PENOLA GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 8 January 2018 President s Corner Happy New Year to all members and I hope 2018 is straight and long. In the past 2 months we have held 2 very successful golf days. 69 players from the Adelaide Metro Vets visited on a wet day in December and 40 Vignerons played on a very hot day in January. Both days, as do others held each year, provide excellent profit for the club. However these days cannot be successful without the support of members volunteering to assist. I thank those ladies who provide lunch for the Vets day and the men who cooked a BBQ and provided course refreshments for the Vignerons. Our great course also has a lot to do with the success of these days. The organiser of the Vets day stated that the course was in the best condition he had seen for the 8 years he had been attending. This is a wonderful accolade for all those that maintain the course. Course Info The grounds committee for 2018 consists of John Mossop (Chairman), David Murray, John Wilkinson, Ant Mathys, Claire Mossop and of course, P.R.W. Thankyou all for giving your time. All players would have noticed by now the art deco water pipe display between the 15 th and 16 th holes. The temporary solution had to be taken to overcome a large leakage which could not be repaired in the channel due to tree roots. Our thanks go to P.R.W. and Stump for the work they put in to solve the problem. I m sure the captains will announce a ruling for this area shortly. Ride on Mower The Beach Energy sponsorship has now been utilised with the purchase of a new mower. Thanks go to Stump for sourcing the best mower to suit our needs. The deal negotiated by Stump not only enabled us to purchase the mower but we had enough in reserve to also purchase new cups for the golf holes. These will be in place shortly and will make putting even easier! Opening Day The Opening Day for 2018 will be March 17 th. The day will also be held in conjunction with a Sponsors golf day. I encourage all members to play on the day and show your support to our sponsors. Gail and Lofty will update you with the details of the Opening Day as it gets closer. Good Golfing Bill Men s Captain Happy 2018! Firstly a big thankyou to Katnook and Parker Estate for their very generous monthly medal sponsorship during December and January, and congratulations to the winners. The 2018/19 Match Committee is: Shane Anderson, Gail Stephenson, Andrew Hutchesson, Jeremy Briggs, Greg Hutchesson and another women s member to be confirmed. If you have any questions or suggestions, please let us know, we are keen to continue growing the club. Page 1

The 2018/19 program is nearly finalised, and it follows the same format and layout as previous years with championships played during September. 2017 Survey results regarding club championships are also included in the newsletter, data trends indicate members are quite happy with the current format. Only 14 members completed the survey, however the match committee will provide the same opportunity later in 2018, so if you want to have input please don t miss your opportunity. GolfSE have proposed a changed format for 2018 Pennants which is summarised below. Played during club tournaments (to minimise volunteer work required by each club during Pennants) Played as match play in groups of 4 Shotgun start at 10:30 (to maximise numbers at presentations) Only $10 per player including afternoon tea/bbq Pennants players can t enter tournaments while playing match play If you have any feedback for GolfSE, please let me know as they would like all feedback by February 2 nd, 2018. I think it is a step in the right direction, as many players did not enjoy playing Pennants during a stroke round. There is already a few PGC players interested in playing Pennants, so please let me know if you are keen let s bring a Pennant or two back to the club in 2018! Happy Hitting, Women s Captain Women s Golf has again been interrupted by the very warm weather. With the Christmas and New Year breaks, numbers have been down. Most will be back from the beach or other holiday locations soon and be looking to have a hit. There are some posters on the board for the Australian Women s Open to be held at Kooyonga Golf Club on the 15 th 18 th February. This is a great opportunity to watch world class golfers in action. Southern Ports (24 th Feb 3 rd March) entries are being taken at the moment and as usual Penola women will be very well represented. Sue Kilsby (pennant coordinator) has submitted 2 proposed Pennant teams along with a list of reserves to the District Committee. We will have to wait to see which divisions we will be playing in. 3 new players received a handicap and golf link cards while membership continues to increase. Gail Stephenson Bereavement The Penola Golf Club wishes to express our sincere condolences to Paul Harmer whose mother, Lorna Harmer, recently passed away. Our thoughts are with Paul and the entire Harmer family. Shane Page 2

Key Happenings Opening Day The Penola Golf Club s Opening Day will be held on March 17 th. As took place last year, the Opening Day will coincide with a Sponsors Day. The club has invited each sponsor to field a team for an Ambrose Competition. Please make every effort to attend as this is not only a fantastic way to begin the season, but also provides an opportunity for the club to show how thankful we are of the tremendous support we receive from the community through generous sponsorship. Monthly Medal Sponsors A huge thank-you to our February Monthly Medal Sponsor. Details of this event will be posted in next month s newsletter. Men s Bunker Roster Always on the lookout for bunker volunteers. If you are at all interested in helping out, let the captain know. The more help, the less work there is for everyone. 27 th January Boyd/Hill 3 rd February Bill Cheers 10 th February Anderson/Briggs 17 th February Chris Holden 24 th February Paul Harmer 3 rd March John Boneham 10 th March Boyd/Hill 17 th March Bill Cheers 24 th March Anderson/Briggs 31 st March Chris Holden 7 th April Paul Harmer 14 th April John Boneham Recent Results Men s Results Saturday 2 nd December Katnook Monthly Medal - A Grade Lindsay Storer 75 Leo Price 77 John Mossop 78 Greg Hutchesson 81 B Grade Peter Walker 73 Peter Docking 74 Page 3

Then, as now, the course is held in high esteem by visiting golfers. A very successful and record annual tournament was held on the links last week-end. The course was in excellent order and visiting golfers expressed their pleasure and surprise that a small country club could provide such good golfing. An early start was made on the Sunday and the starter had the large field away in excellent time. The men's Canadian foursomes attracted 14 entries and the ladies was well filled. In the mixed foursome there were 28 pairs and the open on Sunday saw 67 starters face the barrier. That the course played well was evidenced by the many good score returned, 13 players were under their handicaps in the morning and 12 in the afternoon. Page 4

In the A grade with 20 entrants the tussle was between Max Osborne, of Millicent, and K. Dohnt, Penola. In the morning round Dohnt returned a 79 to be three over the card and Osborne 82 for a six over. Osborne had bother with his putter in the morning but putted better in the afternoon to return a course record of 76 on the lengthened course. Dohnt in the afternoon missed two short putts to finish j with an 80, one stroke behind Osborne on the day. Osborne's win was a popular one, as he has been a consistent visitor to Penola. The B grade championship went to A. Laslett, of Robe, with 185. In presenting the trophies, the president (Mr. H. J. Goldman) expressed pleasure at the support given by visiting golfers to the tournament and trusted they had enjoyed themselves. He also thanked the starter (Rex Gurr) and secretary (Bob Taylor). Mr. A. Paterson thanked the associates for the very fine meals they had supplied over the two days. Williams 184, W. Millhouse 185, Dr. McLean, P. Buhlmann 185. F. Sheather 188, T. Ward 188, L.
