Welcome to the 2016/2017 Winter Season! Welcome to the Waterville Valley Freeski Team. My name is Dan Shuftleton. I am the ECS Freeski Program Director and Head Coach for the WV A/BBTS Freeski Team. This is a competitive development program for 14 year-old and older athletes. It is our program's goal to teach our skiers the skills required to learn the sport and to perform and compete competently. Competitive freeskiing demands strong skiing skills and acrobatic competency equal to learning both alpine ski racing and gymnastics. Also physical conditioning is necessary to train and compete effectively at this level. It is also our objective to field all of our athletes in competitions and to advance them to the highest level possible. In the case for freeski this culminates in the Olympics, X-Games, Dew Tour, Rev Tour, National Competitions, Open Field National/International Competitions, and FIS. In order to develop the proper skills, everyone will need extensive trampoline, bag jump and on snow training as well as the proper conditioning to ensure strength and flexibility year round. Looking forward to a great season. Communicating with Us! It is important that you communicate any questions or concerns you might have as they come up. Here are the best ways to get your questions answered: -Take the time to thoroughly review this manual and the other program guides available on the WVBBTS website. -Attend the Coaches Night on Saturday, Nov. 19th at WV A. This is a time to find out more about freestyle skiing and information on the upcoming season. -Utilize the Parent liaisons Chris Henderson chrishen@comcastnet, Will Pouch willpouch1@hotmail.com and this program guide for any questions about the program and how we functions. Any questions regarding scheduling, travel, and events should be directed to Dan Shufjleton dshuffleton@wvbbts.org. -The Freeski Coordinator will be in the Comp Center office every weekend. Stop by if you have questions. -If you have questions about your athlete's progress, talk with your athlete's Freeski Program Philosophy! Goals: WVBBTS Freeski is a full-spectrum training program designed for young athletes age 14+ who participate and compete in all levels of slopestyle. We provide a progressive sequence of unique training opportunities that develops technically strong skiers and builds proper acrobatic skills, as well as all-around Testimonial "Attending the Waterville Valley Academy was one of the most enlightening experiences ofmy life. It turned out to be the best jumpstart to my career imaginable. I competed an incredible amount during my time at the academy. Surprisingly once I graduated, competition was not the path I chose. I chose to progress my street skiing and make a career out of it. While some might think my time being coached and competing at the academy may have been a waste, I will be the first to say that it was certainly not. No matter what your career path, you cannot beat the mentality of a trained competitor. Whether your sliding a big rail, or at the top of a halfpipe, the same mental and physical training applies. I can proudly say that a huge amount of my success in street skiing is from the fundamentals, progressive skill, and, above all, the competitive training that Dan Shuffleton and the Waterville program gave me." Clayton Vila About Us: WVBBTS freeski programs are a unique opportunity for young people to be involved in the exciting sport offreeskiing. This winter, training will take place at Waterville Valley Ski Resort and the Snow's Mountain training venue at the Academy. Our competitions and daily training at the mountain will be held on the exhibition park. Slopestyle: Training: Exhibition Ski and Snowboard Park Snow's Mountain Venue (Phil's Hill Training Center and the Thomas Barbeau Training Center) We look forward to working with each individual athlete. Our qualified coaches and staff will help each athlete set goals for the season and will assess them personally in order to create an individualized training plan. Here at WVBBTS, we are dedicated to supporting all athletes in any way possible so they can maximize their individual potential.

Freeski: A Program Description Athletes can take part in our program as full-time or part-time academt students, full- time training only participants, or weekend program participants. Athletes, ages 14 and older/9 th grade and up, male and female, can compete in many different levels offreeski events: the USASA NH Series regional events, the USSA Eastern Freeskiing Series ('A' level), the FIS Grand Prix, the Rev Tour, as well as various open events and local rail jam events. Athletes may qualify via the USSA Freestyle Points list to attend Junior Olympics and US Championships. Freeski athletes compete in slopestyle and big air. Athletes will spend time perfecting their acrobatic skill and many freeski maneuvers on the trampoline and bagjump prior to taking them to snow. The freeski competition calendar is packed full of competitions, so athletes and parents will need to make specific plans with the freeski coaches.
