The Lady Bears (3-6) picked up a 94-71 victory over Wichita State last Thursday and backed that up with a 76-66 win against Oral Roberts on Sunday, and have two games left before Missouri Valley Conference play as a Dec. 19 trip to Alabama awaits following the NU contest. MSU opens the MVC season Dec. 29 at Indiana State. Sunday s game is Missouri State s first opportunity to host a Big Ten school since a third-round WNIT loss to Illinois in 2010. The Wildcats have three players that average in double figures and shoot 43 percent or higher from the floor, and average 62.5 points per game while limiting opponents to a 59.5 scoring average. Scouting the Lady Bears Missouri State is picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley Conference this season and has a veteran roster despite the fact that only five Lady Bears are upperclassmen. The Lady Bears non-conference schedule features eight games against 2017 postseason clubs. MSU boasts five players with at least 34 career starts, led by MVC Preseason Player of the Year Liza Fruendt, who averages 17.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Four other players average between 5.9 and 8.8 points per contest, with senior Aubrey Buckley leading the club with 5.0 rebounds per game and Brice Calip handing out a team-high 17 assists. As a team, the Lady Bears score 64 points and allow 68 with shooting percentages of.385 overall,.351 from beyond the arc and.772 at the foul line. Last Time Out Behind a season-high 31 points from senior Liza Fruendt and 50 percent shooting from 3-point land, the Missouri State Lady Bears picked up their second consecutive win Sunday afternoon with a 76-66 victory against Oral Roberts at JQH Arena. Missouri State led for all but 47 seconds in the final three quarters, and used a key 8-0 run around the final two periods to build a 63-53 lead that remained at seven points or more for the final eight minutes of the contest. ORU got off to a 7-for-8 shooting start to lead 16-8 just five minutes into the game, but the Lady Bears countered with a 13-0 run that included 3-pointers from Fruendt, Lee Ann Polowy and Elle Ruffridge for a 21-16 advantage. The Golden Eagles briefly led 24-23 early in the second period before Alexa Willard capped an 8-2 run for a 31-26 lead with 5:07 to play. Missouri State held the five-point margin to halftime, and ORU came out of the locker room with two quick baskets for a 38-all tie less than a minute into the second half. Four Lady Bears made multiple 3-pointers on the way to a 10-for-20 showing from bonus distance, and MSU owned a 34-25 rebounding lead. Danielle Gitzen handed out four of MSU s 12 assists, and the Lady Bears limited themselves to 10 turnovers while forcing 15 ORU miscues. Quick Hits Missouri State has ranked among the MVC s top three in total rebounds, offensive rebounds and rebounding margin for seven consecutive seasons. The Lady Bears rank second in offensive boards in 2017-18 at 12.8 per game and grab 34.4 percent of missed shots, just shy of putting them above 35.9 percent for the ninth straight season. Missouri State became the 35th Division I team to reach 800 victories on Jan. 15, 2016, and entered the 2017-18 campaign ranked 33rd on the all-time wins list. Missouri State has finished third or better in the MVC standings 18 times in 25 seasons in the league. MSU is 22-14 in its last 36 road games, dating to Feb. 20, 2015, a stretch that included 10 consecutive MVC road wins. The Lady Bears are also 17-5 in their last 22 MVC road contests, and 15-4 in their last 19 games in the state of Illinois. Head Coach Kellie Harper Kellie Harper is 75-63 in her fifth season at Missouri State and holds a 242-192 career record in her 14th season as a head coach, including four NCAA Tournament appearances and six WNIT berths in that span. She earned her 200th career coaching victory on Nov. 17, 2015 against MidAmerica Nazarene. Her teams have historically played their best in the postseason, as she holds a collective 28-19 record in conference tournaments, NCAA Tournaments, and WNIT games. Assistant Jennifer Sullivan enjoyed a standout career at Memphis, piling up 800 points, 310 rebounds and 99 steals as a three-year starter for the Tigers. Director of Operations Ashley Houts was a four-year starter at Georgia, scoring 1,514 career points and helping the Bulldogs to four NCAA Tournament appearances. MSU Peaks in The Valley The Lady Bears are 301-145 all-time in MVC play with a 175-48 home record against league foes. Missouri State has won at least a share of 12 regular-season titles and nine conference tournaments since the 1989-90 season. MSU has played in 13 of the 25 Valley tournament championship games and 15 of the 32 title games since the inception of the Gateway Conference Tournament in 1983. Missouri State All-Time Missouri State is in its 49th season of women s collegiate basketball and has an alltime record of 833-586 (.587). MSU began formal competition in 1969 and, with a 16-15 mark in 2017, secured its 32nd winning season. Fandemonium With the conclusion of their ninth season in JQH Arena, the Lady Bears finished second in the MVC standings in terms of attendance, drawing 33,678 fans in 13 home dates in 2016-17 for a 2,598 average. MSU has now led the MVC in attendance 24 times in the past 28 seasons, and ranked 46th nationally in 2016-17. Since the 1990-91 season, Missouri State has ranked in the top 20 nationally in average attendance 19 times, including a string of 10 straight top-10 finishes from 1992 through the 2000-01 season.
