CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Grand Strand/Myrtle Beach Chapter - American Singles Golf Association November 2008 From The Desk of Your President Ah, the end of the year and new officers will be taking the reins for 09. I wish them luck, they will need it. This is the first year we attempted to put COMMITTEES in place to carry the workload for all the activities we now have going on. I wish to thank my membership chairperson, Mary Connolly, for her great dedication to managing our membership duties. She and her committee members have done a great job following up on visitors, checking on members we have not seen for awhile, and surveying those who have not renewed, which in itself gives us great feedback towards improving our organization as a whole. She also has been responsible for the new member packets of information that each new member receives. Our social committee has seen some changes over the year. First, Mary Ann Neaton took the reins and got her committee together to plan events including the super job in gathering prizes for our Spring Open House. When she decided to move to Mt. Pleasant, a brand new member, Barbara Carr, jumped in and took over planning all our great social events. Even though Barb summers up north, she left us in great hands over the summer when her committee member, Karen Meyer, took over. That is when we started our drop-in s at Anchor Café on the waterway. Many of us really got to know one another during these casual socials, and the views were great too. Many of our other social events were planned during these get-togethers. This is what committees are all about. Sharing the work and the ideas, and getting to know each other better. I encourage new members to join a committee when they join. It is a way to get to know others faster, and see what our group is really all about. The biggest failure of the year, unfortunately, has been our golf committee. It never got off the ground. All the activities that have attracted new members to our group have fallen by the wayside. The clinics, the par 3 s, the nine and dines (however, the weather played a big part here), and our 18 hole events. Our Spring Weekend Get-Away to Oak Island and Bald Head did come off despite some rain, but our Fall Weekend became a victim of Lake Lure and the economy. We did bring home the trophies from both the Beach Battle and the North/ South. The group really needs a strong Golf Committee, made up of members who have a special interest in the various activities. Hopefully, the new officers will find members willing to serve. Also, a thank you goes out to other board members, Ron Socha as our initial secretary, Cynthia Hassell, who stepped in when Ron had to depart, Jane Kukafka, as treasurer, and Sally Butler and Toni Lacroix who have run the newsletter. And one more huge thank-you to Dave Salisch for all your support all year. We ve had our differences in the past but we have learned from them and this year, we came together to keep this organization running thanks again for being my right hand. As this year ends, I am moving on to the position of Chairman of the Board, as is customary within this organization. It will be a time to reflect on the past and watch the future take shape. We have taken this group from 49 members, only 1 golf event per month and a possible alternative event with the social chair merely handling the food afterwards just 3 years ago to 89 NEXT BIG NATIONAL EVENT: New Year s in Orlando **** Stay at 4-Star Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate Info at www.singlesgolf.com/newyears Other Multi-Chapter Events: SinglesGolf.com/events National Website: www.singlesgolf.com E-Mail: ASGANational@aol.com New Office Hours: 8:00am to 4:00pm, M-F (Eastern) National Office: 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE To join ASGA or renew your dues, contact the National Office at above number or go to www.singlesgolf.com/join CHAPTER WEBSITE: www.myrtlebeach.singlesgolf.com Regular Meeting Date: THIRD TUESDAY of each month Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 at 7:00pm Meeting Location: Logan's at Coastal Grand Mall Our Hotline: 843-942-4124 (See next page for list of officers and board members.)

Nine of our chapter members attended: Dave Pelletier, John Webb, Joann Micheli, Barbara Carr, Toni Lacroix, Jane Kukafka, Nancy Feller, Bette Nicol and Lynn Tarquinio. The accommodations, food and, especially, the golf courses were excellent. Even the weather cooperated cold in the early morning but heating to a comfortable level by late morning. Treasurer Jane Kukafka jstagg367@aol.com (843)399-9412 Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? You can now do this yourself. Simply click on the MY ACCOUNT link at the national website (SinglesGolf.com). You can update your address, phone, add your cell phone, change handicap, etc. Doing it yourself takes the burden off of your chapter leaders so they can spend more time on the golf course and less time on the computer!

We had some winners from our chapter: The 1 st day at the Bald Mountain course: Barbara Carr won nearest to the pin on hole #8 and her team placed second. The second day at the Apple Valley course: Nancy Feller s team placed first and Dave Pelletier s team placed second. We all had a wonderful time making new and seeing old friends. ~Lynn Tarquinio ABOUT OUR MEMBERS Happy Birthday to these members: Ed Chase - 11/01 Robert Dicks - 11/16 William Dunbar - 11/01 Joanne Micheli - 11/01 David Pelletier - 11/20 Larry Thompson - 11/30 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) Myrt Dennis - 11/30/2008 William Dunbar - 11/30/2008 Margaret Fitzpatrick - 11/30/2008 Gilbert La Fontaine - 11/30/2008 Curt Miel - 11/30/2008 Betty Street - 11/30/2008 Vickie Underwood - 11/30/2008 Valeta Watkins - 11/30/2008 John Webb - 11/30/2008 Diane Wolfe - 11/30/2008 Welcome newest members: Joan Kalac - Joined 10/10/2008 Patricia Phillips - Joined 09/08/2008 Mary Ann Sanborn - Joined 10/24/2008 These members recently renewed: Eileen Dozier Antoinette Lacroix These members did not renew their dues: (date shown is date membership expired) James Alvey - 10/31/2008 Sally Butler - 10/31/2008 Dolores Dulaski - 09/30/2008 John Foglietta - 09/30/2008 Kent Hammond - 09/30/2008 Jane Hollandsworth - 09/30/2008 Mildred Layne - 10/31/2008 Rose Papaioannou - 10/31/2008 Earl Reitzel - 10/31/2008 David Roth - 10/31/2008 Pat Rust - 09/30/2008 Edward Wydro - 09/30/2008 Our chapter currently has 64 members. The Laws of Golf LAW 1: No matter how bad your last shot was, the worst is yet to come. This law does not expire on the 18th hole, since it has the supernatural tendency to extend over the course of a tournament, a summer and, eventually, a lifetime. LAW 2: Your best round of golf will be followed almost immediately by your worst round ever. The probability of the latter increases with the number of people you tell about the former. LAW 3: Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic. Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water. LAW 4: Golf balls never bounce off of trees back into play. If one does, the tree is breaking a law of the universe and should be cut down. LAW 5: No matter what causes a golfer to muff a shot, all his playing partners must solemnly chant "You looked up," or invoke the wrath of the universe. LAW 6: The higher a golfer's handicap, the more qualified he deems himself as an instructor. LAW 7: Every par-three hole in the world has a secret desire to humiliate golfers. The shorter the hole, the greater its desire. LAW 8: Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture known to man. LAW 9: Palm trees eat golf balls. LAW 10: Sand is alive. If it isn't, how do you explain the way it works against you? LAW 11: Golf carts always run out of juice at the farthest point from the clubhouse. LAW 12: A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group. Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent -- or some similar combination. LAW 13: All 3-woods are demon-possessed. LAW 14: Golf balls from the same "sleeve" tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water (See Law three). LAW 15: A severe slice is a thing of awesome power and beauty. LAW 16: "Nice lag" can usually be translated to "lousy putt." Similarly, "tough break" can usually be translated "way to miss an easy one, sucker." LAW 17: The person you would most hate to lose to will always be the one who beats you. LAW 18: The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be. LAW 19: Golf should be given up at least twice per month. LAW 20: All vows taken on a golf course shall be valid only until the sunset.
