Shawnee State women s basketball fell in an exhibition game on Monday night, losing to Morehead State (Ky.) 82-70 at Johnson Arena. Morehead State would score the first six points of the period, with Mckenzie Calvert opening the scoring with a mid-range jumper, and Miranda Crockett hitting a pair of free throws and a shot for a 6-0 lead. However, SSU would rally to take the lead. Ashton Lovely (SR/Jamestown, Ohio) would spark a 9-0 run, hitting two threes and making a free throw for seven points. Hannah Miller (SR/Coal Grove, Ohio) would also hit a lay-up in the run as Shawnee State went up 9-6. Jaleesa Avery would complete a three-point play to tie the game back up, but SSU would immediately retake the lead. Lovely would drain another three to reach 10 points, and after Calvert would split a pair of foul shots, Shania Massie (SR/Greenfield, Ohio) would drain a three to put the Bears back up 15-10. Morehead State would then score three straight baskets to go up two, but Miller would complete a three-point play to end the quarter to give the Bears an 18-17 lead after one quarter. Previous Game Release WOMEN S BASKETBALL TROUNCES BLUEFIELD ON SENIOR DAY, 104-59 PORTSMOUTH Women s basketball sent the four members of its senior class out on a winning note in the final home game of their illustrious careers as Shawnee State (16-11, 9-7 MSC) trounced Bluefield (12-13, 6-10 MSC) Saturday afternoon. The last time the Bears scored over 100 points in a regulation came was a 107-49 win against Malone on January 23, 2010. The win was also the third time that the Bears have eclipsed the 100-point mark in the final home game of the regular season. In addition to today, Shawnee State took down Ursuline by a score of 106-55 during the 2008-09 home finale and defeated Ohio Dominican 117-46 in its final home game of the 1994-95 campaign. Fittingly enough, it was the Bears four seniors that did what they have been doing all of their careers with Shawnee State that fueled the victory. Alannah Sheets scored 25 points to become just the third player in program history to eclipse 1,800 career points. She now has 1,811 points for her career as she passed Heather Schilling (1,794 points) during the game. Priscila Santos led the team in scoring with 28 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Santos has now scored in double figures in 20 of her 26 career games with the Bears. This includes 11 games in which she has scored 20 or more points. Catrice Mitchell not only moved into second place all-time in the career block lists with nine rejections on the day. She tied the school record set by Becky Babione against Malone during the 2006-07 season. Babione is the school s all-time leading blocker with 251 in her career. Mitchell now has 156 over her four seasons. She scored 23 points in the victory, while also pulling down 11 rebounds as she also recorded a double-double. She also hit back-to-back threes in the game after coming in 0-for-1 in her career with that lone attempt back in the 2010-11 season. She now has 911 points in her career. Diane Abbady also finished in double figures with 13 points on the afternoon to round out the senior contingent. The MSC leader in rebounding also came down with six rebounds for the game. In total, the senior class contributed 89 of the team s points (85.5% of the total offense) playing in their final home games. The Bears seized control of this game midway through the opening half and never looked back. The first 10-point lead of the game, 21-11, came with 12:47 to still play in the opening half. Before the game reached the second media timeout of the opening half, SSU had opened a 21-point lead, 36-15, with 6:59 left in the half. They would take an 18-point lead into the half, 43-25. With a lead in the high 20 s at the midway point of the second half, SSU made it a 30-point contest, 77-47, with 7:54 to play in the game. Mitchell s second trey in as many possessions made it a 40-point game, 96-56, with 3:33 to play in the game. Mitchell would also score the team s 100th point of the afternoon at the free throw line before the Bears wrapped up the 104-59 win. Women s basketball now sits in sole possession of fourth place in the conference after Lindsey Wilson loss to thirdplace Cumberlands today. The Bears have a one game advantage over the Blue Raiders with two games to play. Shawnee State will look to exact some revenge in its final weekend of the regular season. The Bears travel to Cumberland on Thursday in a 7 p.m. Eastern start. The game will be played at 6 p.m. Central which is the local time zone in Lebanon, Tenn. The regular season wraps up with those aforementioned Blue Raiders in a 3 p.m. Eastern (2 p.m. Central) tip.
