Official Home of SJU Athletics www.sjuhawks.com Preview/Game Saint Joseph s University Hawks (1-2) Fighting Illini (4-1) Saturday, November 25, 2006 1:00 Assembly Hall (16,618) Champaign, IL Jack Jumper, Associate Director of Athletic Communications Office: (610)-660-3389 Cell: (610)-636-3701 Fax (610)-660-1724 E-mail: jjumper@sju.edu TIPPING OFF Coming off a heart-breaking loss at Virginia Commonwealth University on Sunday, the Hawks look to rebounds this Saturday as they face the Illinois Fighting Illini at Assembly Hall. Saint Joseph s, who is in the midst of a five-game road swing, will try to snap a twogame losing skid and return to.500 with a victory. SCOUTING THE FIGHTING ILLINI After a 3-0 start to the season, Illinois dropped its first game of the season earlier this week, only to post an impressive 76-39 win over Northern Colorado on Wednesday. In her 12th season with the Fighting Illini, Theresa Grentz has led the team to a 4-1 record to start the year. Grentz is a familiar face to the opposing Hawks, as she was head coach at Saint Joseph s from 1974-76, and posted a 27-5 record, including an appearance in the 1976 AIWA Tournament. Leading the way for Grentz and the Illini is senior forward Lacey simpson, who, as of earlier this week, was averaging 13.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Junior forward Danyel Crutcher and sophomore guard Lori Bjork are averaging 11.8 ppg and 11.0 ppg, respectively. Likely to round out the starting lineup are sophomore forward Chelsea Gordon (10.3 ppg) and senior Erin Wigley (7.0 ppg). (Full preview on page 5) THE SERIES The Hawks and Fighting Illini meet for only the fourth time ever, and only the second time in Champaiign, IL, when the squads match up Saturday. Illinois holds a 2-1 edge in the series, having won the past two meetings. Illinois earned a 64-50 win at Hawk Hill on November 23, 2004 (box score on page 5) and previously downed SJU 78-65 at home on December 21, 1989. Saint Joseph s won the initial game between the squads 81-66 at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on December 27, 1988. LAST TIME OUT: LAST-SECOND SHOT LIFTS VCU PAST HAWKS, 60-59 A jumpshot by Virginia Commonwealth University's Krystal Vaughn with 0.8 second remaining lifted the Rams past Saint Joseph's, 60-59, at Alltel Pavilion. Trailing 58-57, senior guard Whitney Ffrench g knocked down two free throws with 14.1 seconds left to give SJU a 59-58 3dge before the last-second basket. In the opening half, the Rams took an early 11-2 edge, but Saint Joseph's fought back with its outside shooting to take a 22-20 edge. VCU, who took a 35-32 lead into the half, fell behind 46-37, but came back to take a late lead and win on a last-second shot. Junior Timisha Gomez, who missed the final minutes vs. Hartford with a cut to her lip, earned her third start of the year at VCU. OPENING UP Saint Joseph s opener its 34th season with a 63-56 win over Bucknell Sunday at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. The Hawks, which have posted a 25-9 record in season-opening games, have won nine of their past 11 openers. Even more impressive, Saint Joseph s has compiled a 31-3 mark in home openers. The last time the Hawks lost a season-opening game was November 22, 2002, dropping a 59-44 decision to Big 5 rival Villanova. That loss also marked the last time Saint Joseph s lost a home opener as well. HAWKS PICKED FOURTH IN ATLANTIC 10 Saint Joseph's was picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 women's basketball race, according to a poll of the Atlantic 10's head coaches and media released today by conference officials. The Hawks, coming off the nation's biggest turnaround (13 games) in 2005-06, return 10 letterwinners from last season's WNIT team. George Washington received 13 of 18 first-place votes cast by the panel of coaches and media. 2005-06 Atlantic 10 Tournament Champions Temple (24-8/12-4) received two first-place votes and placed second in the preseason poll, while Xavier (21-9/11-5) received three first-place votes and placed third in the poll. Co-regular season championship Charlotte (21-9/13-3) was selected fifth in the poll and is followed by (Richmond (13-17/79), Dayton (17-12/8-8), Massachusetts (11-17/8-8), La Salle (11-17/7-9), Duquesne (13-17/6-10), Rhode Island (8-20/5-11), Saint Louis (7-20/4-12), St. Bonaventure (9-18/3-13), Fordham (10-18/5-11). CORNISH NAMED TO ALL-A-10 PRE SECOND TEAM Saint Joseph's senior guard Ayahna Cornish was named to the Preseason All-Conference Second Team along with Duquesne's Loui Hall, Saint Louis' Tyler McIlwraith, Safi Mojidi of Rhode Island and Jennifer Strong of Dayton. Cornish, a native of Philadelphia, earned A-10 all-conference Second Team honors last season after leading the Hawks in scoring at 12.1 points per game. As a junior, Cornish helped lead the Hawks to the team s 16th 20- win season and claim the Wildcat Classic title. Individually, Cornish also was selected to the Big 5 All-Second Team and named MVP of the Wildcat Classic. So far this season, the co-captain is second on the team in scoring (11.3 ppg) and steals (2.3 spg). HAWKS EARN TOP TURNAROUND IN THE NATION Last season was a terrific year for the Saint Joseph s women s basketball program. Not only did the Hawks earn a postseason berth and win 20 games, SJU also posted the best turnaround in the nation. After winning just seven games in 2004-05, the Hawks posted a 20-11 season last year. The 13-game improvement was tops in Division I. CLOSING IN ON A CENTURY In only her sixth season at her alma mater, Hawks head coach Cindy Griffin stands only seven victories away from 100 at Hawk Hill. Griffin, who has posted a 93-66 record at Saint Joseph s, has averaged 18.4 wins per year and four postseason berths in five years. A member of the SJU Women s Basketball Hall of Fame, Griffin (nee Anderson), trails trails only Stephanie Gaitley (196 wins) and Jim Foster (248 wins) for victories at Saint Joseph s. Saint Joseph s University Game Notes

SJU AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS IN ATTENDANCE The Hawks have a long tradition of great fan support, and the 2005-06 season wasn t any different. Last year, Saint Joseph s finished second in the Atlantic 10 and 102nd nationally, in home attendance, averaging 1,376 fans per game. HAWKS AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS Saint Joseph s finished the 2005-06 season ranked among the national leaders in three categories last year. The Hawks finished 18th in scoring defense (55.8), 36th in turnovers per game (14.7) and 50th in free throw percentage (72.9). PULLING RANK Twice last season the Hawks downed a nationally ranked team. Saint Joseph s earned a 65-64 win over #17/19 Temple 65-64 on January 27 and downed #23/25 North Carolina State on November 20. The two wins over ranked opponents is the first for the Hawks since the 1999-2000 season and is the first time since 1991-92 they have done so in consecutive contests. Saint Joseph s is 29-101 all-time against nationally ranked opponents after going 2-1 last year. Currently, one opponent is ranked in the national polls (George Washington), while four other squads (Boston College, North Carolina State, Temple and South Florida) are receiving votes. CLOSE CALLS Nine times last season Saint Joseph s played a game decided by one possession or in overtime, with four of those contests occurring in Atlantic 10 action. Washington Klimowicz missed FG at the buzzer L, 53-51 ON FFIRE After a breakout junior year, Whitney Ffrench kept the momentum going into the 2006-07 campaign. Finishing second on the team in Atlantic 10 scoring (9.2 points per game), the point guard scored a game-high 21 points in the Hawks 63-56 win over Bucknell and is averaging a team-high 13.0 ppg. Coming off a career-high 7.8 points per game last year, Ffrench also proved a knack for getting to the free throw line and it rubbed off on her teammates. In the 24 games in which Ffrench played, Saint Joseph s averaged 19.6 trips to the charity stripe a game and converted 14.1 of those. In the four contests Ffrench missed, the Hawks averaged 10.3 trips and 8.0 makes per game. She also finished tied for second in the A-10 in free throw percentage at 77.3 percent. She has a team-high 17 free throws over three games this year. GOMEZ GOING STRONG A versatile guard, junior Timisha Gomez proved her athleticism last season. As a sophomore, Gomez averaged a career-high 7.1 points per game and led the Hawks in both steals (35) and assists (81). Averaging 5.7 points per game during the non-conference portion of the schedule in 2005-06, Gomez excelled in A-10 play, finishing fifth on the squad at 7.7 ppg. In 2006-07, Gomez is averaging a 7.0 points to go with 3.0 rebound and 1.7 assists per game. WELL OYLED MACHINE Sophomore guard Jen Oyler posted a solid rookie campaign last year, as the 6-foot-1 guard earned Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team honors and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. A threat from behind the arc, Oyler topped the Hawks with 55 three pointers and finished sixth on the team in scoring at 6.9 points per game. Having started the first three games of the season, Oyler has converted four three pointers, while averaging 6.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. IMPRESSIVE START After seeing limited action in her first two seasons on Hawk Hill, senior center Zoya Pavlovskaya has made an immediate impact this season. Making only her second career start, the 6-foot-5 center grabbed a career high 13 rebounds and eight points and was arguably the reason the Hawks earned a 63-56 win over Bucknell. In the following two games, Pavlovskaya had combined for 10 points versus Hartford and VCU and is averaging a career-high 5.7 points and 6.3 rebounds a game. Prior to this year, Pavlovskaya had scored 24 points and grabbed 53 rebounds over 32 contests. McING IT HAPPEN Despite seeing limited action her rookie season, guard Mary Kate McDade proved to be the point guard the Hawks hoped she could become. Over 24 games, McDade averaged 1.3 assists per game and had a 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio. In Atlantic 10 contests, the Philadelphia native averaged 2.0 assists per game and finished with a 3.7 assist-to-turnover ratio. This season, McDade has shown a knack for cleaning the glass as she currently ranks fifth on the Hawks in rebounding at 3.0 per game. Saint Joseph s University Game Notes Page 3

CAPTAINS ON THE DECK Saint Joseph's head coach Cindy Griffin announced that seniors Ayahna Cornish and Whitney Ffrench will serve as the team's captains for the 2006-07 season. Returning for her second stint as captain, Cornish averaged a team-high 12.1 points per game before suffering a season-ending injury. In her absence, Ffrench stepped up her scoring production and leadership of the team as the Hawks went 5-3 over the final eight contests. HAWKS INK FOUR TO NLIS Saint Joseph's announced that Kallie Hovatter, Dominique Bryant, Laren Robinson and Sarah Acker have signed National Letters of Intent on November 9. A three-year starter at Stonewall Jackson High School, Hovatter has averaged 20.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, 5.0 steals and 3.9 assists per game through her junior season. The 2005-06 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference's leading scorer, Bryant enters her senior season at St. John's College High School as a McDonald's All-American nominee. As a junior, the 6-foot forward earned First Team All-WCAC and Second Team All-Metropolitan Area honors after averaging 21.3 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Ranked 64th by the Blue Star Index Top 100, Robinson is coming off a solid junior season in which she earned Third Team All-Patriot District and Patriot District All- Tournament Team honors. Averaging 15.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game, the 5-foot-9 guard also earned 2004-05 First Team All-Patriot District and Third Team All-Regional accolades. Twice named the Wyoming Valley Conference's MVP, the 6- foot-3 Acker helped Greater Nanticoke to a 29-1 record last season. A three-year starter at center, Acker has tallied over 1,250 points, 1,300 rebounds and 570 blocks for her career. S-A-I-N-T JOSEPH S The corporate title of Saint Joseph s University, which has been in place since Saint Joseph s was granted university status by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1979, is now the public title of the institution for all aspects of its operations. Previously, the abbreviation of St. Joseph s University was permitted in a number of alumni and athletic contexts. According to the most recent edition of the Higher Education Directory, there are at least nine recognized "St. Joseph's" among the nation's colleges and universities. Only one of them-saint Joseph's University, Philadelphia-is a university-level, Master's I, NCAA Division I institution. A complete spelling of S-A-I-N-T Joseph's University in all contexts will help eliminate any confusion among higher education and other public constituencies. Hawks has served as the nickname for Saint Joseph's athletic teams since 1929. The idea for The Hawk, as mascot, was originated by Jim Brennan during the 1954-55 season. Brennan, an exmarine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for three years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a 69-56 win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk, who was present at most women s basketball games, became a main-stay in 1989. Since then, eight SJU students have donned it. It has been selected as the nation's top mascot by Sports Illustrated, Street & Smith Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine. Eastern Basketball tabbed The Hawk as the Atlantic 10 Conference's best mascot as well. In January 2001, The Sporting News named The Hawk the Nation's Best Mascot in its Best of College Basketball issue. Saint Joseph s sophomore Kevin Hensler dons the costume for every women s game. FOREIGN AFFAIR The Hawks have been very effective at attracting talented international players to SJU. Presently, the Crimson and Gray have two foreign players - seniors Whitney Ffrench (Nova Scotia, Canada) and Zoya Pavlovskaya (St. Petersburg, Russia) - on their 2004-05 roster. Overall, nine international players have worn the Crimson and Gray. The others are Alix Burns England (1986-89), Megan Compain New Zealand (1994-97), Jana Lichnerova Slovakia (1997-00), Barbora Kuklova Slovakia (1997-00), Susan Moran Ireland (1999-02), Irina Krasnoshiok Moldova (2001-04) and Amra Mehmedic (2001-04). HEART OF A HAWK In addition to athletics and academics, community service has long been one of the traditions of the Saint Joseph s University women s basketball program. The Heart of a Hawk program is the team s way of giving back to the community. Each student athlete is required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service each semester. STREAKING UP AND DOWN THE HARDWOOD The following is a look at Saint Joseph s current hot and cold streaks heading into today s game. HOT Jenna Loschiavo Coming off a career-tying game at Virginia Commonwealth University in which the sophomore scored 13 points, including three from behind the arc. Kim Locicero For Saturday s game, the former SJU walk-on rejoins the squad. Instead of wearing the Crimson and Gray, she will don one of the most famous mascot suits in the nation, that of The Hawk. COLD Road Games The Hawks have dropped its first road contest of the season and two in a row dating back to last season. Turnovers Saint Joseph s is coming off a season-low 11 turnovers at Virginia Commonwealth. Saint Joseph s University Game Notes

AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT THE FIGHTING ILLINI ILLINOIS LAST GAME: ILLINI TOP BEARS, 76-39 Illinois bounced back from its first setback of the season in a big way Wednesday. Two days after dropping a heart-breaker at Northern Illinois, the Fighting Illini routed Northern Colorado, 76-39 at Assmembly Hall behind a career-high 14 points and six rebounds by rookie Jenna Smith. Illinois put forth a stellar defensive performance the day before Thanksgiving, holding the Bears to just 29.8 percent shooting and converting 28 turnovers into 37 points on the offensive end. Fighting Illini freshman Lacey Simpson had five steals to go along with her 12 points and five rebounds. Illini opened the game on fire, building up a 17-3 lead in the first five minutes of the game. They extended their lead to 40-23 at halftime, and finished 13-of-23 from the floor (57 percent) in the opening stanza. In the second half, Illinois used a 9-0 streak to put the game away and cruise to the 37-point victory. The Illini finished the game28- of-55 from the floor (51 percent) and 88 percent (15-17) from the free throw line. Junior Stephanie Chelleen came off the bench to score 11 points, while sophomore Lori Bjork added 10 points. ILLINOIS PROBABLE STARTERS No. Pos. Name Yr. Ht. Ppg. The Fighting Illini, clinging to a two point lead, 41-39, went on a 12-2 run, from 10:07 to 5:41, to take a commanding 55-41 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Illinois' Jeré Issenmann drained two three pointers and Tiffanie Guthrie capped the run with a layup. Saint Joseph's would get no closer than 11 over the final five minutes, as the Fighting Illini made three of four free throws over the final 60 seconds.
