Firebirds of the Week Congratulations!! Sophie Mitra, Senior Dance Team As a senior, Sophie is a four-year member of the Free State dance team, two-year member of the National Honor Society; a Kansas Honor Scholar and a National Merit Semi-Finalist. It is obvious that she takes her role as a student and a a mentor very seriously, and treats each with the utmost respect, dedication and professionalism. Sophie shows continued commitment on both the field/court and within the classroom. She is a tremendous leader and understands the importance of leading by example. She is well-respected by her teammates and all to often puts others needs and concerns first. As her coach, I am proud of her efforts as a student, her enthusiasm for the Lawrence and Free State High School community and her dedication, respect and responsibility for her teammates, coaches and future goals. In all of my dealings with Sophie, she has shown to be a young woman of character, intelligence, and talent. I am honored to nominate Sophie as the Firebird of the week and look forward to watching her continued success as a senior as well as her journey post Free State! Sean is a hard-working, dedicated, caring, and passionate individual who is willing to sacrifice at all times to help someone else. The daily operations of the program would not be possible without his tireless contributions. We are forever grateful that you choose to be in the program, Sean! #Ubuntu Cassidy Warden, Senior Girls TEnnis Team Cassidy is consistently one of the hardest workers we have on our team. She s a self-driven player who is constantly pushing herself. Cassidy maintains a positive attitude, and is extremely coachable. Congratulations, Cassidy!

Debate Congratulations!! Free State currently has the #1 ranked DCI Squad in the State (8 bids earned), and be #1 ranked team (Lillich/Yost-Wolff). It is the first time in school history that we have won team sweeps at Washburn Rural, widely considered the most competitive invitational tournament in the state.
