MAY 2014 Kareela Kronicles From the President Welcome to the May issue of Kareela Kronicles. I trust everyone enjoyed the Easter break and had a memorable day for Anzac. As I reported last issue the first three months of the year are generally not the greatest for trading and Kareela Golf Club was no different to any other club throughout the state. However the tide has turned and April showed a significant improvement across all business units in the club. I am also pleased to report that we now have in excess of 5,000 members. During our strategic planning exercise last year we identified this figure as a target we would like to reach by 2016, to reach it now is fantastic and congratulations must go to Dennis Skinner, his Team and the Board on implementing a marketing plan that has produced such great results. Anzac Day was huge. The club was chockers nearly all day and from all reports patrons were extremely well behaved even though they were forced to wait a while for drinks and food due to the presence of so many people. Thanks to the staff for their handling of such a huge crowd. Takings for the day were well in excess of last year s figures. The concrete landing for the stairway from the rear entrance to the pro shop deck was poured early in the month and recently the timber stairs were fabricated off site. I am pleased to report that the stairs are now in place and in use with a few minor finishing touches still outstanding. Design and construction was undertaken by Mark Elton (who also built the deck) with a significant saving to the Club. Many thanks to Mark and all the volunteers who helped during the excavation and construction stages of this project. Work has commenced on levelling the fairway and covering tree roots of the large gums on the western side of the 4 th hole (commencing at around 100m from the tee) and building a low mound adjacent to the top level of the 2 nd tee providing a managed egress for stormwater to enter the hazard further north. Last week I met with Council s Tree Preservation Officer to gain approval for the removal or trimming of trees that inhibited growth on greens and tees and/or their root system damaged the playing surfaces of our golf course. As an outcome from this course inspection, a number of trees will be removed keeping Chainsaw Bob and our volunteers busy over the winter period and beyond. The volunteers have also been busy last month poisoning and/or removing crab grass, filling hollows and topdressing on the 1st and 2 nd fairways, trimming trees in front of the 8 th and 9 th tees in addition to repairing damage caused by the storms in March. The Cub recently obtained the Development Consent for the erection of a digital LED sign on the corner of Bates Drive and the Highway. To provide power to this sign and to minimise costs the volunteers formed a chain gang to excavate a trench for around 100 meters from the nearest source to the sign. Not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination but not beyond our Team of volunteers. Well done guys. Ladies Golfing News The new MiClub card system is now operational. If all lady golfers could please swipe your card in the Pro Shop. Our Chick of the Walk competition, which was run over 4 weeks, saw the team of Carmel Fifield and Sue Harding defeat the team of Nola Maughan and Kath Turner 3/2. Well done girls! During the month we held the Carmel Galvin Memorial Day, a 2Ball Ambrose event sponsored by Barry Galvin. The winners were Yvette Rochford and Carol Jones. The NSW Bowl, a 4BBB stableford event was won by Janice Stirling and Lesley Aston. Tracey Arnold achieved her first Hole in one on the 18 th. For any other results please look at Lady Member Results on our web site. Pennants Fantastic results! Kareela girls won both the Weekend and Bronze 1 pennant competitions. There is nothing like bringing home the trophies! The Bronze 1 Pennant competition has been going since 1967 (47 years) and this is only the 3 rd time we have won, so we are all very excited. News One of our true characters, Kaye Inglis, has decided to return to her country roots. Kaye and her husband have bought a property in Parkes near her family. In true Kaye style, with a joke, a laugh and a hug we farewelled our mate on condition we keep in touch. Men s Charity Day for Bates Drive School is Friday 16 th March. All golfers, men and women are encouraged to participate and play on the day and show our support for a worthwhile cause. Wishing you good golfing! 2

Footy Tipping Comp Congratulations to our Major Pennants Team! Men s Golfing News MiClub The club s new golfing administration system MiClub is now up and running. Many of you will have noticed the new look -up screen in the main lounge as well as the new look cards. This system serves to make tee bookings and competitions much less hassle and much more friendly for those participating. As well as this, the majority of golfers will now have had the opportunity to book your tee times online through the MiClub portal. This portal can be accessed from the Kareela Golf & Social Club website in three areas. The top right hand corner of the header, the golfing page as well as the members page. Using your MiClub details you can log in to see and modify your tee time as well as check all the latest golf results. Charity Day Kareela Golf & Social Club s annual charity day is to be held on Friday 16th of May. It is sure to be a fantastic day out for all, with funds raised to go to Bates Drive public School; a very worthy cause. There are still plenty of spots available for individuals to play, and at only $55 per person it s fantastic value for a marvellous day out. If you wish to get involved, simply see reception or the boys in the pro shop to book your spot! 3

Clubs & Community Awards We are immensely pleased and proud to announce that Kareela Golf & Social Club has been announced as a finalist for the ClubsNSW Clubs & Community Awards 2014. The Clubs & Community Awards recognise the outstanding social contributions made by clubs in their communities. The awards also serve to highlight the important role and relationship that local clubs have in serving the communities with which they are so closely connected. The category in which the club has been nominated is Welfare and Social Inclusion. This category is all about clubs dedication to working with community organisations and other disadvantaged groups. The story for which the club was nominated was all about the funds raised for Bates Drive Public School through Kareela Golf & Social Club s Annual Charity Golf Day. Over the years, the Club has been able to raise over $100,000 for Bates Drive School in order to maximise the learning opportunities of kids with mild to severe learning and intellectual disabilities. We would like to thank all our members, guests and sponsors who all play a vitally important role on the day in raising the most money possible for Bates Drive School. 4

Relay for Life A huge thank you to everyone who got involved in this years effort at the Sutherland Shire Relay for Life. The event was a fantastic 24 hours for all involved which helped raise funds and awareness for cancer and cancer research but was also a fantastic opportunity for Kareela Golf & Social Club to get involved in the local community. It was fantastic to see so many friendly faces volunteer their time in the freezing cold and near monsoonal conditions on the night. A very special mention should go to GM Dennis Skinner for being present for the entire 24 hours and going back to his roots by roughing it in a tent for the night. Thank you also to everyone that was present at the dinner and who completed a lap or two in memory of friends and loved ones that we have lost in the past, as well as survivors and friends and family who are still fighting cancer. The event managed to raise over $500,000 for cancer research and is believed to be the biggest event of its kind in NSW. We look forward to participating in next years event as well; which was declared to be the sister event of the Relay for Life in Hawaii for next year! 5
