Push-In and Connect Key Events START: Read 1 Guide for Repeated Interactive Read-Alouds Otis By: Loren Long Push-In Story Problem Target Vocabulary Read 1: STATE STATE: Show cover illustration and identify title and author. The title of the book is Otis and the author, or the person who wrote the story, is Loren Long. STATE: Purpose of Read 1: Point to cover illustration. This tractor, whose name is Otis, and this little cow are very close friends. I wonder how they got to be such close friends. Let s read and find out. Read 1: TEACH TEACH: Push-in story problem that s connected to the story purpose by using the think-aloud strategy (I wonder, I noticed, I was thinking.). Page 18-19: Oh dear, this could be a problem. Otis and the calf are going to be separated and that will be difficult (hard) for them to be apart. TEACH: Push-in and connect key events that relate to the story problem. She didn t have him to help her. 26-27 No one was able to rescue the calf. 28-29 The calf heard the sound of Otis motor. 34 Otis rescued his best friend by circling the pond. 38-39 The farmer realized what a special tractor Otis was. Otis was special because the sound of his motor could comfort the little calf when she was sad, rescue her when she was in danger, and make hens lay more eggs and cows produce more milk. The title of the book is Otis and the author, or the person who wrote the story, is Loren Long. STATE: Story Problem: Otis and the calf got separated because a new tractor replaced Otis. STATE: Purpose of Read 2: It was difficult for Otis and the calf to be separated. Things changed for both of them. I wonder how they felt about these changes. Read 2: TEACH TEACH: Push-in characters thoughts and feelings (as they connect to key events) that relate to the story problem. Page # Events Characters Thoughts and Feelings 12 The little calf joined Otis in the barn. The little calf was upset because she had been separated from her mother. I think that the sound of Otis motor comforted the calf. Comfort means to make someone feel better if they are upset. 14-17 Otis and the Calf spend a lot of time together doing fun activities. Sometimes they just like to sit together. I think having a friend to play with made the calf and Otis very happy. Just being together made them happy. Page 5

18-19 The yellow tractor moves in the barn and Otis has to leave. Now the new tractor has replaced Otis. I bet he is thinking, Oh no. I am being replaced by a new tractor. I am not important any more. I am useless. Nobody needs me anymore. And worst of all, I don t get to live in the barn with my best friend anymore. Poor Otis. He must feel so disappointed. The calf must also be feeling sad. She must be thinking, I miss Otis so much. He would always comfort me when I was upset. I miss the sweet sound of his motor. She would just sit with him behind the barn just to be near him. But Otis was so sad that he wouldn t even play anymore. 22-23 The calf got stuck in the mud pond. The little calf must have been so frightened (scared). She must be thinking, I wish Otis were here. I need help. 26-27 No one was able to rescue the calf. The little calf must be so frightened. She is probably thinking. I am scared of that big yellow tractor. I wish Otis were here to comfort me. 28-29 The calf heard the sound of Otis motor. The little calf must feel so glad to hear Otis and know that he was near. 34 Otis rescued his best friend by circling the pond. 38-39 The farmer realized what a special tractor that Otis was and Otis got to do things on the farm that he enjoyed again, especially spend time with his friend the little calf. I can tell that Otis is a real friend to the calf. He is working so hard to rescue (to save) her. The little calf must feel so relieved (so glad that things are getting better). I think now Otis feels so important. He must be thinking. I am important. The farm still needs me. I can be useful. But best of all I can be with my best friend. He got to be with his friend, the calf. The calf was so relieved that her friend Otis was there to help her because she was in trouble. Otis felt proud that he had rescued his friend. He was happy to do things on the farm and he was happy to spend time with his best friend. The calf was also happy because Otis could spend time with her again. TEACH: Pull-out target vocabulary.
