The No. 24 Thunderbirds will represent Boise State s highest-ranked opponent so far this season, as well as the third place team in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference. SERIES HISTORY The Broncos have a 33-23 advantage in the series history against Southern Utah, including a victory in their previous meeting at last year s MRGC Championships that saw Boise State get the conference title with a 196.625, while the Thunderbirds were runner-ups with a 196.275. LAST TIME OUT The Broncos took down BYU 196.400-195.100 last weekend at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho as a part of the Gem State Invitational. The crowd of 2,715 had plenty to cheer about all night as Boise State rattled off their fifthstraight win to open the 2016 season. MEET 4 AT SOUTHERN UTAH FRIDAY, FEB. 5 // 7 P.M. (MT) // CEDAR CITY, UTAH Sandra won the allaround title with a 39.475, good for the 14th-best allaround score in the country this season. Krystine won the uneven bars by tying a career-high 9.95, Ann shared the vault title thanks to a 9.85 and both Maddie and came away with the victory on floor with back-to-back 9.95 s to conclude the Broncos night. SCOUTING SOUTHERN UTAH Southern Utah is 2-3 on the year and has a 195.056 average for the season. Their highest score in their first four meets of the season came on Jan. 15 when they posted a 195.600 in a losing effort against Utah (196.725). The Thunderbirds have the top gymnast on beam in the conference in Stacie (9.856 avg.) along with two of the top three vaulters with (9.825) and Virginia Brownsell (9.819). is also No. 4 on floor thanks to a 9.819 average. NO. 9 RANKING The Broncos moved up one more spot in this week s Road To Nationals rankings, moving up to the No. 9 spot for Boise State s highest national ranking in program history. As a member of the MRGC, Boise State is the only non- Power Five representative in the top 10, while the SEC has five teams, the Pac-12 has two and both the Big 12 and Big Ten each have one. Boise State is the secondranked team in the west region, trailing only UCLA (No. 5). TOP OF THE MRGC With an undefeated record, the Broncos sit atop the MRGC teams standings with a 196.175 average on the season. The Broncos also hold the top spot in the conference in each event category, entering Friday s meet with a 48.900 average on beam, a 49.033 average on vault, a 49.192 average on the uneven bars and a 49.050 average on floor. Individually, a Bronco leads in three of the four events, as well as the all-around. has the top mark in the all-around (39.475 avg.) and on floor (9.925 avg.), has been the best on bars (9.883 avg.) and leads the way on vault (9.850 avg.). GOOD COMPANY Boise State is one of three women s gymnastics programs to boast a current top-10 ranking in gymnastics and a top-5 ranking for GPA amongst collegiate women s gymnastics programs in the past year, according to the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/ BRONCOSPORTS.COM MEET 4 // 2016 BOISE STATE GYMNASTICS 1
Women s (NACGC/W) rankings that included team GPA s from the 2014-15 academic year. The Broncos are joined by No. 4 Utah and No. 7 Alabama as the three programs to accomplish the feat. At the time of the NACGC/W rankings, the Broncos held a 3.7256 GPA, and last semester they earned a 3.81 semester GPA good for the highest team GPA in athletic department history. MRGC WEEKLY HONORS The team swept the MRGC weekly awards this past week, as Sandra was selected as the MRGC Gymnast of the Week and seniors Maddie and Krystine earned MRGC Co-Specialists of the Week. and now both have two weekly honors a piece so far this season. IMPROVEMENT ON BEAM The Broncos had their best performance on beam this past weekend, scoring a season-high 49.075 on the balance beam. Paige, Shani, and all earned 9.825 s season highs for all four. Look out for Boise State to continue to improve on the event as the season continues. STELLAR ON BARS The Blue and Orange threw down a 49.425 on bars last weekend, tied for the fourthbest uneven bars score in school history. The all-time best score (49.575) was scored last year in a home meet against Alaska-Anchorage. NEWCOMERS, No. 10 RECRUITING CLASS According to CollegeGym- Fans.com, the Broncos two freshmen Sarah and Shani gives the Blue and Orange the No. 10 recruiting class in the country. Two accomplished L10s, and should be a consistent presence in the Boise State lineup this season. 2015 MRGC DEFENDING CHAMPIONS, 2016 FAVORITES The Broncos were tabbed as the favorites of the MRGC heading into the 2016 season. The Blue and Orange received eight points and two of the four first-place votes in the MRGC Preseason Coaches Poll. Southern Utah was picked to finish in second with six points and one first-place vote, and BYU and Utah State tied for third in the poll with five points. RECORD SETTERS IN THE CLASSROOM The team recently finished the fall semester with a 3.81 single-semester GPA, setting the record for the highest singlesemester GPA in school history in the process. The program also has a 3.67 cumulative GPA, which is also the highest cumulative GPA amongst other Boise State teams. BRONCO CAPTAINS Seniors Maddie and Krystine have been tabbed as team captains for the 2016 season. This will be second go-around as captain and s first season with the title. INDIVIDUAL NATIONAL RANKINGS has the top individual national ranking for any Bronco, coming in at No. 4 in the all-around with a 39.475 average. She is also tied for fifth on floor with a 9.925 average. is No. 17 in the allaround with a 39.288 average and (9.883 avg.) is No. 9 on the uneven bars.
