines, the Chefs have a set travel subsidy for economy return air travel, which is to be booked direct by each person and either billed to or reimbursed by the EFA. Once you know that you are part of the World Equestrian Games 20 August 03 September 2006 Aachen, Germany 1

team then please arrange for this to be booked with your Chef. Accommodation for horse owners The well-organised Endurance Team booked a golf club hotel 15 minutes from the venue a long time ago. They have generously made available a few rooms to owners of horses that are selected to use during the competition at reasonable hotel rates. If you are an owner and your horse is selected and you re interested in accommodation, please let Brett Mace HPM know brett@efanational.com National Dressage Squad Camp being conducted 13-17 June. The Selectors will consult with National Training Advisor Ulla Salzgeber and National Team Veterinarian Denis Goulding at the camp. The announcement is expected to be published on the EFA National web site on the evening of 17 June 2006. Time Line At the end of this newsletter is a time line of all the due dates and current activities planned for all the different sports leading up to and during WEG. It will be useful for all competitors and Chefs to keep a copy of this. The time line will be updated as the WEG adds more definite times to some activities. There are a lot of points where we have to ensure we submit information to the Organising Committee including our list of nominated entries in July, which must be submitted online through Niki Chapman at the EFA National office niki@efanational.com Good luck to everyone in the final lead-up to selection! Dressage Chef d Equipe Deb MacNicol dmacnicol@bigpond.com Matthew Dowsley & Cinderella While the Australian-based riders have posted their final scores of the selection period at Sydney CDI 3-Star, the European-based riders are still putting runs on the board. Kristy Oatley secured a hard-to-get entry into Aachen CDIO. This event is very much a dress rehearsal for WEG. The Ground Jury consisted of Judges who have been appointed for WEG. In a formidable field Kristy and Quando-Quando scored 66.5 overall with 68.120 from Stephen Clarke (GBR) at C. The following weekend Matthew Dowsley and Cinderella placed 10th at Munich CDI. Two WEG Judges were on the Ground Jury: Dr Dieter Schüle (GER) and Dr Wojtek Markowski (POL). Matthew and Cinderella scored 64.63 with 67.083 from Dr Markowski. A few days later Kristy and Don Bolero posted a super performance at a national competition in Hamburg, placing second behind Isabell Werth and Apache in a field of 30. The pair received a score of 71.083. Matthew and Kristy are both entered for Wiesbaden beginning 2 June and Lingen beginning 6 July. The EFA National Dressage Selectors plan to name the Australian Dressage Representatives at the upcoming Jumping Chef d Equipe Stephen Lamb sjlamb@netspace.net.au Having secured a COC at Eindhoven CSI***, James Paterson-Robinson & Splendid Van De Heffnick will join Jamie Kermond & Stylish King, Peter McMahon & KS Genoa and David Robertson & Sharpe Seal at the final selection event at Balve (GER) on 04-06 August. James finished 6 th in the Grand Prix at Eindhoven, in a class field of riders that included Sydney 2000 gold medallist Jeroem Dubbledam and WEG 2002 gold medallist Dermott Lennon, along with other well-known names such as John Whitaker, Jessica Kurten and Peer Wylde. At this stage, the Australian riders will be competing for the three final positions on the team, with Edwina Alexander & Isovlas Pialotta and Rod Brown & Mr Burns already selected. World Equestrian Games 20 August 03 September 2006 Aachen, Germany 2

US based Harley Brown & Blue Diamond have notified selectors they will not be attending the competition in Balve, while Rory Hovell will compete at the Spruce Meadows National tournament from 07-11 June in an attempt to gain his COC with Quelle Van De Heffnick. If successful, Rory then plans to head to Balve for the final selection trial as well. Matt Williams, currently based in the UK is also competing in Europe and will attempt to secure his COC. Matt recently enjoyed success at the Royal Windsor Horse Show clearing 1.95m in a six-bar competition to share equal first placing with Irish rider Peter Charles. A who s who of the Australian Eventing & Equestrian fraternity gathered on the NSW Central Coast on 27 May to celebrate the marriage of National Eventing Coach Wayne Roycroft to Frances Emmerton. We wish Wayne & Frances all the best for their future life together. It is now less than a week until the hotly-contested final Australian selection event at the Melbourne Three-Day Event. Selectors are hoping to choose 6 Australian-based combinations to make the short listed team and travel to Europe for the pre-weg training camp. There will be both a Riders meeting and a High Performance Panel meeting at Werribee next week and I look forward to the competition and catching up with our long listed riders. Best of luck to all competitors in their final selection campaigns. Peter McMahon & KS Genoa Eventing Chef d' Equipe Rob Hanna rhanna@daronmont.com.au After a very successful month of Eventing in May, Clayton Fredericks has continued the Aussie winning streak overseas by finishing 1 st at the FEI World Cup qualifier at Chatsworth (GBR) with his mount Ben Along Time. Just a week later, the pair also won the 2006 Saumur CCI***. Well done Clayton! Back on home soil at the FEI Eventing World Cup qualifier in Warwick (AUS) on 13-14 May, Shane Rose on All Luck took out the class after a magnificent dressage test (38.2). Shane added only 0.8 time faults from cross country and 3 rails down to finish 51 penalties, 11.1 penalties ahead of the next rider. Heath Ryan rode Diablo Heart into second place with a total of 62.1 penalties followed by Carlene Barton & Covers in third on 74.9 Clayton Fredericks & Ben Along Time Carriage Driving Chef d Equipe Karen Everett karen@everett-art.co.uk May has been an extremely busy month for the various team members. Bob Edwards and his horses arrived safely in the UK in early May and Rachel Haslau arrived in Belgium where she will be based for the summer. Rachel will be driving a team of Lipizzaners and her first competition will be Lahden (GER) in mid-june. Both Boyd Exell and Bob Edwards competed at Royal Windsor and congratulations to Boyd for winning with his World Equestrian Games 20 August 03 September 2006 Aachen, Germany 3

fairly young and inexperienced team a great start for his build up to WEG! The competition was intense with several well-known international competitors providing very strong competition. Boyd then went straight on to Aachen, where he finished fifth after three days of extremely tough competition with the weather doing nothing to help! The marathon course is being moved from the Forest of Aachen to the main show site for WEG and other than the practise areas, which we are assured will be sorted by WEG. The show ran extremely smoothly and was a great opportunity for us to re-acclimatise ourselves with Aachen. Bob is intending to do several British National Events with his team over the next few weeks, with all three drivers aiming to compete at CAIO Breda in Holland in July. Kayla of High Range, near Mittagong is 16 years of age and is one of Australia s leading young Equestrian Vaulters. At the start of this year, Kayla was named NSW Junior Vaulter of the Year (2005) for the second consecutive year by the Equestrian Federation of Australia (NSW Branch). Since the age of six she has competed nationally in Equestrian Vaulting and is currently training with the English Vaulting Squad in the United Kingdom prior to competing in selected events in Europe. Today she is ranked nationally as one of only six A Grade Equestrian Vaulters in Australia. In April of 2004 Kayla travelled to England where she trained as a guest of the English Vaulting Squad. She was subsequently invited to return to the United Kingdom in August 2005 to compete once again as a guest with the English Vaulting Squad. During this visit she competed at the British National Equestrian Vaulting Competition in the West Midlands where she was placed 12 th in a total field of 33 competitors from Europe. Boyd Exell & his team Vaulting Chef d Equipe Bob Hennig bobhennig@optusnet.com.au At the CVI** at Stadl Paura in Austria on 26-28 May Tristyn Lowe has qualified for WEG with an overall score of 7.059. Despite the limitations of her recent knee reconstruction she placed 12th overall and 9th in the new FEI technical test. She was fortunate to be invited by top Austrian vaulter Sissy Janz (who won the CVI) to share her horse Escudo Fox. Tristyn will now be concentrating on preparations for two further CVIs in a lead up to WEG and to re-establish her top 10 ranking. Kayla Brewer also competed at Stadl Paura but had gear problems with a badly slipping roller. She still has several other CVIs ahead at which to achieve qualifying score. Kayla Brewer is the youngest of the three vaulters representing Australia at WEG Aachen later on this year and this will be her first international championship. Kayla Brewer Endurance Chef d Equipe Dr Patricia Mackay Annetts pmackay@nsw.chariot.net.au Endurance Prepares for Aachen Preparations continue for the World Equestrian Games in August. The long list horses will be inspected by team veterinarian Anne Barnes and Chef d Equipe Trish Annetts at the Tom Quilty Cup to be held in Boonah, Queensland on 10 June. World Equestrian Games 20 August 03 September 2006 Aachen, Germany 4
