Target Squad The Target Squad is the high-performance training squad of the Western Aquatic Academy Swimming Team. Attendance is required at a minimum of six training sessions per week, as well as at all targeted camps and competitions. Exceptions in terms of regular attendance in this squad will only be made due to Year 12 studies and university commitments. Education is just as important as swimming training, and you will be expected to maintain a high level of dedication in both areas. Coaches: John Bellew and Paul Taylor Aim: To further develop and prepare swimmers to compete successfully at the Victorian Age Championships and to qualify for the Australian Age Championships The swimmer is committed to producing the training necessary to achieve personal best results The swimmer has achieved one or more Victorian Age Championships qualifying times To compete successfully at all targeted competitions (including Club events) Regular attendance at a minimum of six training sessions per week as well as targeted camps and competitions To have successfully completed all training requirements of the Fitness/Triathlon Gold or State Youth Squad Be focused and committed to achieving individual/team goals Attend meetings with coaches as required Age/s: Preferred (but not exclusive to) 13 years and over Personal Equipment Required: Fins, snorkel, kick board, pull buoy, paddles, water bottle Training Cycles: The season will be divided into three cycles. State Youth Squad The State Youth Squad is the elite junior training squad of the Western Aquatic Academy Swimming Team. Attendance is required at a minimum of two training sessions per week, as well as at all targeted camps and competitions. Education is just as important as swimming training, and you will be expected to maintain a high level of dedication in both areas. Coaches: John Bellew and Paul Taylor Aim: To develop technique, skill and race proficiency in all four competitive strokes and Individual Medley with a major focus on preparing swimmers for District and State Level competitions The swimmer is committed to producing the training necessary to achieve personal best results To compete successfully at all targeted competitions (including Club events) Regular attendance at between two to six training sessions per week as well as targeted camps and competitions To have successfully completed all training requirements of the Junior Talent Squad and/or has demonstrated the ability to compete successfully in all four strokes and IM Be focused and committed to achieving individual/team goals, group aims and promotion to the Target Squad Attend meetings with the coaches as required Age/s: Preferred (but not exclusive to) 8 12 years Personal Equipment Required: Fins, snorkel, kick board, water bottle Training Cycles: The season will be divided into three cycles. Fitness/Triathlon Gold Squad The Fitness/Triathlon Gold Squad is a high-level training squad that is flexible to each athlete s goals/needs. This includes swimmers targeting: age/masters pool competitions, surf/open water/triathlon events, water polo and swimmers training solely to improve fitness and/or technique. This squad caters for both competitive and non-competitive swimmers. Attendance is required at a minimum of two training sessions per week. Coaches: John Bellew and Paul Taylor Aim: To provide a training regime that caters for the needs of a range of swimmers whilst developing technique, skill and race proficiency in all four competitive strokes Flexible session requirements regular attendance at between two to five sessions per week To have successfully completed all the training requirements of the Fitness/Triathlon Silver Fitness Squad or the State Youth Squad Be focused and committed to achieving individual/team goals Age/s: Preferred (but not exclusive to) 13 years and over Personal Equipment Required: Fins, snorkel, kick board, pull buoy, paddles, water bottle Training Cycles: This squad s training regime will revolve around individual athlete s requirements/goals The season will be divided into three cycles. Fitness/Triathlon Silver Squad The Fitness/Triathlon Silver Squad is a training squad that is flexible to each athlete s goals/needs, including swimmers targeting: age/masters pool competitions, surf/open water/triathlon events, water polo and swimmers training solely to improve fitness and/or technique. Emphasis will be centered upon mastering specific drills/skills and techniques rather than skimming over a broad range of content. Junior Talent Squad The Junior Talent Squad is focused on developing effective swimming technique and skills across the four competitive strokes both at training and in competition. WAA Targeted Swimming Meets are highly recommended for faster growth in the sport of swimming. Coaches: John Bellew and Khoa Le Aim: To develop skills and technique in all four competitive strokes and to participate regularly in competition Regular attendance at between one to five sessions per week To have successfully completed all the training requirements of the Competition Development Squad and/or can demonstrate proficiency in the technique and associated skills of Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke for a minimum distance of 100m and Butterfly for a minimum distance of 50m To compete at targeted competitions (including Club events) Be focused and committed to achieving individual/team goals, understanding successful training practices and promotion to the State Youth Squad Age/s: Preferred (but not exclusive to) 7 12 years of age Personal Equipment Required: Fins, water bottle Training Cycles: The season is divided into rotating cycles that include specific stroke and skill focuses each session. Emphasis will be centered upon mastering specific drills/skills and techniques rather than skimming over a broad range of content. Competition Development Squad The Competition Development Squad is the progression from swimming lessons to squad/club swimming. The major focus is to develop effective swimming technique and skills across the four competitive strokes and to prepare swimmers for competition. Coaches: John Bellew and Khoa Le Aim: To develop skills and technique in all four competitive strokes whilst encouraging participation in competitive swimming Regular attendance at between one to four sessions per week To have successfully completed Level 6 or 7 of the MAC Learn to Swim Program and/or can demonstrate proficiency in Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke for a minimum distance of 50m and Butterfly for a minimum distance of 25m Begin to compete in targeted competitions (with a major focus on encouragement meets and Club events). Be focused and committed to achieving individual/team goals, understanding successful training practices and promotion to the Junior Talent Squad Age/s: Preferred (but not exclusive to) 5 12 years of age Personal Equipment Required: Fins, water bottle Training Cycles: The season is divided into rotating cycles that include specific stroke and skill focuses each session. Emphasis will be centered upon mastering specific drills/skills and techniques rather than skimming over a broad range of content.
