E.S. Laird Middle School May 2014 Newsletter Mrs. S. Kohlman, Acting Principal Mrs. T. Rideout-Brace, Acting Vice Principal http://eslaird.lpsd.ca http://twitter.com/eslaird Phone: 306-825-8826 May 2014 The E. S. Laird Middle School family s mission is to nurture the diversity of each of our student s social, emotional, academic, and physical needs in a safe and caring environment. In partnership with home and community, we strive to develop independent, confident, and positive members. Inside this issue: Sports and Clubs Library News 2 Band News 3 Health News 4 Calendar and What s Happening Insert A Message From the Principal May and June are a very busy time in schools with many activities, assessments, and year-end celebrations happening. Please check the calendar, on our website, often to keep up to date with our activities schedule. Our Students are just finishing up the CAT IV assessments in Reading and Mathematics at all grades. These assessments are an important source of information to help us determine how our students are improving in their knowledge, skills and abilities and guide our improvement efforts. Our chocolate fundraiser has come to a close at this point. If you have any outstanding chocolates or money, please ensure that your son or daughter returns them back to the school. The money raised from this fundraiser pays for all of the extra and special activities that virtually all E.S. Laird students benefit from. Thank you to all the parents and families that have supported our fundraising efforts again this year. This year our SCC AGM will be held on May 28 at 7:00. If you are interested in sitting on the executive, or just want to come out and find out more about what our SCC was all about this year, please plan on attending this meeting. Our grade 6 parent/student orientation evening will be held on May 27 at 7:00 p.m. All parents and students who will be transitioning to E.S. Laird for grade 7 in the fall are encouraged to attend. On May 13 th at 4:00 p.m. our volunteer tea will be held in the student commons at E.S. Laird, all parents and volunteers are welcome to attend this thank you tea. Without our parents and community partners, our school would not be able to offer nearly as many activities to support the learning and growth of our students. Your efforts in this regard have been noticed and are appreciated. The Sabres Shine celebration of the arts will also be happening from May 12 14 with our gala evening on May 14 th. This is a wonderful display of the many artistic talents of our students; please drop by, you will be amazed. In closing I would like to wish everyone a fantastic spring, now that it is finally here. Enjoy the upcoming warming weather, get outside and get some sun and fresh air. Sabres of the Month At E.S. Laird we take great pride in celebrating our students accomplishments. Each month every grade 7, grade 8, and grade 9 interdisciplinary team of teachers nominates students deserving of Sabres of the Month award. Students are nominated on a number of criteria including effort, positive citizenship at school, improvement, perseverance, and commitment to the school and its students. The Sabres of the Month for May are: Team 7 AB Althea Geollegue, Dreyson Nohnychuk Team 7CD Shane Conrad, Britney Dunn Team 7 EF Jamie Palisoc, Taylyr Yakimovich Team 8 AB Renz Cimatu, Braiden James Team 8 C Gaige Holt Team 8 DE Wesley Wood-Lawrence, Tyler Smith Team 9 AB D Neille Bettschen, Branden Troutman Team 9 CD Jayden Hippe, Neil Segundo Team 9E Thomas Svendsen Congratulations to these students who have demonstrated the character of a SABRE!

Page 2 E.S. Laird Middle School Sabre Idol Congratulations to Ally Robinson, 2014 s Sabre Idol winner! Ally won a prize package, $100 to donate to the Interval Home, a performance on Lloyd FM, and a performance (date TBA) at the root community emporium. Congratulations Ally! Rugby Sabre rugby will take place in the gym until the field has dried up. Practices are Mondays from 3:40-4:30 pm, and Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30 pm. Students are welcome to join Reaper Rugby practices on Mondays from 7-9. Dropping off and Picking up Your Child Please avoid using the staff parking lot as a drop off and / or a pick location for your child. It is best to arrange to pick your child up in an alternate location to ensure safety for all students. Please note, within the staff parking lot area, there is a handicap zone. It is important to ensure the safety of our students and as such we are asking all other drop offs and picks up occur either in the front of the school or on the side of the school. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Library News Hard to believe it s already May! One thing we have on our minds in the Library is year-end inventory. We take a few days at the end of the school year to take stock of our collection, account for missing books, and plan for next year s budget. It s time to seriously start thinking about overdue books. If you re one of the many people who have been missing a book for more than a month, odds are that book is buried so deeply in your room or your locker that it will take a small army to find it. Students who have overdue books as of the third week of June will be responsible to pay the value of that book to the Library so it can be replaced. However, that doesn t mean those in good standing can t still enjoy books for the next 7 weeks! We have many new books on display for your enjoyment. Or maybe you re feeling adventurous and will choose one of our gift-wrapped mystery books to sign out! We ve had a lot of fun in the Library during our noon-hour LEGO competitions. The first was held on April 3 with a theme of buildings, and the lucky winner of a $10 concession gift certificate and two delicious Kapow Pops was returning champion Brandon Carter with this Cookie Monster Eiffel Tower design. We ll see what he can come up with when he takes on challengers at the next competition, vehicles on May 1.
