Head Coach Rick Heller 9th Season 221-235-1 UNI Record 512-429-4 Career Record Upper Iowa, 1986 Rick Heller is in his ninth season as the head baseball coach at the University of Northern Iowa. During his tenure, he has recorded more than 200 victories, one MVC championship and an NCAA Regional berth. Heller has developed the program into a conference contender while coaching two MVC Most Valuable Players and one MVC Pitcher of the Year. Since Heller s arrival in 2000, the school record books virtually have been rewritten. Fifty team and individual records have been set in the past eight years. The Panthers have accquired a strong tradition as one of the best offensive teams in the conference as well as the country since Heller signed on. In Heller s eight years, UNI has led the league in hitting three times, including being ranked 10th nationally in 2001 with a.333 average. The Panthers were sixth in the nation in stolen bases with 130 in 2003. The team has averaged more than seven runs per game in three of the eight years he has been at the helm. In 2003, Adam Boeve led the league in RBI and home runs and finished second in batting en route to becoming the second MVC Player of the Year during Heller s tenure. Team hitting is not the only thing that has improved since Heller s arrival. UNI s earned run average has lowered in five of Heller s years with the 2006 ERA being the best in school history. The club s strikeout to walk ratio has improved nearly every season since 2000. The 2003 and 2004 Panther squads also put together the top two defensive teams in school history with an overall fielding percentage of.964 both seasons. EIU finally got into the win column as they defeated Vermont, 9-7, making their current record 1-7. As a team the Panthers have a.265 batting average and an ERA of 6.55. The batting attack is led by junior outfielder Brett Nommensen who boasts a.500 on base percentage and is batting.333. The Panthers lone winner on the mound is senior Tyler Brandon (1-1). Brandon also has the lowest ERA (1.23) among Panther pitchers who have thrown over two innings. Jim Schmitz is in his 14th year coaching EIU baseball and is currently the program s winningest coach. SCOUTING HARVARD The Crimson are 0-3 on the season. However, all three losses came to a nationally-ranked Wichita State squad with one of those losses occurring in extra innings. In the season-opening series versus the No. 16 Shockers, Crimson junior Harry Douglas hit both a three-run homer and a grand slam, occurring in the first and second games. They story of the series finale for the Crimson was the eleven walks recorded by the pitching staff. Harvard is coached by Joe Walsh who has led the Crimson to five Ivy League titles in his 14 seasons. SCOUTING MIAMI The RedHawks are 1-8 overall but have played a tough schedule, facing nationally-ranked opponents in their first four games. Nearly defeating third-ranked Vanderbilt (4-3) and upsetting No. 25 Louisiana-Lafayette (3-1), the RedHawks have gained the respect of opponents despite their record. The Miami batting arsenal has not been very powerful thus far, as the Redhawks have a team batting average of.232 and only one HR to their name. Junior outfielder Chris Nadeau has done his best to boost the batting average, leading the team at.323. Matt Erwood has had a notable start from the mound although he has yet to mark a win. The 6 7 senior has notched 15 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.95 in his 18 innings. Head coach Dan Simonds is in his third year. SCOUTING OHIO STATE The Buckeyes enter the week 5-4 on the season after finishing 1-2 in a trio of games in West Palm Beach, Fla. Both losses on that trip were by just one run. OSU is averaging.267 as a team and is scoring just under six runs per game. J.B. Shuck is leading OSU with 14 hits and a.438 average. Justin Miller is hitting.351 with six doubles and 10 RBIs on the year. Shuck also holds a 2-1 record in three starts on the mound for the Buckeyes. He has given up 11 hits in 17.0 innings pitched, and holds a 3.18 ERA. Bob Todd is in his 21st season at Ohio State. 3 UNI Baseball

SCOUTING CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE The Blue Devils began the 2008 season with a five-game losing streak but have picked up their play as of late winning their last two against Iona and Navy, bringing their record to 2-5. The CCSU bats have done a decent job so far this season with the help of sophomore Tommy Meade and senior Jak Kidd, both boasting batting averages of.333. The Blue Devil pitching staff, however, has been a little shaky with a team ERA of 8.24, which is almost doubles that of their opponents (4.71). Senior Matt Gianini provided some promise for CCSU pitching this week as he recorded a shutout versus Iona and was named the Akadema Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week. Head coach Charlie Hickey has led the Blue Devils to three of the last five Northeast Conference Championships in his eight seasons. SCOUTING ILLINOIS Illinois is 2-4 on the season after dropping its last three contests. The Illini fell 20-6 to #22 Baylor, and then dropped close games to Stephen F. Austin and Illinois-Chicago. Kyle Hudson leads the team with a.421 average. Brandon Wikoff is hitting.333 on the year with 5 RBIs and a double. Mike Stankiewicz, the likely starter against the Panthers, has two no-decisions in his starts this season. He has allowed five earned runs in 13.2 innings of work to hold a 3.29 ERA. Dan Hartleb is in his third season as the head coach for the Illinois. SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN Northwestern enters the week with a 3-4 overall record. The Wildcats are coming off two 9-8 losses, the first on March 1 against South Florida, and the last on Thursday at UIC. The Wildcats are hitting.353 as a team and averaging more than eight runs per game. Their opponents, however, are also finding success at the plate, scoring nearly 10 runs per contest. Mike Kalina is leading Northwestern with a.594 average. He is 19-of-32 from the plate with five extra-base hits and a.844 slugging percentage. He also has 12 RBIs on the year. Nate Roberts is hitting.444 on the season with 12 RBIs. Paul Stevens is in his 20th season at the helm for Northwestern. SCOUTING DARTMOUTH Dartmouth is 2-1 on the year, claiming a series win at Navy in their only action so far this season. The Big Green claimed two one-win victories in that series, including a 1-0 win in the opener. Russell Young pitched seven innings in that game, allowing just two hits. PATIENCE PAYING OFF Dane Embury hit.545 against UALR, collecting six hits in 11 at-bats. The senior also drew seven walks in the four-game series, tallying an. 818 on-base percentage for the weekend. Embury has collected a hit in each of the Panthers last seven games, the longest current hit streak on the team. BREAKING OUT Chris Lopez had a break-out weekend at UALR, tallying seven hits, six of them for extra bases. Lopez hit six doubles in the series and two home runs, finishing the weekend with a 1.000 slugging percentage. FAST START Brandon Douglas got his junior season off to a blistering start. The preseason All-Valley shortstop went 11-of-16 in the series against Centenary, including four doubles. Douglas collected three three-hit games in that series. Preseason All-MVC selection Deric Manrique was able to run out an infield single, but he turned his ankle in the process. Manrique sat out the remainder of the Centenary series and will likely be out of action this weekend. FILLING IN After the injury to Manrique, redshirt freshman Levi Ferguson moved into center field and the leadoff spot for UNI. In his first game as the leadoff man, Ferguson went 3-of-4 from the plate and scored three runs. He hit.375 in the opening series for UNI, and he collected a hit in each of the Panthers four games. WHAT A RELIEF Closer Nick Lauver made a good impression in his first series with the Panthers. The senior transfer from Grundy Center, Iowa, pitched 1.2 innings in two appearances without allowing a hit. He picked up a save in the Panthers win on Feb. 23. ROAD WARRIORS Once again, the Panthers early schedule has them traveling. UNI will play its first 20 games away from Riverfront Stadium. UNI will play in four-game series at Centenary and Arkansas-Little Rock, along with a three-game tournament in the Metrodome and the annual nine-game spring trip to Bradenton, Fla. The Panthers will play its first home game on March 26 when they host UW-Platteville. THE GREAT OUTDOORS The Panthers opening series against Centenary was the first time the team had been able to play or practice outside since October 13. The team has been training in its indoor facility, the UNI-Dome. PRESEASON HONORS UNI s Deric Manrique and Brandon Douglas were each tabbed to the preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference team. Manrique and Douglas were each named to the All-MVC first team last season. In 2007, Manrique led the Panthers with a.351 average, and he stole a league-high 30 bases. Douglas is a two-time All-Valley first-team selection. He led the Panthers with 19 doubles a year ago. 5 UNI Baseball
