You are bidding on what could be a very unique and exciting day on the hard water of Presque Isle Bay cruising along on a Sweet Sixteen ice boat. An S-16 is a comfortable (as much as ice boats are) 16 long craft seating two persons. If you didn t know, an ice boat is powered only by the wind against the sail just as any soft water sailboat. The boat rests on three steel runners which unlike an ice skate are ground to a sharp point where the runner meets the ice. Once the boat starts moving the apparent wind moves forward and remains there even when the boat is traveling down wind. An ice boat is capable of accelerating very quickly and when combined with the fact that the craft sits just inches above the ice can make an exhilarating ride experience. Bring your skiing duds, warm boots and gloves. We will supply the excitement. The day on the ice will be during our ensuing winter on a date agreeable to the bidder however we are obviously subject to local wind and ice conditions. The date may be postponed as required until conditions are acceptable. Is an authentic Friendship sloop built by Lash Bros. in Friendship, Maine as the State of Maine s exhibit at the 1964 World s Fair. She has served as a floating Classroom at the Bayfront Center since 2000 and has been partly rebuilt by BMC using local talent. She is based on Historian Howard Chapelle s drawing of a local type fishing boat found in Erie during the period from 1880 through 1910. Frances Herreshoff s design #96 and is unique in that she is the only boat ever built to that design. Her slightly smaller Sister design #98 called Rozinante has been very popular with scores of boats built. Gora was built in 1971 by Ted Paasch and has always been owned by an EYC member. Frances Herreshoff s design #89 and the name boat of the class was Araminta which was built for day sailing in Maine. Many boats have been built to this design. Ponemah was built in Erie, PA in 1979 by Ted Paasch and has sailed out of EYC ever since. She sailed out of EYC for many years and then spent a number of years in NY state. When the building she was winter stored in collapsed on her, Bob Arlet purchased her and brought her home and restored her. She was the prototype of a class of 29 ft waterline sloops and yawls and also the prototype design for the first large production fiberglass Boat, the Bounty II. She has sailed out of EYC for three seasons and has been extensively rebuilt during this period. She is the third of eight ketches built to design #367 based on the Schooner Malibar VII which had won the 1926 Bermuda Race. Dreamer was purchased by a group of EYC members and rebuilt on the EYC grounds during the summer of 2006. She has been sailing here since the 2007 season.
