This letter should answer most of your questions. Our goal is to insure that your Cadet will have an enjoyable and worthwhile training experience. Please thoroughly review the information listed below with your Cadet. This will help insure a safe and positive training experience. This is a non-uniform training and Cadets traveling by commercial carrier are to travel in appropriate civilian clothes. Cadets requiring the regular use of medications need to contact the COTC with details. The final determination of participation in training due to medical condition lies with the COTC, based on NSCC Regulations. COURSE DESCRIPTION: SCUBA Training is designed to qualify you as both Basic Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue. In addition to certification, you will develop strong individual and team skills as you progress through the training with your shipmates. Passing the PRT and Swim Qualification is required the morning of arrival (see below). COURSE STANDARDS AND REQUIREMENTS: Discipline and professionalism will be expected of each Cadet and Officer involved with this command. The training pace will be rapid and a certain physical and mental standard will be required of all participants. SCUBA Training will test the participant s honor, courage, and commitment. Participants must be both physically and mentally prepared for the training. They will be expected to display attention to detail, pride, teamwork, and professionalism at all times. Come prepared to work hard and play hard! PRE-ARRIVAL PROCEDURES: Please forward confirmed transportation arrangement to COTC, LTJG Randy Montrose, by email (rmontrose@nsccpsw.org) and LTJG Crystal Cox, ccox@nsccpsw.org as soon as possible. Transportation to and from the training site for Cadets should be covered by public conveyance covered at parents expense. Considering that trainings may be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, travel arrangements should be made with refundable options. ARRIVAL PROCEDURES: Those arriving by airline, train or bus should plan to arrive at Long Beach Airport on December 18 no earlier the 1900. Please understand this is a work day so the later the arrival the better. (arrivals other than specified hours need prior approval). Officers and cadets arriving by airplane, train or bus will stay at the Los
Alamitos Joint Training Base with Officers at 11200 Lexington Drive, Los Alamitos, CA 90720 CHECK-IN PROCEDURES: All cadets should check in at 0700 with bathing suit on under PT gear. Swim quals will be first from 0700-0800. PRT will follow. All personnel must report with a proper regulation haircut and shave. Upon arrival, personnel are expected to have the following items in their possession; failure to have any item will result in Cadet being sent home at parent s expense: All cadets are required to have the Release of Liability Form signed and emailed back to officers asap. Copy attached Service Record/Copy of Orders Release of Liability Form (Signed by Parent) copy attached Current ID card required. Cadets requiring medication during Training (Prescribed or OTC) must have completed attached medical supplemental form NSCTNG025. Please note that we will be on the dive boat 24/7. We will not dock at night. I highly recommend motion sickness medication for this training even if you do not get sea sick it is highly recommended that you bring it. The boat rocks nonstop during the night time hours. Cadets should eat a small breakfast or have a snack before reporting in. Immediately after check-in is complete, the PRT begins, followed by the Swim Qual s. Failure to pass the PRT or Swim Quals will result is Cadet being sent home at parent s expense. Parents are required to wait till the PRT and swim quals are completed. Upon completion of the PRT and the swim quals we will then transfer all cadets by POV (privately owned vehicle) to Sun Diver, 182 Marine Drive, Long Beach, CA. Which is about 8 miles from the pool. Parents can say their goodbyes as the training will begin. CHECK OUT PROCEDURES: Check out will take place different from the check in location. Sun Diver Boat dock at 182 Marina Drive Long Beach, CA 90803. Parents should arrive no earlier than 1000 December 23. All Cadets utilizing public transportation (plane, bus, & train) must schedule their departures on December 23 no earlier then 1400. Any deviation from this scheduling requirement must be approved by the COTC prior to the Training. ESCORT OFFICERS: Onboard Escort Officers are LTJG Randy Montrose, USN Retired/NSCC, and LTJG Crystal Cox, NSCC. PHYSICAL SECURITY: All personnel will feel safe in their training environment. There will be no hazing, acts of sexual harassment, or harassing by any Cadet or Staff. This includes any activities that embarrass or degrade another individual. Any individual violating this rule will be disciplined. All personnel will report any incidents that they feel jeopardize their personal safety to one of the Officer Staff. HAIRCUTS: All Cadets must conform to the following haircut guidelines: Male: #4 on top, #2 on the side, blended. If Cadet s hair does not meet these criteria, hair will be cut at Check-in site at your expense. CADET PREPARATION: All Cadets need to understand that this is a TRAINING evolution. Each individual will be challenged to do things that are challenging and different from the way I ve always done it. You are also obligated to your shipmates in team situations. DIVE GEAR: All Dive gear will be provided to cadets going for basic open water after departure from the mainland. If you choose to bring your own dive gear, feel free to do so.
