James Joyce YOUR KJZZ JOURNEY BEGINS Meal key: B = Breakfast L = Lunch D = Dinner Saturday, May 30- Day 1: Depart Phoenix for Dublin, Ireland Join us on the group air flight from Phoenix, or purchase your air ticket at www.kayak.com Sunday, May 31- Day 2: Welcome to Dublin! Arrive in Dublin and transfer to your centrally-located hotel. Freshen up before we meet to stretch our legs in a short explore of the neighborhood. Tonight, enjoy a Welcome to Ireland! feast with your KJZZ host Jim Paluzzi. Sleep in Dublin (D) Day 3: Explore the Heart of Dublin This morning we ll stroll through Dublin s statue-lined O Connell Street, view elegant Georgian squares and marvel at St. Patrick s Cathedral. We ll tour the ancient Book of Kells and Oscar Wilde s Trinity College. While at Trinity, we ll meet American students who have decided to study in Ireland. You ll learn even more about the Irish educational system while meeting with local professors. We ll then continue on a light walking orientation of this remarkable 1,000-year-old city. After an independent lunch, we set out to discover the Dublin Writer s Museum. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore the lively streets and cafes of Dublin at your own leisurely pace before meeting for a 6:30pm traditional Irish Pub dinner. Sleep in Dublin (B, D) Day 4: South to Historic Kilkenny After a hearty Irish breakfast, we depart Dublin and journey south by motor coach through the wild Wicklow Mountains to the magnificent 18 th century estate at Powerscourt and its gardens, which are thought to be among the finest in Europe. (You may recognize the setting for Barry Lyndon, Excalibur and Henry V). We ll move on to the Glen of Two Lakes, the magical, monastic 6 th century settlement of Glendalough, which was established by the saint who lived in a tree, St. Kevin. We will provide a picnic lunch for you to take with you along the ride. We will then make our way to the place many consider to be the loveliest town in Ireland: Kilkenny on the River Nore. Towering over the town is the 12 th century stronghold of the Butler family, Kilkenny Castle. Enjoy a welcome dinner, followed by a bodhran drumming lesson (traditional drum of Ireland). Sleep in Kilkenny (B, L, D)

There are no strangers here, only friends that have not yet met. William Butler Yeats Day 5: An Historic Outing to the Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary After breakfast, board the motor coach for an exciting day in the County Tipperary. We ll visit several historical sites, including the Rock of Cashel. Legend associates the Rock of Cashel with St. Patrick, but the name comes from Caiseal ("stone fort") and the hill was originally the residence of the kings of Munster. Excavations have revealed some evidence of burials and church buildings from the 9 th or 10 th century, but it was in the early 12 th century that the Rock began to be developed into a major Christian center. The frescoes in Cormac's Chapel, which are the oldest Romanesque wall paintings in Ireland, were covered with whitewash at the Reformation (16 th century) and remained hidden until the 1980 s! Enjoy lunch before returning to Kilkenny, where you ll spend a relaxing afternoon and dinner on your own. Sleep in Kilkenny (B, L) Day 6: Kilkenny to Killarney via Kinsale We depart Kilkenny for the quaint town of Kinsale this morning. You will have time to stroll the streets and take in some of the many art galleries before lunch. We will view Cork s 17 th century Charles Fort, the best-preserved star fort in Europe before driving on to Killarney, where we settle in for the next two nights. You will have many wonderful options for an independent dinner this evening. Sleep in Killarney (B, L) About Killarney: For centuries, the Killarney Valley has been recognized far and wide as Ireland's most beautiful destination - being aptly titled as "Heaven's Reflex". It inspired Poet Laureate Alfred Austin to write - "If mountain, wood and water harmoniously blent, constitute the most perfect and adequate loveliness that nature presents, it surely must be owned, that it has, all the world over, no superior". Prepare to be amazed by the incredible beauty, rich history & heritage, myths & legends and wonderful culture & traditions of this special place. Day 7: The Spectacular Dingle Peninsula After breakfast, we will head off to the beautiful Dingle Peninsula and visit the greatest concentration of ancient sites in all of County Kerry, if not all of Ireland. Note: The Dingle Peninsula/Corca Dhuibhne is a unique storehouse of Irish cultural heritage. Until recently, it was isolated from the influences of the modern world, which meant that the language and traditions of the area have survived intact to a greater degree than in most of Ireland. Much of the peninsula is a Gaeltacht or an area where the Irish language (Gaeilge or Gaelainn) is widely spoken in the home, workplace or school. In the early summer, many school students from other parts of Ireland visit to attend three week-long Colaistí Samhraidh or Summer Language Colleges. Staying in the homes of local people, they take part in a rich program of events in a broader effort to save the Irish language for future generations. We ll stop at one these cultural language centers to learn just how this unique project is proceeding.

After an included lunch, we will visit the charming town of Dingle. The remainder of our travels today will take us past the sites for the films Ryan s Daughter and Far and Away on our way to the magnificent Blasket Center, an impressive heritage center where the ancient language and culture are celebrated. We continue on to the 1,200-year-old Gallurus Oratory, an early Christian stone church with a uniquely-cobbled stone roof that is watertight to this day! Along the way, taking a step back in history, we venture past a few of the ancient Beehive Huts. Upon our return this evening to Killarney, enjoy an independent evening of music and Irish culture. Sleep in Killarney (B, L) DAY 8: Travel by Horse Buggy through Killarney National Park Today, enjoy the beautiful scenery of Killarney by taking a Jaunting Car (horse-drawn buggy). We ll ride through the grounds of the Killarney National Park to the majestic 15 th century Ross Castle on the shores of Lough Leane. Learn about the local history and folklore and savor the beauty of Killarney National Park from the comfort of this traditional mode of transport. In addition, you ll be hopping on a cruise for a lovely hour on the water. Enjoy an independent lunch in the park at the Muckross House. The afternoon is then free for you to explore. Dine on your own in Killarney this evening. Sleep in Killarney (B) DAY 9: Fly North to Regal Edinburgh Scotland After an early breakfast, we depart the hotel for Shannon Airport, where we will catch our flight to regal Edinburgh, Scotland. Upon arrival in this regal city, we ll check into our centrally-located hotel, and then set out by foot to discover one of Europe s most stunning cities. Lose yourself in Old Town's labyrinthine alleyways along the Royal Mile and find your way along the canal-side walk through Dean Village to coastal Leith. Pick up some lunch along the way at one of Edinburgh s many restaurants. A Welcome to Scotland dinner is included this evening along with a special musical event. Sleep in Edinburgh (B, D) DAY 10: Discover the Heart of Edinburgh Today, our journey takes us further through cobbled alleys, elegant streetscapes, handsome squares and quiet parks of Edinburgh. Enjoy an in-depth walking tour, which includes the birthplace of the city: Edinburgh Castle. You ll also enjoy a visit to the National Museum of Scotland. We ll end our walk just in time for you to enjoy an independent lunch followed by a free afternoon to explore the Edinburgh s charms at your leisure. This evening, we ll gather for a Scottish feast where we ll sample local delicacies and perhaps some very good whiskey. Sleep in Edinburgh (B, D) What is Haggis? The origins of haggis are somewhat mysterious, but the dish certainly dates back well before poet Robert Burns' era, going back thousands of years. When hunters returned with their kill, some of the meat could be salted or preserved, but some would need to be eaten straight away. The fresh, edible offals (entrails and internal organs) would be chopped and mixed with cereal and herbs and cooked over the fire in the ready-made container, the stomach. Hey presto - the first Haggis!

DAY 11: A Day in Glasgow A mere 46 miles from Edinburgh lies a city that is worlds apart from its royal counterpart. Glasgow has a reputation for being a gritty, industrial city, but you might be surprised to see and learn how the town has recently changed. Artsy streets and hip bistros now dot the city landscape. Upon our arrival, we ll meet up with a local guide who will offer us an insider s view into the changes taking place here. Next, we visit the Kelvingrove Art Gallery. The Spanish Baroque-style Kelvingrove (built in 1901 of red sandstone) is the stirring soul of the city s art collection, one of the best amassed by a municipality in Europe. It is the most visited museum in the UK, outside of those in London. The art (from French Impressionists to Spanish Surrealists) is world class, but there is much more to see here, with exhibits on Scottish and Glasgow history, armory, and war, and on natural history too. There's also some humor: Watch out for the furry haggis animal. Enjoy an independent lunch before making our way back to Edinburgh for an evening of independent exploration. Sleep in Edinburgh (B) DAY 12: Loch Katrine & Stirling Castle After breakfast, we set out to discover the beauty of the Scottish countryside. Our one day tour from Edinburgh takes us sightseeing to Loch Katrine and introduces you to the land and legends of Scottish heroes William Wallace and Rob Roy. Enjoy a cruise and end the day with a memorable visit to Stirling Castle, one of Scotland s most historically important castles. A farewell lunch is included this afternoon. Sleep in Edinburgh (B, L) Thursday, June 11- DAY 13: Return home with a lifetime of happy memories *** Trip Details Subject to Change ***
