The Devils put togehter one of their better performances of the season on Saturday, Nov. 12, rallying from a two-goal deficit in the third period to win 5-4 in overtime. It was a pair of freshmen defensemen tallying the game-tying and game-winning goals, as JAKOB STRIDSBERG fired a blast to tie the game with 1:30 left in the 3rd period. Rookie BRINSON PASICHNUK made a highlight-reel play to swat in the puck off a rebound out of the air less than a minute into overtime. Sophomore JORDAN MASTERS, who played in his first game of the season after leading the Devils in scoring in 2015-16, tallied his first goal of the season to cut the Wildcats lead to one in the third. On Sunday, ASU went the distance with No. 3 Boston College, entering the first intermission in a 1-1 tie. Early in the second, the Eagles capitalized on a lucky bounce, as a dump into the corner bounced back in front for an easy tap in for BC. While the Devils had several scoring chances down the stretch to tie it up, a late goal in the third period made for a 3-1 loss. TODAY S MATCH-UP For the first time since 2012, Arizona State and Penn State -- both former ACHA National Champions -- will meet again on the ice in State College. The last time the two met, the Nittany Lions were in the midst of their NCAA hybrid season while the Devils were still in the hunt for their first ACHA Championship. Game one that year went to Penn State, while the next night belonged to the Sun Devils as they earned their first-ever win over an NCAA opponent, 3-1. Since moving to Division I, Penn State as a program has changed in many aspects -- from a new head coach, to a new state-of-the-art arena, to already contending for a Big Ten Title as one of the top-ranked teams in the country. This season they re led by freshman Denis Smirnov from Moscow, Russia. The rookie forward five multi-point games for a total of five goals and 12 assists this season. The Nittany Lions leading goal scorer Andrew Sturtz paces the team with eight goals on the season. Between the pipes, freshman Peyton Jones leads the team with an 8-0-1 record, along with an 1.96 goals against average and.919 save percentage. CLASS, CLASS, CLASS! The Sun Devils 2017-18 signing class is currently ranked 12th in the country by NeutralZone.net, a hockey scouting and news site. The fall signing day revealed five new Devils for next season, including the 2nd-ranked player from the 1996 class in defenseman PATRICK KUDLA -- who was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the 6th round in 2016. The Devils also picked up two other top-50 prospects according to NeutralZone in forward TYLER MALTBY (41) and JOHNNY WALKER (45). Defensemen GVIDO JANSONS from Latvia and JACOB WILSON will also join the Devils in 2017-18. THE YOUNG WILL PROSPER So far this season, five of the seven freshman skaters have played in all nine games so far this season. Freshmen GEORGY GORODETSKY and RILEY SIMPSON are the only two to have played in less, as they ve skated in five games each. However, they have both seen ice time in the two of the last three games. MASTER OF HIS CRAFT Sophomore JORDAN MASTERS returned to the fold on Saturday, Nov. 12 against New Hampshire, tallying a goal and an assist in his season opener. One night later against No. 3 Boston College, he scored his second to tie the game before the first intermission. MASTERS is the Sun Devils returning leading scorer from 2015-16, as he totaled eight goals and 14 assists against NCAA opponents. NEW FACES Eighteen of the 24 goals scored by the Sun Devils so far this season have come off the sticks of players who did not wear the maroon & gold in 2015-16. Sophomore defenseman NICHOLAS GUSHUE, and forwards JOE LAPPIN, DAVID NORRIS and JORDAN MASTERS have accounted for the other six goals. WADE MURPHY and DYLAN HOLLMAN were a part of the team, but redshirted the 2015-16 season due to NCAA transfer rules. DRAFTED DEVILS Three of the new Sun Devils were NHL draft picks within the past four years. While freshman JOEY DACCORD was drafted prior to wearing the Maroon & Gold, he is officially the first drafted player in Sun Devil Division I history as he was commited to ASU. DACCORD went 199th overall in the 7th round of the 2015 NHL Draft to the Ottawa Senators. Graduate transfer ROBBIE BAILLARGEON was also drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the 2012 NHL Draft in the 5th round and 136th overall. Redshirt junior WADE MURPHY was selected 185th overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2013 NHL Draft. 2017-18 signee PATRICK KUDLA was the most recent Sun Devil to be drafted, as he was selected 158th overall in the 6th round by the hometown Arizona Coyotes. Redshirt sophomore LOUIE ROWE and freshman BRINSON PASICHNUK were invited to NHL Development Camps, including the Winnipeg Jets and Minnesota Wild, respectively. ROWE tallied two goals and one assist in two games played. TO BE THE BEST, HAVE TO BEAT THE BEST As of today, the Sun Devils are scheduled to play 11 ranked teams in their first full NCAA Division I season. So far, the Devils have played 10 of their first 11 games against ranked opponents. After the two-game series against No. 10 Penn State, ASU will enter a seven-game stretch against unranked teams. VÄLKOMMEN Sun Devil Hockey welcomes their first student-athletes from across the pond, as defenseman JAKOB STRIDSBERG from Sweden and forward GEORGY GORODETSKY from Russia join the roster. Through nine games, STRIDSBERG has tallied two goals and an assist from the blue line, while GORODETSKY earned his first collegiate assist against Michigan. 2016-2017 SCHEDULE Date Opponent Time Oct.1 Maroon vs Gold 7:05 PM Oct. 7 at Notre Dame L, 9-2 Oct. 8 at Notre Dame L, 4-2 (EN) Oct. 14 vs. Air Force* L, 4-3 Oct.16 vs. Air Force* W, 5-2 Oct. 21 at Northeastern L, 5-2 Oct. 22 at Northeastern L, 6-1 Oct. 28 vs. Harvard* L, 7-0 Oct. 29 vs. Harvard L, 6-2 Nov. 4 vs. Michigan* L, 4-1 Nov. 12 at New Hampshire W, 5-4 (OT) Nov. 13 at Boston College L, 3-1 Nov. 18 at Penn State 7:00 PM Nov. 19 at Penn State 3:00 PM Nov. 25 vs. RPI 7:05 PM Nov. 26 vs. RPI 7:05 PM Dec. 2 vs. Colgate 7:05 PM Dec. 3 vs. Colgate 7:05 PM Dec. 13 at American International TBD Dec. 16 at Massachusetts 7:00 PM Dec. 17 at Massachusetts 7:00 PM Desert Hockey Classic Dec. 30 St. Cloud State vs. UCONN ^ 4:00 PM Dec. 30 ASU vs. Brown ^ 7:00 PM Dec. 31 TBD vs. TBD ^ 4:00 PM Dec. 31 ASU vs. TBD ^ 7:00 PM Jan. 6 at Denver 7:30 PM Jan. 7 at Denver 7:00 PM Jan. 13 at Ohio State TBD Jan. 14 at Ohio State TBD Jan. 20 vs. Southern New Hampshire 7:05 PM Jan. 21 vs. Southern New Hampshire 7:05 PM Jan. 27 at Quinnipiac 7:00 PM Jan. 28 at Quinnipiac 7:00 PM Feb. 3 at Western Michigan 5:00 PM Feb. 4 at Western Michigan 5:00 PM Feb. 10 vs. Simon Fraser 7:05 PM Feb. 11 vs. Simon Fraser 7:05 PM Feb. 24 at USA U18 7:00 PM Feb. 25 at USA U18 7:00 PM Mar. 24-26 NCAA Regionals Apr. 6 & 8 NCAA Frozen Four *Game played at Gila RiverArena ^Played at Prescott Valley Events Center in Prescott Valley, AZ
REUNITED & IT FEELS SO GOOD Thirteen Sun Devils have played with at least one teammate prior to reuniting in Tempe. Freshmen TYLER BUSCH and RILEY SIMPSON, who came to ASU from Spruce Grove (AJHL), also played with redshirt sophomore DYLAN HOLLMAN in 2013-14. Sophomores JACK ROWE and LIAM MCGING shared ice time together with the Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL) in 2014-15. The two also were paired up on another USHL squad... The biggest group of them all featured freshman GEORGY GORODETSKY and sophomores RYLAND PASHOVITZ, JACK ROWE, JOE LAPPIN and LIAM MCGING with the Des Moines Buccaneers (USHL) in 2014-15 as well. The longest tenured pair became teammates again years later, as senior DREW NEWMEYER and graduate senior ROBBIE BAILLARGEON played together from 2011-13 with the Indiana Ice (USHL). The obvious duo on the roster is brothers BRINSON and STEENN PASICHNUK, who played with the Bonnnyville Pontiacs (AJHL) from 2013-16. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION The Sun Devils will have five games televised nationally this season, with three of them already occurring on the Pac-12 Network (vs. Air Force, vs. Harvard and vs. Michigan). ASU will also be featured on ESPNU and the WatchESPN app against Ohio State on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 12 p.m. (AZT). For all Sun Devil fans in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, South Dakota, Wyoming and Utah, they ll have the chance to watch our match-up with #3 Denver on Jan. 6 on Altitude Sports 2. During the 2013-2014 season, ASU Hockey won the ACHA DI National Championship, with Powers named ACHA DI National Coach of the Year. The Sun Devils were also named WCHL Conference Champions both for 2013-2014 and 2014-2015, and Powers was named WCHL Coach of the Year for 2013-2014.
