TUTOR PROFILES: Will Nery I am a local dancer who graduated from Casuarina Senior College studying a range of performing arts but specializing particularly in dance. I have also been a freelance dance teacher for three years whilst training and working with Tracks Dance Company and Express Studios. My passion for hip hop and break dance began at the age of 5 years when I was first involved with my older brother s break dance crew. I later created my own crew and am passionate about sharing and continuing the culture of hip hop and break dance with young Darwin dancers. Erica McCallum My love of Ballet began when I was just 3 years of age and my passion for disciplined, expressive and creative dance has developed significantly throughout the past 30 years. I assumed my Ballet training in Alice Springs with Lynn Hanton before auditioning for the Australian Ballet School and being selected to join their finals week. I then danced full time in Melbourne with Christine Walsh Dance Academy before moving on to attend university and study exercise physiology in Sydney. Upon completion of my studies I travelled the world for 2 years before returning home to teach Ballet in both Hobart and Darwin including, currently, within the Essington After School Club program. To me, teaching Ballet is a means of introducing young children to the magic of dance, teaching them the discipline they require to follow their dreams and admiring each individual for their own merit. My vision for the Ballet students of Essington International Dance Academy is to deliver classes with a significant focus on technique which will provide my dancers with a strong foundation to succeed in all other dance mediums. I wish for my students to prosper a love of dance and will nurture the students of Essington International Dance Academy to be the best they can be. Grace Halliwell I completed Year 12 at The Essington International Senior College, Charles Darwin University in December 2014. I then went on to complete a two year Advanced Diploma of Musical Theatre and Cert IV in Dance Teaching at Jason Coleman s Ministry of Dance in North Melbourne in 2016. Since the age of three I have been involved in Dance and Performance representing the NT both in Teams and as a Soloist at interstate Championships. Some of my highlights as a performer have been as a back-up dancer to Jessica Mauboy at the Opening of the Arafura Games, NFL Dancer in Sydney, many wonderful School Dance Productions. Musical Theatre Productions at Jason Coleman s Ministry of Dance in Melbourne. Most recently I performed in the latest TRACKS Dance Company Performance at the Darwin Festival- In Your Blood. I am proud to be one of our first Essington dance graduates and to have the opportunity to return to Essington to teach and mentor our upcoming young. 3

Lisa Svara My love of ballet and all things dance started as a young girl in Hervey Bay, Queensland. After completing a Bachelor of Exercise Science, I was unexpectantly thrown into my first dance teaching role as part of my employment as an Exercise Physiologist in Brunei, South-East Asia in 1998. Here I established a dance school, teaching a range of dance genres and ages. I commenced employment with The Essington School Darwin in 2007 and am honored to have been part of the development and growth of our amazing Dance Program. From Preschoolers to Senior College students, I relish the opportunity to teach and share my passion for dance. The extension of our program to the wider Darwin community with our Essington International Dance Academy is such an exciting new chapter to be a part of. Gary Lang I am a Larrakia man and trained at the National Aboriginal and Islander Dance School (NAISDA). I have toured nationally & internationally with some of Australia s premier dance companies, the Aboriginal and Islander Dance Theatre, Bangarra, Dance North and Tracks Inc. I am a dynamic dancer, choreographer, teacher and performer and an integral part the NT dance community. I actively strive to maintain a strong cultural identity, acting as an ambassador for my culture through my practice. I am looking forward to being a part of the Essington dance family and sharing my passion with dancers. Sarah Tyrrell I completed my Pilates certificate over 6 years ago through Studio Pilates. My Pilates classes have a strong focus on posture and breathing technique from the outset. Having taught in a variety of studios and gyms in Darwin and with a broad range of client needs, I provide options (progressions and regressions) for each exercise meaning everyone can participate. Over time, you will feel muscles engage and strengthen, improved posture, and a sense of calm. Hemangi Surti I started performing Folk and Bollywood dance as a young child living in India. In 2006 I moved to Darwin and later formed the Abhinaya Dance group. We perform at India @ Mindil and other cultural festivals. I am currently studying Education at Charles Darwin University and am excited to have this opportunity to share my passion for Indian Folk Dance and Bollywood dance with The Essington International Academy dancers. 4

Tahnee Cvirn After graduating from Darwin High School, I completed a Certificate IV in Performing Arts at Brent Street Studios in Sydney. Currently I am studying a Bachelor of Arts (Dance/Drama) Master of Secondary School Teaching at Deakin University in Melbourne. Growing up in Darwin has provided me a variety of dance experiences that has fostered my love for dance. I have worked with Slide Youth Dance and also Tracks Dance Company. I am very excited to be a part of the Essington s International Dance Academy and to share my passion for jazz dance. 5

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS: Ballet: Each Ballet level will be designed to keep dancers engaged whilst focusing on classical technique which is the foundation to every dance medium. The content of Ballet classes will vary from week to week but classwork will be based on the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus. Through various exercises at the Barre and in the Centre, students will learn the fundamentals for technique, develop their strength, increase their flexibility, learn the art of musicality and improve their posture and poise. Attire: Ballerinas require proper ballet shoes, ballet stockings/socks and leotards for every class. Hair should be worn off the face, in a neat hair bun. Hip Hop & Break Dance: Dancers will learn a range of hip hop and break dance skills including popping, locking, freezes, aerial technique and freestyling. The focus will be on developing strength, coordination, conditioning, flexibility and fitness. Advanced students will extend fundamental skills learnt into more complicated tricks and techniques. Attire: Students should wear t-shirts that cover the shoulders and track pants that cover the knees. If they choose to, another option is to wear shorts with SOFT dance knee pads. Contemporary: Being an expressive dance style that incorporates elements of classical ballet, modern jazz, lyrical and break dance, students will learn techniques developed by the original contemporary pioneers. Technical skills incorporating floor work, swings, travel and jumps will by applied to movement phrases where students will develop expression and musicality. Attire: Leotards and leggings that cover knees are recommended. Dance knee pads may also be required. Lilypad Dance: Lisa Svara established the Lilypad Dance program in 2016 to cater for toddlers to preschoolers. The class structure allows Prima Ballerina want-a-bees, Toddler dance divas and Mini B-boys to explore movement and develop basic dance skills. The Lilypad Dance flexible class structure follows themes that incorporate theme related songs, props and costumes for the young dancers to freely express themselves. For example in our In the Sky themed classes, dancers explore being Ballerina Butterflies, B-Boy Helicopters, Superheroes and much more. Attire: Free dress all ballerinas, superheroes and b-boys welcome. Musical Theatre: The Essington International Dance Academy Musical Theatre Program will foster individuality, creativity and love for musical theatre through action, singing and dancing. Students will study a different musical each term to learn the art form, self-expression and creativity of all three genres to enhance their overall musicality and knowledge of this program. Attire: Jazz shoes and/or chorus heels are recommended but not initially essential. AcroDance: The Essington International Dance Academy AcroDance Class will cover the five divisions of AcroDance: Flexibility, Strength, Balancing, Limbering and Tumbling. AcroDance blends classical dance techniques with precision acrobatics moves. It is both athletic and creative, working on students flexibility, strength, acrobatics and techniques. The classes are a lot of fun and perfect for developing acrobats or students who just love to perform tricks for recreation and fun. Attire: Students require leggings and leotards and hair secured back neatly. Jazz: Jazz dance combines a range of dance styles including ballet, street dance, hip hop, funk, cabaret and lyrical. Students will learn a range of technical skills including isolations, turns, leaps, travel 6

combinations, kicks and floor work and apply these in dance phrases that emphasize timing and performance flare. Flexibility, strength and core control are important elements in jazz technique. Attire: Students require jazz shoes, leotards and leggings and hair secured back neatly. Limber and Stretch: This class will assist participants to improve their strength and overall flexibility. It focuses on a series of static and dynamic stretching and strengthening exercises that help to tone and shape the muscles while improving joint range of motion. Participants will achieve a significant improvement in suppleness and posture that will support other dance/sporting pursuits as well as reduce the risk of injury. Attire: Comfortable clothing that allows easy movement and maintains modesty. Adults Classes: Adult classes will be a variety of different dance genres run in 2-4 week blocks with specialist dance instructors of that genre e.g. Ballet with Erica McCallum; Hip Hop with Will Nery; Musical Theatre with Grace Halliwell, Dance Fitness with Lisa Svara. The focus will be for participants to develop fitness, coordination, flexibility, strength and confidence. Ultimately the goal for these classes is to have fun and enjoy grooving. Attire: Comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. Pilates: Pilates focuses on strengthening muscle groups, building flexibility as well as improving posture. Classes will assist in activating, developing and maintaining core strength and other body parts by performing exercises which concentrate on the smaller muscle groups -those responsible for keeping us strong. Pilates can also assist with injury prevention - if the core is weak often other muscles can take over causing an imbalance to the body. Pilates is well recognised as one of the best strengthening training regimes for dancer s bodies. Attire: Comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. Also please bring a yoga mat/towel and a water bottle. Bollywood: In this class, dancers will enjoy Bollywood fusion beats whilst learning the articulate art of Indian Folk dance and Bollywood dance. Specific techniques including intricate hand and foot coordinated movement will be taught. Folk dance skills also incorporate fast movements with specific timing to the beat as well as circling movement patterns and clapping. Attire: Comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. 7
