COACH CRAIGHEAD AND PLAYER INTERVIEWS All interview requests for Head Coach Jamie Craighead or any players should be made through the SJSU Athletics Media Relations Office, 408-924-1208, at least 24 hours in advance. Players are available as their class schedules, practices and meetings permit. Players will not be available until post-game on game days. Media members are also required to make arrangements with the San José State s Athletics Media Relations Office to attend any practice session. QUICK LOOK AT THE BRUINS This will be the season opener for both teams. UCLA posted a 25-9 record last year and reached the Sweet 16 in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. They averaged 74.1 points a game in 2016-17 and outscored opponents by more than 10 points per game. Jordin Canada led the Bruins offense last year with a 17.8 ppg average and is back for her senior season. She also led her team in assists (7.1/g) and steals (2.5/g). Monique Billings, the team s leading rebounder (10.5/g), is also back and scored 16.7 ppg in 2016-17. Cori Close is in her seventh season leading the Bruins program. She brings a 123-78 record at UCLA into this season. SEASON OPENERS ARE A COIN FLIP San José State has played 42 season openers and are at exactly.500 with 21 wins and 21 losses. Only three of seven head coaches, Sharon Chatman (in 1976-77), Tina Krah (in 1986-87), and Jamie Craighead (in 2013-14) have begun their Spartans career with a win in their first game. Chatman had seven season-opening victories in her 10 years at the helm of the San José State program (1977-86), the most in Spartans history. The late Janice Richard won six of her seven season openers as the Spartans head coach (1999-2006). Craighead has won two-of-four season openers leading the Spartans. In available records, SJSU is 11-29 when it plays its first game on its opponent home floor and when opening the season on the road is 8-8. SPARTANS ROSTER SECOND YOUNGEST IN DIVISION I In a preseason poll of Media Relations Directors, the Spartans are the second youngest team in Division I women s basketball, based on percentage of freshman and sophomores on the roster. Twelve of SJSU s 15 players are underclassmen, which ties them for second place with Florida International. UNC Greenville has the youngest team in the nation at 87.7 percent underclassmen. SJSU s freshman class, as a percentage of the total team, ranks fourth youngest in the nation. Eight of the 2017-18 15 players (53 percent) are freshmen. WHERE ARE THE POINTS GOING TO COME FROM? In 2016-17 the Spartans scored 71.4 points per game, tops in the Mountain West and a respectable 58th in the nation. But heading into 2017-18 it s anyones guess as to where the scoring is going to come from. The Spartans lost Dezz Ramos, the nation s fourth-leading scorer (23.5 points per game), and overall have to replace 42 points per game due to graduation. Ramos is now playing professionally in Iceland and Jasmine Smith, the team s second-leading scorer (12.1 ppg) and leading rebounder (8.2 rpg) from last season is playing in Germany. SJSU returns just one starter from last year s team, Myzhanique Ladd (Sr., G, Seattle, Wash.), and she is just one of three returners who are upperclassmen. Hallie Gennett (Sr., F, Post Falls, Idaho) and Andrea Kohlhaas (Jr. F, Besigheim, Germany) are the other two. 2017-18 Preseason MW Predictions Team (1st-place votes) Points 1. In four seniors who graduated after last year, SJSU has lost 70 percent of its scoring. Last Meeting SJSU Bows To UCLA In Final Of Inaugural Anheuser Busch Classic San Jose, Calif. (11/22/1980) - San Jose State s women s basketball team evened its record at 1-1 with a loss to No. 12 ranked UCLA in the inaugural Anheuser Busch Classic in Spartan Gym. The Bruins handed the Spartans a 78-63 defeat, reminiscent of last years 81-66 loss in the first round of the Region VIII Championships. The story was all Denise Curry for UCLA as she tallied 27 points to go along with her 35 from last night against California in the opener. Curry received MVP honors going away. In the first half SJSU managed to stay with the taller and more talented Bruins and trailed just 37-31 at the intermission. But in the second half the deeper strength at the UCLA bench told the story as the two 6-3 front liners for SJSU Elinor Banks and Cyd Crampton had to sit down with four fouls apiece. Curry took over, assisted by 6-0 forward Necie Thompson who added 15 points. Point guard Mary Hegarty, a freshman like Thompson, added seven assists, earning her all-tourney with Curry. Karen Mason led Spartan scorers with 13 points to go with her 23 from the night before when SJSU beat Utah State 88-66. Close behind was Crampton with 13 points and seven rebounds. UCLA is now 3-0 on the season with the two tourney wins here and a season-opening 97-39 win over UC Irvine. Curry no has a career point total of 2,356, topping Kareem Abdul-Jabbar s school record by 31 points. San Jose State travels to Austin, Texas for a game against nationally ranked Texas on Nov. 25, and then a game at Texas Tech for the following night in Lubbock. In the consolation game, California beat Utah State 93-82 in a see-saw battle. Colleen Galloway tallied 25 for Cal and earned all-tourney honors. Others on the all -tourney squad were Banks (SJSU), Mason (SJSU) and Margaret Johns (USU). MEDIA INFORMATION Welcome to San José State and Spartans Basketball. Head Coach Jamie Craighead Oregon (2002) Fifth Year Craighead s Year-by-Year Coaching Record Total 101-146 61-79 Entering her fourth season leading the Spartans, Jamie Craighead s teams have set and then broken the program s record for points scored in a season, which currently stands at 2,511, and in 2014-15 set a San José State and Mountain West Conference single-game record when the Spartans scored 119 points in a win over Columbia. Under Craighead s guidance the Spartans reached the semifinals of the 2015 Mountain West Championship Tournament. It marked just the second time in the 41-year history of the program that the team advanced that far in its conference championship tournament. In addition, the team s 15 wins were the most since the 2004-05 team won 18 games. The 2013-14 squad established single-season marks for free throws attempted (726) and made (493) as well as three-pointers attempted (793) and made (245). In 2014-15, the Spartans set new marks for three-pointers attempted (872) and made (271), assists (501) and total field goal attempts (2,262). In her two seasons, Craighead s players have earned four conference post-season awards for their play on the court. In addition, they have earned 13 Academic All-Mountain West (3.0+ GPA) and four Mountain West Scholar-Athlete honors (3.5+ GPA), two Dean s Scholar (3.65+ GPA) and one President s Scholar designation (4.0 GPA+) as well as an Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sport-Scholar Award and a first-team Capital One Academic All-District VIII honor. Finally, Ta Rea Cunnigan, the school s all-time leader in scoring, graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2015. Craighead came to San José State after four seasons at Sacramento State (2010-to-2013), where she was the winningest women s head basketball coach in 20 years and the only coach to post a winning conference record at Sacramento State since entering the Big Sky Conference in the 1996-97 season. Under her guidance, the Hornets reached the conference tournament for just the fifth (2012) and sixth (2013) times in program history. The youngest head coach in Division I when she took over the Hornets, Craighead s teams led the Big Sky Conference in scoring in each of her four seasons. Sacramento State set several program records in 2012-13 and the team s 19 wins equaled the program s single-season record. The Hornets led the Big Sky in points, three-pointers, and assists and on the defensive end, topped the league in steals and blocks. Also in 2012-13, Craighead coached Kylie Kuhns and Megan Kritscher, two of the top post players in the Big Sky Conference. Kuhns, at only six feet tall, broke the school and Big Sky career rebounding records during the year, while also leading the team in scoring. For her efforts, Kuhns earned All-Big Sky first-team honors. Kritscher shattered the Big Sky single-season blocks record and ranked fourth in the NCAA in blocks per game for the season. In four seasons, nine of her players garnered All-Big Sky honors. She coached 2011-12 Big Sky Freshman of the Year Fantasia Hilliard, and 23 of her athletes received Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors for their work in the classroom. Prior to accepting the top job at Sacramento State, Craighead spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant for the Hornets before being promoted to Associate Head Coach the following year. Craighead started her coaching career in 2002 under two-time NCAA Division II Coach of the Year Gordy Presnell at Seattle Pacific University. In her three years at SPU, the team posted an 89-5 record, won three PacWest Conference titles, qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament each year and reached the championship game in 2005. After her success in Seattle, she spent two seasons as an assistant at Portland State University before taking a position at Sacramento State. As a collegiate player at the University of Oregon, Craighead led the Ducks to the 2002 WNIT championship after three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. When she finished her career, her 182 3-point field goals made ranked second all-time in Ducks history. Craighead earned honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10 honors as a senior and graduated from Oregon with a bachelor s degree in educational studies in 2002.
