Commercial Heifer and Market Steer Exhibitors Special Notice! All commercial heifers and steers showing at the Mississippi State Fair (and District and Dixie National Junior Round-Up Livestock Shows) must be polled or dehorned with no scurs or re-growth to exceed 1-1/2 inches above the skin line. Remember the minimum weight on commercial heifers is 500 pounds. ALL exhibitors are responsible for weighing their commercial heifers and market steers and declaring their animals show weight on a weight card. Official scales will be made available for weighing livestock. Market Goat Exhibitors Special Notice! Goats may be shown that are polled, dehorned or disbudded with no re-growth to exceed 1-1/2 above the skin line. Removal of horns is not allowed on the show grounds. (continued on next page) 2

Commercial Dairy Heifer Exhibitors Special Notice! Remember the minimum weight of commercial dairy heifers is 200 pounds for the Mississippi State Fair. District and Dixie National Reminders * Animals with pending registration numbers after January 5, 2017, will not be allowed to show at the District and Dixie National Junior Round-Up Livestock Shows, unless extenuating circumstances are presented in writing to the Rules Committee within 5 days of the deadline date. Animal registration information will be verified electronically before the show. * For some purebred dairy cattle exhibitors: A signed affidavit by the current owner, exhibitor, exhibitors parent or guardian and Extension Agent or FFA Advisor stipulating to the fact that the exhibitor is in possession and has ownership of the animal for the purposes of showing at any Mississippi Junior Dairy Show for the dates recorded on the affidavit. All other rules concerning possession, housing and care of the animal would still apply as per Mississippi show rules and regulations. (continued on next page) 3

Adopted 4-H Livestock Club The Wilkinson County 4-H Livestock Club has adopted a 4-H Livestock Club in East Baton Rouge Parish that suffered complete losses of their equipment, supplies, feed and some animals during the flooding in August. The youth (6 to 10 families) had swine, poultry, rabbits and beef cattle. On September 24, Wilkinson County Livestock Club conducted a fundraiser and raised several hundred dollars that are being used to order supplies and equipment to help these 4-H ers get back on their feet. If you would like to contribute new or gently used equipment (water buckets, feeders, feed buckets, brushes, show sticks, etc.) or make a monetary donation for the East Baton Rouge Livestock Club through Wilkinson County 4-H Club, items and money can be brought to the State Fair October 9-10 and given to Adriene Ashley (Ashley Farms) in the swine barn or locate Wilkinson County Ag Agent Lionel Brown on Monday, October 10. Horse Information Special Olympics Horse Competitions Purposeful Refuge and Lamar County Turners N Burners 4-H Horse Club are sponsoring the Mississippi State Special Olympic Horse Competitions on Saturday, October 22, 2016, in the Forrest County Multipurpose Center at 962 Sullivan Drive in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Admission is free. Go and cheer for their Special Friends as they compete! If you have any questions, please call the office at 601-916-7484. 4-H/MQHA Shadow Program Are you interested in being a part of the LARGEST quarter horse show in the south? If so, the 4-H/MQHA Shadow Program is for you! Be sure to mark February 16-19, 2017 on your calendar. Plan to spend an hour, a day, or all week. This program is meant to expose senior age 4-H ers (14-18 as of January 1, 2016) to the behind the scenes action of putting on a world class quarter horse show (the Dixie National Quarter Horse Show). 4-H ers will also be exposed to some of the top industry leaders and have one-on-one educational time with them! Educational stations will include Announcer, Paddock, Horse Sale, Arena Crew, Ribbons and Equine Expo. All Shadow Program participants present on Friday night will be featured in the opening ceremony of the Freestyle Reining performance. Congratulations! Congratulations to Olivia Branum who won first place with her Senior 4-H Beef record book! As a result of this win, Olivia will be participating in National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, GA in November! Harvey Mitchell won third place and a blue ribbon with his Junior 4-H Beef record book, and Ben Fowler won a blue ribbon with his Junior 4-H Pet Care record book. I m very proud of these 4-H ers for completing their record books. I would love to see more record books completed next year. I ll be glad to help you. 5
Volunteer U Multi State Conference The Volunteer U Multi State Conference will be held November 11-13, 2016 at the C. A. Vines 4-H Center in Arkansas. This is an excellent opportunity for 4-H volunteers to get motivated. This is an educational and fun conference! Workshop sessions will include 4-H Club Management and Volunteer Best Practices, Positive Youth Development, 4-H Science (STEM) programs, Healthy Living programs, Citizenship/Leadership programs, funshops, and more. The cost for the conference $175 (3 people per room), $185 (2 people per room) or $195 (1 person per room), which includes meals, and lodging. Some funds are available from Pearl River County 4-H. The deadline for registering is October 17, 2016. If you are interested in participating in this conference, call the Pearl River County Extension Service Office at 601-916-7484.
