Royals vs. Rangers The Royals split a 4-game stop in Arlington last month, alternating wins with the Rangers...KC leads the all-time series by a 253-245 count, including a 141-111 advantage in Kansas City, specifically 136-107 in Kauffman Stadium. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 5/11 @ Tex L, 2-8 Lewis Duffy 21,206 5/12 @ Tex W, 7-6 (10) Holland Pimentel 23,659 5/13 @ Tex L, 2-5 Gallardo Ventura 26,258 5/14 @ Tex W, 6-3 Guthrie Detwiler 33,818 6/5 KC 6/6 KC 6/7 KC SHORT AND NOT SO SWEET--The Royals and Indians wrapped up a 3-game set here last night with a contest that was called with one out in the home half of the eighth inning, thus giving Cleveland a 6-2 win in the rubber game of the series...the contest was stopped at 9:48 p.m. and 44 minutes later it was determined the storms hitting the metropolitan area were here to stay, thus handing the Royals their first home series loss of the season...chris Young was charged with all six tallies on eight hits with a pair of walks and four K s, falling to 4-2 on the year...royal nemesis, Brandon Moss, continued his mastery vs. Kansas City, turning a 2-0 game into a 4-0 affair with his 10th homer of the year...it was his fourth vs. the Royals this year, while 10 of his 31 RBI on the season have been against KC...meanwhile, the only runs the Royals could muster came via Lorenzo Cain s first homer since May 2, a two-run blast off the batter s eye in centerfield. RECENT STRUGGLES--The Royals enter the final half of this 6-game homestand in the throes of a 2-6 stretch, which has turned a 3-game lead in the American League Central into a 1-game deficit behind the surging Minnesota Twins, who have gone 9-3 in their last 12 to assume the lead at this point...the offense has been the biggest culprit during the drought, plating 20 total runs in the eight games, but 12 of those have come in the two wins, thus Kansas City has only scored eight times in the six losses...the Royals are hitting.202 (53-for-263) during this 2-6 stretch with a.263 on-base pct. and.308 slugging pct...kc continues to have the fewest strikeouts in the American League with 305, but have fanned 72 times in this 8-game span. NED REMAINS ONE SHY OF HOWSER--Already the all-time leader in games managed in Kansas City with 822, Ned Yost is now closing in on becoming the winningest manager in franchise history...his next win will match Royals Hall of Fame manager Dick Howser s 404 triumphs from 1981-86...since taking the reigns in Kansas City on May 13, 2010, Yost has compiled a 403-430 record with the Royals, and he s now just seven wins shy of tying Royals Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog (410) for the most in franchise history...this is Yost s second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons. PACKING THE K --With just under 30,000 in the house for a second consecutive night, the Royals nearly had 90,000 in the house for the 3-game midweek series vs. the Tribe...Kansas City is drawing at an unprecedented pace in the 46 years this franchise has been in existence...through 27 home games, the Royals have drawn 853,373 fans for an average of 31,606 per game, which is up 11,200 per date over a year ago when the club had 550,962 through the turnstiles after 27 dates...all told, the Royals are 302,411 ahead of their pace a season ago and tonight s near sellout crowd will be up against a gathering of 22,126 on this date a year ago...while there are still 54 home dates on the slate, the current per game average factors out to just over 2.56 million over a full season, which would break the team record of 2,477,700 set in 1989...the Royals have eclipsed the 2,000,000 plateau on 11 occasions, but not since 1991. THREE-CITY TRIP AHEAD--Kansas City hits the road following Sunday s matinee with the Rangers for an 8-game journey that will span a trio of Midwestern cities... it all begins Monday in Minneapolis, as the Royals and surging Twins will battle in a trio of 7:10 tilts that run thru Wednesday...KC will then head to St. Louis, where it will take next Thursday off before playing three in Busch Stadium next weekend...the trip concludes with a pair in Milwaukee, which will be followed immediately by a two-game visit from the Brewers to Kauffman Stadium, which will start the next homestand...when this trip begins Monday, the Royals will play 17 of 22 on the road. TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Chi Chi Gonzalez (1-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Edinson Volquez (4-3, 2.95) 2015 2014 Career 2015 2014 Career Chi Chi Gonzalez vs. Royals first career appearance Major League Record 1-0 (0.00 ERA) - 1-0 Edinson Volquez vs. Rangers 0-0 - 0-1 Major League Record 4-3 (2.95 ERA) 13-7 70-62 EDINSON VOLQUEZ takes the hill for his 11th start of the season, his 202nd career outing and 196th starting assignment...he makes his third start against the Texas Rangers, the franchise that originally signed him in 2001...the 31-year-old righty inked a two-year deal on December 29, 2014 with a mutual option for 2017. EVERYTHING BUT THE WIN--Edinson fanned a season-high nine Cubs last Friday at Wrigley Field, but wasn t around to earn the victory, as KC had to rally late for an 8-4 triumph...volquez allowed three runs on six hits over 5.2 innings, losing eligibility for the win after Chicago tied the game in the seventh inning...the veteran right-hander allowed all three runs with two outs, as Kris Bryant doubled in a run with two down in the third, while Jorge Soler hit a two-run homer with two down in the sixth and ending Volky s day after a season-high 109 pitches...his nine strikeouts matched the most by a Royals pitcher this season (Chris Young, May 1 vs. Detroit) and were the most by Volquez since September 25 of last year, when he fanned 10 Braves at Turner Field in a 10-1 win. KEEP ROLLIN --Volky has been one of the best pitchers in baseball over the last 11 months...since July 1, 2014, he has the fifth-lowest ERA, 2.38 (42 ER in 158.2 IP) and the 11th-best opponents batting average (.217) in the Majors among hurlers that have thrown at least 150 innings in that time...he s gone 11-4 in that span with his.733 winning percentage the third-highest since that date, trailing only Washington s Jordan Zimmerman (.813) and the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw (.800). JUST FINE IN JUNE--Volky has enjoyed success in the month of June throughout his career...he enters with a 14-7 record and a 4.34 ERA (78 ER in 161.2 IP) in his 35 career June starts...since 2012, his nine victories in the season s third full month are tied for fourth-most in the Majors, behind only Madison Bumgarner (11), Bartolo Colon (11) and Max Scherzer (10)...last season, he turned his year around by going 4-2 with a 3.67 ERA in the month of June, with his four victories leading Pittsburgh. TOUGH TO SQUARE UP--Opposing hitters have had little success against Edinson this year as he enters tonight tied for the fourth-lowest opponents batting average (.202) in the A.L., allowing only 45 hits in his 10 starts...he has the sixth-best hits per 9.0 innings rate (6.64) and ranks eighth in WHIP (1.08) among the A.L. s qualifying hurlers...he s given up just 12 extra-base hits for the fifth-lowest slugging percentage (.287) in the league and also ranks fourth in home runs per 9.0 innings (0.44). VS. RANGERS--Edinson, who made his debut with Texas in 2005, will face his original franchise for the second time this year and third of his career...he s 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in his previous two starts vs. the Rangers...he took a no-decision on May 12 in Arlington, in a 7-6 Royals win in 10 innings, allowing four runs on six hits over 5.0 innings...his only other outing against Texas was a 7-3 loss as a Padre in 2012. AT HOME IN KC--Volquez has recorded all four of his wins here at The K, looking to match Houston s Dallas Keuchel for the A.L. lead in home victories (5)... he s posted a 4-1 record with a 2.19 ERA (9 ER in 37.0 IP), holding opponents to a.176 average here, which is fourth-lowest in the league...his 12 home wins over the last two seasons are tied for sixth-most in the Majors, while he s recorded a 2.83 ERA and a.212 opponents average in that span...edinson is 38-32 with a 4.04 ERA in 104 Volquez vs. Rangers Player AVG.
