Pigeon Forge, TN, Lunch Ride Wednesday, May 10, 2017 by Dennis Bible We rolled out of the Blairsville, Marathon station at 9 AM with 7 bikes/trikes and 11 riders (9 members & two guests) under clear skies and 65 degrees. We headed North on Hwy 129 with Jill McDaris riding out ahead of the group sweeping for riders that might be joining enroute. There were none. We took our first break at the Ingles store in Robbinsville, then continued North through Deals Gap into Tennessee. Traffic was light and there was utility work being performed in the "Gap" so it was actually a relaxing ride. Bottoming out on the Little Tennessee River, we turned Northeast on the 16 mile Foothills Parkway and then Hwy 321 to our next stop in Townsend, TN, for gas and restrooms (1 outhouse). 3
Continuing on Hwy 321 took us through the beautiful Wears Valley and a spectacular view of the North side of the Great Smoky Mountains. A right turn onto Hwy 441 and 7 miles brought us to our lunch stop in Pigeon Forge, TN., at the Golden Corral Buffet. The staff arraigned a table for 12 and gave us the "Early Bird Discount of about $8.50" which we all qualified for! I think several "weigh loss diets" got fractured there! After lunch we mounted up and continued on Hwy 441 over Newfound Gap and onto our last rest stop at the Park Visitor Center just outside of Cherokee, NC. From there we started home with the "Cleveland Riders" heading home via Hwy 441 and the rest of us turning on Hwy 19, then Hwy 74 to Hwy 129. By then those Goldwings started "smell'n the barn" and you can just give 'em their head, relax and they'll take you home! A fine day for a ride with some very good riders! 11 riders, 7 bikes/trikes, 250 miles in approximately 8 hours! Dennis Bible MYSTERY RIDE May 18, 2017 By Roger LeRoy The weather on Thursday, May 18th was bright and sunny with a warming trend that had some of us taking off a layer of clothing before we left the Marathon Station in Blairsville. There were 3-motorcycles and 1-tryke with a total of eight Blue J's departing with a packed lunch to a destination known only by the leaders. Starting westward on the 4-lane we quickly tuned onto K - Road and took Old Blue Ridge Hwy. to Skeenah Gap Road. With very little traffic and temperatures in the mid 70's, roads such as Skeenah Gap Rd., Dial Rd., Newport Rd., Doublegap Rd. and Roy Rd. remind us that we have some of the world's best riding right here in North Georgia. We stopped at a service station just before turning onto Hwy. 52 for a short break. Following the break we turned left onto Hwy. 52 and headed for a short-cut called Faucetts Lake Rd. intending to take us to Hwy. 136 west. Looking good on the GPS, this short-cut turned out to be a gravel road. First few yards looked smooth and hard-packed so we kept going until we came to some sizable ruts and washouts. This encouraged us to do a U-turn and get back on the paved roads. Another 5 miles on Hwy. 52 brought us to Hwy. 136 west and our lunch destination at a public pavilion in the village of Talking Rock. This pavilion is normally available with a reservation. If not occupied, it is available 4
without a reservation and we were lucky. Restrooms are included within the covered pavilion. After a lengthy and amiable lunch we mounted up and continued west on Hwy. 136 around Carters Lake to Old Hwy. 411. From there we took Hwy. 76 east into Ellijay where we had our dessert stop at the local DQ. Some folks may think it is wasting good 'highway time' or 'burning daylight' but this congenial group discussed many different topics of the day and had solutions to all of the world's problems. While none of the riders seemed anxious to get back on the road, we finally mounted up and took back roads into Blue Ridge. Here Wayne & Pam left us to head for their home in McCaysville. Temperature was now at its highest for the day at 82 degrees. Old Hwy. 76 was closed north of Blue Ridge so we turned onto Aska Rd. which took us to Skeenah Gap Rd. where Gordon & Sandy continued on Hwy. 60 and back to Gainesville. The rest of us proceeded into Blairsville where we parted from Dutch and Kathy. Fine ride, great weather, fun with friends. Hello Riders! Ride cancelled due to RAIN We will host about a dozen Chapter B-2 Douglasville members on a ride through our beautiful S. Carolina, N. Carolina and Georgia mountain roads this Sunday, 5/28/17. We'll leave from the Young Harris Citgo Station about 9 AM and meet the B-2 riders at the Unicoi State Park Headquarters just outside of Helen, GA., at about 10 AM. This will be a Deli Lunch ride. The weather is predicted to be "partly cloudy, mid 60's to low 80's". Come out and help us show these folks a good ride! Any questions, please contact me. RUN FOR THE WALL; As discussed at our May meeting on Saturday, 5/20/17, the southern route for the RUN FOR THE WALL will be going through Chattanooga this week on their way to Washington, D.C. They will be riding from Chattanooga to Knoxville via route I-75 on Wednesday morning. Anyone wanting to ride to I-75 and honor the thousands of riders participating in this annual event is encouraged to join us as we show our appreciation for their endeavor from the overpass at I-75 and Hwy. 74 (Cleveland, TN bypass). For more information go to rftw.us and you will see that they will be in their eight day on Wednesday the 24th. We will go to lunch after the ride proceeds past our vantage point. 5
