The Lexington Times May newsletter 2017 Over 100 years of fun from the general manager April showers bring May flowers! Our team is busy preparing the club for a fantastic summer season of fun for your enjoyment. With college and high school graduations, the end of school and the beginning of summer, please call us if we can help you in any way. If you need a place to host a graduation, birthday, sweet sixteen or other celebration, please call us and we ll be happy to work with you to provide a wonderful event. We ve been busy with some improvements to the Tri-Brook outdoor dining area and are completing some finishing touches to the pool area. In the Tri-Brook, we ve repaired the ceiling on the patio, installed some new lighting, and are adding firepit tables so you can enjoy Lexington s most beautiful outdoor dining experience. Be sure to reserve your table and watch the sunset on the mountains, the beautiful view of the pond, and golfers challenging the 18th hole. At the swimming pool, in addition to painting the main pool and repairing/repainting the concrete deck, we re changing the existing covered entrance into a service area to include a grill (graciously donated by Eric Spencer), microwave, and other items in to provide a quicker and more enjoyable food & beverage experience while you work on your tan and enjoy the cool water. We ll fire up the grill on busy days and weekends, and be able to provide fresh salads, frozen child and adult smoothies, and other wonderful treats from our new poolside menu. Also coming to the pool this summer will be a new kids play area. We re fencing in part of the grass area behind the pool, and will be installing a small playground to include a sandbox, swing set and picnic table for your children or grandchildren to enjoy. Join us as we reopen the pool on Saturday, May 27 and welcome our new Pool Manager and Youth Events manager Kelly Bogensberger. Kelly will join us after graduating from the University of Minnesota. She ll bring pool experience and enthusiasm as we upgrade our service at the pool and activities for our kids. As was the case last year, we ll be extending the hours of the pool for your enjoyment. Pool hours are 8am-dusk Monday- Sunday, with no lifeguards on duty in the mornings. Pool rules will be posted, but we remind you that children under the age of 18 must be supervised by an adult when no lifeguards are on duty. One item that we need you to be aware of is the need to follow the rules regarding alcoholic beverages. Virginia ABC law does not allow members to bring alcoholic beverages onto the property. Whether it s on the golf course or at the pool, please refrain from bringing in your own beer or liquor. You may, however, bring your own wine to the Tri-Brook for dinner. We ll be happy to open and serve it to you for a small corkage fee. Thank you in advance for your consideration, as we don t want to put our ABC license at risk. As Ann and I celebrate our one year anniversary at Lexington, we d like to take a moment and thank you all for your support. And as always, please keep in mind that I welcome your comments and criticisms. If there are areas we can improve, please let me know and our team will work diligently to make your experience enjoyable every time you visit. See you at the Club! Golf at Lexington Below you ll find exciting events, important notes and more! Pro Shop Hours Monday: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Tuesday - Sunday: 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Tee Times 540-463-3542 From the superintendent Whew! I think we finally have most of the mowing under control. All but the roughs anyway. Not only is it hard on the golfers but it is tough on the equipment. Spraying the fairways with a growth regulator has helped and we will continue through July, maybe August. May is always a busy month for pesticide applications. We apply the second application of pre emergent weed control to the fairways, and treat the greens with fungicides for disease, growth regulator for poa seedhead control, and an insecticide that protects the greens for the summer. I am still working with the greens committee to get a lake treatment program in place. It appears it may involve use of chemicals as well as some additional aeration programs. We should be fully staffed by early May and get them trained and up to speed by the middle of the month. Jeff Karlstrand, CGCS Director of Agronomy a senior moment by Mike Evans Captain Louis Grandberry conducted his inaugural meeting of the Senior Mens Team on April 13, 2017. He thanked outgoing captain, Lynn McCoy, for his two years of leadership, culminating with last year s winning season. Louis emphasized building on last year s team spirit and camaraderie. He threw out the possibility of establishing a season ending four team playoff beginning in 2018. He will explore interest among the ten teams that we currently play. Team members agreed to continue wearing white shirts for home matches and to purchase green shirts for our away matches. Members should contact the Pro Shop to order the correct size. Kermit Rockett called attention to the opportunities for all club members to improve our course in two ways: First, we can sign up for the Volunteer Cadre, which will serve to augment Superintendent Jeff Karlstrand s team to tackle special progress and ongoing maintenance. Sign-up sheets are available in the Pro Shop. Second, there is an ad hoc committee that is exploring establishing a Golf Fund with the purpose of using voluntarily given contributions exclusively to improve the course. Details will be forthcoming. The meeting was followed by an 18-hole captain s choice competition with teams selected by the Pro Shop. Seven 4-man teams participated. First place was claimed by the team of John South, Bob Hopkins, Charles Fraley, and Lynn Jones; second went to Bruce King, Jay Crawford, Larry Black, and Bob Welch; while third was the team of David Woody, Gordon Calkins, Max Caskie, and John DeVogt. It was a beautiful day and a great warm-up for the 2017 season which officially gets underway with a home match against the team from Lakeview (Harrisonburg) on April 20. Results of that match will be posted in the next newsletter. The team is always looking for new members of any skill level. Please contact Louis Grandberry (revgrandberry@aol.com) or the Pro Shop for more information. 3

Burger night Our traditional hamburger will be offered on Wednesday for $5 Another dairy tip: In order to make cottage cheese or sour cream last longer, place the container upside down in the fridge. Inverting the tub creates a vacuum that inhibits the growth of bacteria that causes food to spoil. Keep Honey Clear Believe it or not, honey is the only nonperishable food substance, so don t get rid of the stuff if it crystallizes or becomes cloudy. Microwave on medium heat, in 30-second increments, to make honey clear again. Book Your Event with Us!
