Communications Department Victory Field 501 W. Maryland Street Indianapolis, IN 46225 317.269.3542 www.indyindians.com HISTORY IN THE MAKING 56-54, 2nd IL West RHP Gerrit Cole (NR) Monday July 28, 2014 7:05 p.m. EDT Frontier Field Rochester, NY Game #111 Road Game #58 Indy is pursuing the first three-peat IL West titles in franchise history and only the second stretch of three straight division titles in any league; 1961-62 (American Association) & 1963 (IL South Division). LAST TIME OUT [Josmil Pinto belted a fifth inning grand slam as defending IL Pitcher of the week Brandon Cumpton and the Tribe fell 6-3 at Frontier Field. THE INDIANS... Are 3-8 following the All-Star break, 9-17 in July and 11-23 since reaching their high-water mark of 45-31 on 6/22 (at NOR)... Have dropped a season-high eight straight at Victory Field (since 7/11); The longest winless streak at home during V.F. Era (1996) is nine (MR: 7/1-22, 2010)... Current seven-game skid matches their season-long stretch from 5/4-10 (last 8-game streak was 6/29-7/ 5, 2010)... Were 63-46 after 109 games in 2013 (63-47 after 110). STARTING A COMMOTION Indy s starters have suffered a loss in six straight games and are winless over their last eight starts... The last member of the rotation to earn a win was Nick Kingham on 7/19 at COL. COLE TRAIN The Indians will now look to RHP Gerrit Cole to end their starting woes as the ace is scheduled to make the first start of his Major League rehabilitation assignment tonight for the Tribe in Rochester... The Indians will look to Cole to end their season-worst seven-game losing streak.. The 2011 No. 1 overall draft pick returns to a 19.0 inning Triple-A scoreless streak as over his final three starts with Indianapolis prior to his call to Pittsburgh, Cole turned in three straight scoreless outings, including 5.0 scoreless frames to finish out his start against Buffalo (5/25/13) and back to back 7.0 shutout inning efforts on 5/31 at Columbus and 6/5 against Durham... Overall, in 2013 Cole posted a 5-3 record and impressive 2.91 ERA (22 ER in 68.0 IP over 12 starts with the Indians. BUCCO BITS This season, prior to landing on the Pittsburgh DL on July 9 with right lat soreness... Cole turned in a 7-4 record and 3.78 ERA (36 ER in 85.2 IP) with 78 strikeouts and 29 walks over 14 starts for the Pirates... This comes after the right hander also went 10-7 with a 3.22 ERA (42 ER in 117.1 IP) in 2013, including a dominating month of September in which he was named the National League s Rookie of the Month after going 4-0 with a 1.69 ERA (6 ER in 32.0 IP) over five starts... Cole ended his fantastic MLB debut with two playoff starts, including a win in game two of the National League Divisional series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Today s Tribe Starter RHP Gerrit Cole Current Streak: N/A On a Major League rehab assignment from Pittsburgh, former No. 1 overall draft pick Gerrit Cole returns to a Tribe uniform tonight in Rochester... In addition to a 19.0 inning Triple-A scoreless streak, Cole boasts an impressive.197 batting average against (50-for-254) over 13 career Triple-A starts... The hard-throwing right hander has never faced Rochester in his Triple-A career and owns a 2-2 record and 3.32 ERA (14/38.0 IP) in six road starts. CUT TO THE CHASE Chase d Arnaud broke out of a small 0-for-9 slump by going 2-for-4 with a run, RBI and stolen base in last night s contest in Rochester... The strong effort continues a solid month of July for d Arnaud, who in 24 games is now batting.298 (25-for-84) with 12 runs, six RBI, six walks and seven steals...overall, during the month of July, d Arnaud has failed to reach base in just one game in which he has started. NAIL BITERS The Tribe was walked off 1-0 on Saturday night and has seen an IL-high 41 of 110 games (37%) settled by a lone run... Indy also leads the IL with 63/110 games (57%) decided by two runs or fewer. RING THE MEL Mel Rojas Jr. went 1-for-3 with a walk and his team-leading 15th RBI in the month of July last night... Rojas 15 RBI in 23 games this month come after he plated just three runs in his first 28 games with the Tribe this season. DOING THE SPLITS Since joining the Tribe, Rojas Jr. has put together some pretty significant split stats... The switch hitting slugger has excelled on the road batting.347 (26-for-75) with 11 RBI and 12 runs scored in 24 games as opposed to just a.247 mark (21-for-85) in 27 games at Victory Field... He has also smashed lefties to the tune of a.364 average (16-for- 44) as opposed to hitting just.267 (31-for-116) against right handed pitchers... Though a small sample, Rojas Jr. has also turned in dominating numbers in day contests, posting a.438 average (14-for-32) in 10 games played during the day vs. a.258 mark (33-for-128) in 41 games played at night. SERIES SHOWDOWN The Indians and Red Wings meet for the fourth of eight tilts of 2014... The Tribe has dropped each of the first three games of the series and begins today s action having previously dropped three straight games at Frontier Field in three of the last eight series in Rochester since 2006 (2006-07 & 2012). TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE With the Tribe s defense turning two more double plays and its offense hitting into two more twin-killings on Sunday, Indy has seen 49 DP in just 26 games during July...
