OGC Newsletter May 2018 Welcome Back to the Club!! Charlie and Susan Osborn Jerry Schmitt Green Side Up By Dustin Finally, we have turned the corner and spring appears to be here for good. The late spring has set everything behind. Even the tulips have yet to flower. All the greens, tees and fairways had their winter leaf tissue removed with the 1 st mowing. The turf looks exellent, however the grass has not yet begun to grow. The turf will kick in as soon as we receive a warm rain and near 50-degree night time temperatures.

Green Side Up continued... As for our golf course preparations for the season, April s snowy weather has set us back a couple weeks. May is here and our BUSY Club calendar leaves the Grounds & Greens Team little time to complete my spring goals. Over the next few weeks, I expect to complete: Deep-tine aeration. Stump hole sod work. Final leveling and sodding of (5) new forward tees. Bunker edging and sand depth check. New team member training. We ve completed the 2 nd year of the Sunlight Enhancement Program and I expect to see continued improvement in our key areas of play. The new forward tees have created an enjoyable length proportionate with our other tee options. The new monarch way stations, located near #2 and #7 forward tees, were seeded last fall and I anxiously await the establishment of our butterfly habitat. We never know what summer will bring, but we are ready and excited to build upon 2017 s success. Welcome back to OGC and to the 2018 Season! Off the Tee By Chuck The New Ratings Are In! The final stages of the Donald Ross expert Craig Schreiner s golf course revamp are nearing completion. The final five forward tee locations have been built and will be ready to play soon. Golfers will now have five tee options. The WSGA\USGA Course Rating Team has tabulated the official course rating numbers: Tee Color Yardage Rating Slope Par Red (Women s rating) 5146 70.9 124 70 Red\Gold (Women) 5573 73.3 128 70 Gold (Women) 5946 75.5 132 70 Red\Gold (Men s rating) 5573 67.9 120 70 Gold (Men) 5946 69.5 124 70 White\Gold (Men) 6195 70.3 126 70 White (Men) 6423 71.4 128 70 The goal of Schreiner s plan was twofold: 1) equalize the stroke value from all the tee locations. In other words, have all sets of tees set to a par 70. 2) Make the distances proportional from tee location to tee location. For example, prior to the white tee and gold tee adjustments, gold tee players had a 6 yard advantage on hole #18 and an 60 yard advantage on hole #13. Those variations are now more proportional. The effect of tree removal on course rating- minimal, if any. Obstacle rating portion of the Course Rating guidelines give the same value for both rough and trees. The rational: where trees exist off the fairway, grass does not grow, consequently, the ground is barren. No trees off the fairway, you will notice the rough is much thicker. An example at OGC is the healthy rough short and left of hole number 5 where there used to be a tree and barren ground. The most important factor in course rating: yardage, and it isn t even close. Consequently, because the yardages have not been altered with the white, the white\gold, and the gold tees, the ratings have not changed. New tee locations = new ratings. Have fun!

Off the Tee continued Calling All Ladies Opening Evening: The Year of the Monarch Wednesday, May 9 We witness the cranes, the turkeys, the deer and next the quest to save the Monarch butterfly! This year s Ladies Organization theme: The Monarch Butterfly. All OGC ladies are invited to the opening event! The nine hole golf event begins at 3:00 in the afternoon- shotgun start. All players tee off. Select the best position. All players then play their own ball out. Count the two best net scores each hole. 8:00am breakfast (optional) followed by a 9:00am shotgun start. A-B-C-D pairings drawn by staff. Golf event fee: $35. Call the golf shop to sign up or email chuckw@ocongolfclub.org. The Albright Cup Monday, May 28 Resurrected in 2011, one the oldest and one of the most coveted trophies at the club, the Albright Cup (winners noted as early as 1922!), is awarded to the low net score shot by a man and the low net score shot by a woman on Memorial Day. Sign up at the first tee. Separate divisions for various tees. This optional competition will not affect the normal flow of holiday play. Fee: $10 per player. This is a Labor Day Shoot Out qualifying event. Reminder: Forward Tee Options As per OGC Tournament Policy, any player who posts 75% or more of their home scores from one of the forward sets of tees (White\Gold, Gold, Red\Gold, Red) will be eligible to play in events from those respective tees. Please note: The USGA does not recognize scores shot by an individual playing alone. Don t shoot the messenger Meet the Staff What! No pictures of the new golf shop staff in the newsletter? Well, on your way to the first tee, please stop in the golf shop and meet the staff in person. They are really an engaging group! While you are in the shop, you can check in and let us know if you are playing nine or eighteen, walking or riding, and we can let you know if there are any issues on the golf course. We will also have an idea of where you are on the golf course in case of an emergency. We thank you for this courtesy!
